He waved a fat hand dismissively. “That is easy Governor. I will do what I have always done in these matters when I was second in charge of The Alliance. But with some adjustments. First after going through and finding a problem, I and my team will do a very thorough investigation then pass the findings to your office. If it warrants another opinion, the investigation will be passed to your office for another review. Then you will make the decision as to their punishment if any. If it is just a matter of not really understanding tax law or the process of recording and keeping, then I and my office will help them and train them to get on the right track.....” He paused because he got an idea. “That reminds me. We can hold classes every month on how to run a business and file properly. We can do it in Hoka’s University. Anyway. Does my approach make sense, and does it fit in with your protocols?” He took another sip of his drink while he waited for the response.

“I have no protocols,” Dasca said simply. “This is the first time I’ve had to deal with the financial side of administration, though I’m a quick study.” She didn’t want him to get the idea that she was going to run blindly through this. “But I will ask questions and you’ll have to bear with me as we work together if they are seemingly obvious.”

Zerbo nodded. “That is fine madam. We all have to learn sometime. We all have our own areas of expertise, this just happens to be my only one. So you are lucky!” He chuckled at that. It was good to laugh he thought. It has been awhile.

Zerbo

She grinned and leaned back in her chair. “When I get reports, what are the most important things I should be looking for?” It was a pretty simple question, but the financial reports on the colony could get complicated, as she already knew having perused the last few to get an idea at where things stood. A lot of it appeared nonsensical to her, as it just wasn’t something she had had to deal with as a starship captain. Her and Cory had had some complicated finances between them that had to be sorted out during the divorce settlement, but that was nothing compared to running and entire colony.

“A very good question madam. You will need to look at the spendings of each department and to compare it to the last three reports to make sure that it is staying in the same ballpark. Each of my reports will have each of their expenses listed and itemized as well as all of their income and are color coded. I will put an star next to questionable items so that they can be researched. But I guess just look to make sure everything is in the black and I will take care of the rest. But please have a system installed that checks the checker. I am not fallible and I make mistakes.....plus I am a Ferengi.”

Dasca studied him intently for a moment. “Over the many years I’ve travelled the galaxy I’ve learned never to presume anything about anyone based on their species of origin. In fact I’ve already had that bite me in the ass once here already. So I might need you to explain how being Ferengi is going to matter when it comes to the reports you send me.”

“A wise statement built on experience. I mean being a Ferengi is exactly how you just put it. I thank you for not stereotyping myself. But that is the problem. Almost everyone else does do that and no matter how much they trust me or lack of it, I will always be double checked. Now in this instance being the Finance Director, I do welcome the double checking because I do make mistakes, but very rarely. The other thing about being a Ferengi is that we have an inherent, almost brainwashing, from childhood to be..crooks, swindlers, honest merchants, and the like. I have been doing it that way for 80 years and have for the last 4 months now trying to go straight as they say. So old habits die hard but I will be doing my best to make sure that they do die. I just need a chance. I have changed. Does that answer your question?”

Dasca studied him intently for a moment, her hazel eyes lighting up a moment before she smiled. “Yes and no, but where it doesn’t I suspect I will be best to just learn as I go and adapt as we get to know one another. What you should know about me, Minister, is that I suffer no fools. I have little time and energy for games and engage in them only if there is no other way. Your best bet is to be direct with me. Besides, even if I can’t read you emathically, I am a trained psychologist and I’m pretty good at reading people anywhere. But I am not infallible either. I can make mistakes. And if I make one with you, let me know and we can make things right. I can’t fix what I don’t know about.”
