“Oh, yes!” Eela said. “In the cupboard to the left of the stove is a large clear teapot with an infuser insert. If you can grab that, I will get some water going.”
She moved down to the far side of the kitchen closer to the office and grabbed a kettle, filling it with water and setting it to boil. “If you need it, there is a guest bathroom, around the corner and in the main hall. Don’t mind the boxes lining the hallway, I have some specialized bookcases being installed soon.” It was clear by her easy movements and calm demeanour that Eela was having a particularly good morning, which for her was something of a novelty that she didn’t take for granted.

Sharah turned for the cabinet and hoped that the pot was on a lower shelf. The hazards of being short. Luckily for her it was within easy reach and she pulled it down and opened the pot and set the lid beside it, so Eela could add the tea leaves. Then she nodded, “Thank you. I will take you up on that.” Sharah disappeared down the hallway and into the bathroom. She took the time to clean herself up a bit better and repin her hair so it looked a little neater. She also took the time to breath and try and get above the noise. The morning had been lovely; she got to do what she enjoyed the most. Eela was also an easy person to be around - her presence was very centered and stable.
The entire wall of the hallway opposite the boxes was filled with framed images that documented the six decades of Dasca’s life. Family, friends, three quadrants of travel- the highlights of much of her life where there. Though not everything. Nothing from her wedding, and Cory showed up in only one image that was of him and their two teenaged children on Earth (who were unmistakable in their likeness of Eela). Other images on display were also deeply important, like those of all her grandparents and her late parents, or her promotion ceremony when she made Captain. There was a larger on of Eela with a man around her age with reddish hair and a beard that had his arm draped over her shoulders and both wore a contented smile. Out in her work life, Eela might be picky about what she showed and didn’t show of herself, but in the sanctuary that was her home, she did not hide herself. What you saw was what you got.
The morning had been quiet and orderly as people awoke and commenced with their daily routines, but as the morning moved closer to mid day…the noise, even here on the top floor of the building, was nearly overwhelming. Sharah was still adjusting, but she was holding her own. Though some days she didn’t feel like. So it was always a good idea to take a moment and make sure she wouldn’t get blind-sided. She made her way back down the hall to the kitchen. The boxes and indication of a full life. “Are the bookshelves for books or keepsakes or both?”

“Books,” Eela said as she sprinkled some dried orange peel into the infuser insert as the kettle was heating the water. “I have an extensive collection of them I’ve collected over the years. I went to that bookshop that Tenkiller recommended for a quiet place to work and the owner and I had a lovely conversation. I came away with a first edition copy of one my grandmother’s books and realized I don’t have adequate safe storage for antique volumes. I have the rest of my personal effect arriving later this week and Karilan suggested these climate controlled bookcases. The rarer volumes I’ll keep safe in my office, but the rest I’ll have on display,” she said, smiling deeply.

Sharah smiled. “I adore books, real ones, and not something on a PaDD. I have a small collection, but nothing delicate. Most of mine are falling apart from beingvread so often.” The citrus tones of the orange wafted to Sharah and she smiled, focusing on the sensory input and the way it evoked memories and cravings for food. “I haven’t had the chance to venture out except the market. Though some might argue I did that for work and not myself.” Getting out was hard for Sharah. She appeared quite introverted and shy, when the opposite was true. Her condition just made it extremely difficult to go out unless necessary.

Eela studied the younger woman for a moment as she poured the nearly boiling water into the tea pot, carefully to soak the died ingredients. “Small steps. You do what you can. I was there with you at the market and that was not just work, my dear. Take joy where you find it. Some days it’s exceedingly hard to find. And don’t worry if it doesn’t look like what you thought it might. Trust me, some days you don’t even know you’re staring right at it, it seems that foreign.”
“Oh I know that quite well. I was poking fun at myself a bit. A side effect of doing what I enjoy.” Sharah’s life, her moments of joy never looked like expected. She had learned ro take joy where it was offered. “It’s good advice. Sometimes I need reminding.” She smiled gently.
“The tea needs a few minutes to brew. Want to see where I ended up putting that painting?” Dasca said with a tiny smirk.

“I would love to see it. I still have not decided where to put mine.”
