Ten minutes later, the two women stepped with relaxed smiles. Dash, Cort and Elema had been having a nice chat themselves and all three assistants could tell that whatever the two had discussed had left both in an agreeable mood.

“You ready to go?” Jeanette said to Dash. “Don’t want you getting lost to your new place.”

Jones snorted. “I’m sure I’d be okay, but yes, I’ll get a ride with you.” He turned to Elema and Cort and gave them a warm smile. “I look forward to talking more.”

“Same,” Cort replied and Elema gave him a smile and nod of her head.

Dash reached out and offered his hand to Dasca. “Ma’am, It was love to meet you. Hopefully at some point you’ll allow me to ask a few questions about your time in the Corps. There are a couple things in particular I’m intrigued about.”

She took his hand and gave him an amused smile. “Oh? Like?”

“Ruka Three. I have to know how you managed it. The report was… lacking,” he said, his intense blue eyes lighting up as he grinned at her.

Eela barked a laugh, throwing her head back slightly. “Oh… I don’t know. That’s a secret.”

“Shame. I feel like it would be good research for future diplomatic endeavours,” he said.

She just grinned back. “At least for the moment, all I can say is… if you know, you know.” Eela just gazed at him intently for a moment and she could tell through his eyes he was trying to piece together her cryptic response.

“Fair enough,” Dash said with a slight shake of his head.

Eela gave him a wink and turned to Mathis. “Jeannette,” she said with a bow of her head. “I hope you and your family settle in alright. We’ll meet in the morning?”

“Eela,” Mathis said with a warm smile. “We’ll be by at oh nine hundred,” she added tossing a glance to Jones so he would know he was a part of that plan.

“Alright then.”

The group broke up and Mathis and Jones headed back downstairs. Tomorrow, Dasca would show them the floor where their temporary offices were, but right now she acknowledged her assistants and slipped back into her office. Unbeknownst to all but one person in the entire building her security clearance also allowed her to open a very special door. She slipped through it and a minute later gave a knock on the other door, more as a warning than anything. He’d told her to come, after all. Ten seconds passed and then she stepped into Kenzo’s office seeming in a much lighter mood.

The door slid open from a spot near the fireplace in Hyrushi’s office. The Governor was walking from his desk towards the seating area and inclined his head to Eela and gestured to a seat. “I see your meeting went well. I am glad for that.” He waited for her to be seated before sitting himself.

Eela sat so she was turned to face him. “We… sorted that one sticking point out. Mathis dug deeper and found out more about what went down on Khar and apologized for even using it as an example. As a fellow diplomat, she… understood my reaction.”

“How do you feel our last interaction went? Better or worse than the first one?”

Hyrushi, Gov.

She inhaled and considered how she felt about the conversation. “Better, despite how it might have seemed on the surface.” Eela gave a soft smile. “I feel for her, Kenzo. I can understand the very difficult position she’s been put in, and at least from my perspective I see no benefit from going out of our way to make her job harder. We’re in this together now, and I believe she’s here with the best intentions. I know we don’t have a lot of time but it’s in our best interest to help Jeanette succeed. I don’t think we even want to consider what happens if we’re even a little bit willing to let her flounder because we’re leaving this too much in the hands of a population whose mood can be a bit… fickle.” She remembered how quickly that crowd turned during the protest, how easily they were moved to anger.
