Kenzo thought about the suggestion and then slowly nodded. “That… could work. Although I am curious how we will provide a banquet for a species who is listed as a -” and he looked at the PaDD and scrolled through briefly, “- ‘insectivore and carnivore’. But that is for the caterers to deal with, I suppose.” and he looked at Eeela and smiled slightly. “But a social gathering would do well as a preliminary step. What size would you think would be best suited for the occasion?”
Kenzo
She snorted. “You know how these things go, if we don’t invite everyone someone will be miffed, but I think too large a group would be overwhelming. However, Diplomatic staff from both sides, Cabinet members, senior Starfleet officers and maybe a couple other rather prominent colony presences like the Holloways would probably be fitting, depending on how that would be viewed by the rest of the colony. Always trying to tread that line line between necessity and favouritism. But no more than that. The idea is for people to be able to have actual conversations with each other.”

“Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, perhaps some of the artist community… and probably the Klingons should be included.” Kenzo said and fell silent for a moment as he thought. “What if we held it in the Oed Museum? It is a neutral space, but holds cultural artifacts from all over the Federation. It would give the Vren a sense of the enormity of the Federation; and the fact that cultural independence is not only respected, but also encouraged.”

She snapped her fingers and pointed at him. “I like that a lot. And yes to business community, House Duroc and I really love the idea of some artists there.”
Eela sipped her coffee and leaned back. “Other concerns or tidbits about the Vren we should be considering? A lot of this will be stuff we can hash out when Mathis and Co get here in a couple days, but I think it’s really good that we are taking the lead on this. Us having the banquet even partially planned will demonstrate that people will take directions from us, not the other way around.”
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.
“Agreed.” Kenzo replied. “As for ‘other tidbits’, we should get the Cabinet together and tell them what is coming. As well as your Senior Fleet personnel. I’m sure they won’t mind us calling them all in on short notice… again.” and he chuckled. “But this time you do it. It’s your turn, after all.” and he stood up and went into the kitchen to refresh his tea.

“Fine, we trade off, seems only fair,” she said with a light laugh.
When he returned, Eela considered him for a moment. “I know things could have been approached differently, and you might not agree with me on this, but the whole idea of a Federation Embassy here? It’s a great idea, and it should have happened sooner, preferably before there was a specific situation like we’re currently facing.”
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.
Kenzo looked up at her and said “It would have been a good idea ten years ago… or eight… or even five. Now?Now it will be seen as yet another thumb the Federation is trying to put the colony under. You and I both know that is not the case; but the people here, especially those that have spent decades and even entire lives here, will resent it. And they have just cause for those feelings. An embassy was never even suggested before… despite the thousands of non-Federation ships and individuals that pass through here every day. But now that the Federation has a want or a need, they just snap their fingers.” Kenzo smiled a rueful smile and turned back to his reading. “I would strongly suggest that you discuss the matter with the Ambassador. She needs to realize she isn’t negotiating with just the Vren. And if she makes the Vren the priority? Well… Oed does have a reputation for dealing with high-ranking government officials they are not fond of. As you and I are most keenly aware.”
Hyrushi, Gov.
“Remind me to start wearing body armour once we announce this,” Dasca deadpanned before downing more coffee.
Eela sighed. “I’ll deal with Mathis. It will help that I recently came from the Corps too and she and I have to have it out a little ourselves. Best that that is done in private.”
Rising from her seat and grabbing her cane, Eela moved over to gaze outside, her thoughts a jumble of threads she needed to sort out. But she turned partially to look back at Kenzo. “We don’t have to have everything worked out this morning, and I should get back to my place and see if my massage therapist can sort out my hips. I’ll be in the office after lunch and I’ll call that meeting for this afternoon.”
She considered him for a long moment. “You said last night that I belong here.” Eela broke into a serene smile. “You know what? Despite all this chaos, I think you’re right. I mean, I don’t know how or why, but it seems to me that Oed needed someone like me at this exact time in order to help with all of this. That might sound egotistical, but”-she pressed a hand to her chest-“I feel it deeply.”
