One thing that had had not faded since her retirement was her ability to be fully awake in an instant. The voice jarred her out of light sleep and her eyes flew open, parsing the words. Where was she?

Opening her eyes, Eela stared at the ceiling and then let her gaze move about the room. Oh, yeah. Rolling onto her side and then carefully sitting upright, Dasca’s feet found the floor and she stooped to pick up her flat shoes from last night. Bad move. She gritted her jaw as she stood upright and padded barefoot out of the room.

It was clear as she found Kenzo that she was indeed rather hungover but not nearly as much as she could have been. “If you have a copy of the files I’ll read them with coffee. If you serve it here that is. All I know is I need strong caffeine. Very, very strong caffeine.” She was also wishing she had thought to grab her cane from the slider last night but how the hell did she know she’d need it and that she wouldn’t make it back to her place? All she did know if that in her sixties, even with the strong constitution Kenzo had remarked on, she could not handle that much alcohol like she might have even twenty years ago.

Kenzo pointed at a PaDD sitting on the opposite side of the table where he sat, PaDD in hand, reading. “Coffee and tea are on the island in kitchen. As are various breakfasts. Please help yourself. And your brace and cane are by the door. I asked your security detail to send them over.” He read for a few moments and then said “This is going to take a while to digest.”

Kenzo

Eela all but stared at the man for a moment. “Thank you,” she said before she moved off, shoes in hand, to the front door. Her shoes were placed on the floor and she grabbed the brace. It was an easy device to put on, only needing to be wrapped around her torso, so she didn’t even bother going somewhere else to do so. After checking the power cell level, she just lifted her oversized grey sweater enough, pulled the brace around the back, held the front with one arm and then secured the velcro with her free hand. Reaching to the side, she activated the tiny switch that turned it on. The Haliian all but sighed in relief.

Grabbing the cane, she moved back to where Hyrushi sat. Someone who didn’t see her all the time might not notice the subtle differences, but she stood a bit taller and her gait was ever so sightly smoother. Dacsa probably didn’t even need the cane, but she was still tired and didn’t trust her hungover proprioception just yet.

She moved into the kitchen and happily poured herself some coffee before joining Kenzo at the table. Cup down first, she braced her hand on the back of the chair and slowly lowered herself down, the tiny whir happy music to her ears as the whole movement was easier and less painful. Coffee and PADD in hand, she simply set about reading.

Eela read silently, pausing now and again to look up and elsewhere, her gaze pensive as she processed a detail here, and a reality there. And she was a fast reader, but she never rushed her thinking time if she could help it. Her coffee cup ran lower until it got to the three-quarter mark and she set the PADD down, finished. At that point Dasca simply got up to refill her coffee, leaving her cane hooked on the back of her chair.

When she returned, she simply at back down and remained quiet until he was reading for them to discuss the files.

Kenzo had read through the file multiple times, and he finished his final read through and looked at Dasca. “Thoughts, Captain?” he asked and took a sip of tea.

Hyrushi, Gov.

She was silent a moment before as she drew in a deep breath and nodded. “Many,” she said softly, her mind clearly still working through things. “One that first came to mind was the fact that we now know Ambassador Kek being of a certain caste, matters. If this new generation didn’t care, it wouldn’t be noted at all. But since they do pay attention, we would be wise to understand how they might views us in such terms. If their military leaders and politicians come from this Grocklig caste, it could make our interactions easier if we were to emulate such individuals. I would lean towards plain colours of clothing and less ornamentation, at least until the initial formalities are over with.” Eela shrugged. “But these things are hardly straight-forward. For all we know, mimicking could be seen as an insult. Ambassador Mathis can probably give us better insight.” She drank a couple large sips of coffee.

“But not going to lie, this Cult of Imog, however small it might be, poses a potential threat to anything good we might be trying to achieve here. My internal red alert is going and right now I can see that there is opportunity here for someone to attempt to ruin any diplomatic ties we manage to form. And that could result in danger to the colony and its inhabitants. Kenzo, I think it’s time we start moving our plans in that regard ahead a little faster. I’m not sure we can afford to wait.”
