Be selfish. Those two simple words created a visceral reaction within Eela that surprised even her. It was a twisting sensation, a resistance. Sacrifice was something she understood. It was all but embedded in her after so many years. But in more recent years, when she had realized she needed things and asked for them, even took them, it had been thrown back in her face. Selfishness was not a trait she’d ever been allowed. And the realization in this moment was that she was giving everything of herself to this place in the hopes of something in return. And it was there, tiny though those threads were. Oed was weaving itself through her, making her a part of its tapestry. But even as she had these thoughts, she realized it was partly a lie. She hadn’t been giving everything. In small and very specific ways she had been holding back. Afraid.

Reaching for her glass again, she downed a good amount of it. Her fingers tapped briefly on the side of the glass, drumming to the beat of her heart. “I enjoyed my time with the Diplomatic Corps. I liked the work, most of the time, and I was good at it. But… I know myself well enough to know that it was a distraction. Something to tide me over till I figured out where I fit into the grand scheme of everything. With Starfleet I knew instinctively. It didn’t matter where I was or what my exact position was, the uniform and my oath were the binding contract, the thing that drove me each day. I lost that knowing, and even here where things are starting to unfold in ways that make me optimistic… I worry about giving too much and not being left with anything. Which is perhaps a very long winded way of saying that you better not schedule this emergency meeting before Noon, because I’m exhausted and it’s going to take some time for me to get to sleep. I need all the rest I can get at this point.”

Kenzo glanced at his chronometer and gestured with the hand that held his glass. “Inside. Past the wine wall and the kitchen. First door on the left.” and he grinned very subtly. “I know you are a woman of considerable constitution; but this particular liquor is quite deceptive in its strength. I doubt you will make it far before falling over. Personally. I am resigned to sleeping in this chair. Which…” and he drained his glass, picked up the now-empty bottle and shook it to make sure it actually was empty, and sighed deeply “… I am presently preparing to do. There is a glass of water and some aspirin on the bedside table. I would recommend using both before sleep. It will help you tomorrow.” and he leaned back and the chair reclined and a footrest extended. “Unless you wish to remain. Your chair does the same.” He turned his head to look at her. “This is one of those times I would recommend being selfish.” and he turned back, reclined his head, and closed his eyes; hands on his stomach.

Eela snorted. There was something comical about the whole situation and given she hadn’t stood up in awhile there was a real possibility that he was indeed correct and she wouldn’t make it far. “Well, if I stay out here I actually won’t be able to move properly in the morning, so inside it is.” Eela set her empty glass down and eyed the bottle and then pushed herself upright, being mindful that she might not be as steady as her head assumed she was.

Smart move. Everything shifted before her and the lights of the colony looked a bit blurred. “Whoa. It has been some time since I have last felt like this.” Eela laughed lightly. “Good night, Kenzo.”

“Good night, Eela. And when you right your memoirs, tonight’s drink is called shōchū. But this one is triple strength.” Kenzo said and the sighed as he let the welcome sensory blackout begin to take hold.

“Good to know.”

She made very careful steps, mindful that without her brace she was more prone to falls as it was and made her way inside. Eela did indeed take the aspirin and drink some water. For a little while she lay there, her mind awhirl, processing too many things at once. But the liquor had its final say and she finally drifted off, amused at the thought that Oed governance was looking a bit different than she had imagined and that the job description had been a trifle thin.

=/\= Eela… the file has arrived. Breakfast is waiting. =/\= Kenzo’s voice spoke (somewhat loudly) through the bedside comm display.

Kenzo

One thing that had had not faded since her retirement was her ability to be fully awake in an instant. The voice jarred her out of light sleep and her eyes flew open, parsing the words. Where was she?

Opening her eyes, Eela stared at the ceiling and then let her gaze move about the room. Oh, yeah. Rolling onto her side and then carefully sitting upright, Dasca’s feet found the floor and she stooped to pick up her flat shoes from last night. Bad move. She gritted her jaw as she stood upright and padded barefoot out of the room.

It was clear as she found Kenzo that she was indeed rather hungover but not nearly as much as she could have been. “If you have a copy of the files I’ll read them with coffee. If you serve it here that is. All I know is I need strong caffeine. Very, very strong caffeine.” She was also wishing she had thought to grab her cane from the slider last night but how the hell did she know she’d need it and that she wouldn’t make it back to her place? All she did know if that in her sixties, even with the strong constitution Kenzo had remarked on, she could not handle that much alcohol like she might have even twenty years ago.

Kenzo pointed at a PaDD sitting on the opposite side of the table where he sat, PaDD in hand, reading. “Coffee and tea are on the island in kitchen. As are various breakfasts. Please help yourself. And your brace and cane are by the door. I asked your security detail to send them over.” He read for a few moments and then said “This is going to take a while to digest.”
