She was silent a moment before as she drew in a deep breath and nodded. “Many,” she said softly, her mind clearly still working through things. “One that first came to mind was the fact that we now know Ambassador Kek being of a certain caste, matters. If this new generation didn’t care, it wouldn’t be noted at all. But since they do pay attention, we would be wise to understand how they might views us in such terms. If their military leaders and politicians come from this Grocklig caste, it could make our interactions easier if we were to emulate such individuals. I would lean towards plain colours of clothing and less ornamentation, at least until the initial formalities are over with.” Eela shrugged. “But these things are hardly straight-forward. For all we know, mimicking could be seen as an insult. Ambassador Mathis can probably give us better insight.” She drank a couple large sips of coffee.

“I don’t want to start things off by appearing that we are compromising ourselves for their comfort or sensibilities.” Kenzo said. “Not because I am trying to be difficult, but because the people of Oed will be watching. This will be a make-or-break moment for us. We must keep in mind our primary responsibility is to the people here. The Diplomatic Corps are responsible for the Vren. I like the idea of neutral colors for the civilian contingents, but I think the Star Fleet contingent should display all the accouterments they normally would.”

“Agreed,” Eela said, sipping more coffee.

“But not going to lie, this Cult of Imog, however small it might be, poses a potential threat to anything good we might be trying to achieve here. My internal red alert is going and right now I can see that there is opportunity here for someone to attempt to ruin any diplomatic ties we manage to form. And that could result in danger to the colony and its inhabitants. Kenzo, I think it’s time we start moving our plans in that regard ahead a little faster. I’m not sure we can afford to wait.”

Kenzo thought for a moment and then said “I think the threat they pose to the Vren is much higher than it is to us; but I agree that we should be mindful. I will broach the subject with Ambassador Kek when I can. Subtly, of course. We do have one significant advantage. The isolation of the Vren means that they do not have exterior agents in play… at least, not in any high levels here. Oed has monitored that sector of space for years. No traffic, no trade, no nothing. So communications and material support would be negligible for anyone trying to ally with them. I think the largest threat would be internal to the Vren. And now we are at a disadvantage, as we do not know what to look for and what would be odd or out of place. We also have no history to compare to…” and his voice trailed off for a moment as a thought occurred to him.

“I will instruct Director James and his lead agents to study the records of the Vren raids. Perhaps they can piece together patterns of behavior and such. At the minimum, it will familiarize our Intelligennce apparatus of the new faction in play.”

Hyrushi, Gov.

She nodded again. “You’re correct that they pose more of an issue internally to the Vren, but let’s not kid ourselves. If we have Vren here at Oed, there’s always a possibility for a believer to have secreted themselves into the contingent and they might want to make the Vren look back and scuttle any talks. As I said last night, while this situation is different than the Khari, desperate people are unpredictable. We cannot afford to be complacent.”

Eela leaned back in her seat. “Now, assuming for a moment that the Vren overtures are accepted and the colonist are at least willing to hear them out, I was thinking about our discussion about sharing meals and building accord that way. How about an opening banquet? A formal gala event that will allow everyone to showcase their own culture and we all sit down to a meal and mingle in a way that is outside of structured talks. They have a high appreciation for ritual and ceremony, so it’s a perfect blending opportunity..”
