Eela nodded as she resumed her careful knife work. “Those were complicated times. I am curious how you responded to any of their criticism, especially given how in public facing situations many might want to be able to drawn hard and clear moral lines when there aren’t or might not be,” she said as she very methodically went about peeling the skin off of a round vegetable with a thick and slightly fuzzy skin.

Kenzo shrugged and said “I ignored them, mostly. I think that infuriated them more than any defense of mine would have.” He stopped the tearing of the leaves and looked at Eela, his face blank. “Although I did challenge the Moradian Senator to a duel when he impugned my honor and insulted the people of Norvella. That certainly got their attention.” and he went back to tearing without batting an eye.

Eela couldn’t help but laugh openly. “I can see it now,” she said, her eyes glittering. Chopping the vegetable (which was a vibrant range on the inside) into cubes, she added it to the others resting in a bowl and spun to face the stove. Hovering a hand over the pan, she grabbed some oil and after drizzling in a generous amount, she tipped the pan in a slow circle distributing the oil across the surface. Then she dumped the vegetables in with a sizzle and simply began to stir them with a wooden spoon.
“Where’s the most interesting place you’ve ever eaten?” she asked, leaving the pan’s contents to sauté and turned back to face him, reaching for her glass to have another sip of wine.

Kenzo put the last of the greens in the bowl and washed his hands. “‘Interesting’ is quite subjective. I have eaten many places that were interesting in many ways. A bunker during a shelling. An Inn that has existed in continuous operation for over eight hundred years. On top of a five hundred meter tall building under construction sitting on the framework under the open sky. All interesting for different reasons.” He dried his hands and picked up his wine and turned and looked at her. “What about you?”

Holding her glass, she smiled. “Well there was the diplomatic dinner with the mystic I told you about. That certainly rates high. And there are numerous waterfalls on Halii. My maternal grandparents used to take me for picnics at one near where they lived.” Eela turned half way back towards the pan, grabbed the handle with her right hand and with a forceful flicks of her wrists, tossed the vegetables into the air in an arc so landed back neatly in the pan. She turned back and took a sip of her wine. “But probably the most intense, important, however you might frame it was during the Dominion War. I was a first officer at the time and there was a period where things were going very badly for a lot of the fleets, and resources and morale were low. It was really close to one of the Haliian holidays so when it arrived, I invited as much of the crew that could be free to the lounge and told everyone to bring their ration packs and a blanket. I had some of the crew help me move the tables out of the way and we all just spread out our blankets, plunked ourselves down on the deck and had ourselves a potluck picnic.” She smiled fondly. “One of the traditions of this particular holiday is to express gratitude, so each person, even the people patched in through the comm system from their stations took a moment to say what they were grateful for. I still don’t know where they cobbled the traditional decorations from, but I remember thinking at the time that I could eat an exquisite meal in the fanciest place in the galaxy but there was nowhere else I’d have rather been in that moment. Because for a little while we all got to remember that we were stuck in it together.” She shrugged a little. Eela was a rather sentimental woman, even if it didn’t always come across that way in her day-to-day work life. And with the life she had lived so far she felt she had earned the right to be unapologetically sentimental as well when she chose.

“Intersting indeed…” Kenzo said as he dried his hands and picked up his glass and turned to face her. “I have often wondered at the difference in emotions between those fighting and those simply caught in the crossfire.” he said while seemingly contemplating the wine in his glass. “And what I found was that what those fighting had more so than the others was ‘resolve’. Regardless of the side, those doing the labor of war had a resolve to see it done. Those that weren’t fighting, but were unfortunate enough to find themselves involved, were not gifted with that aspect. And I think that intensified their fear. Wholly unfair.” and he took a sip. “My thought was that prior to any armed conflict, each side should sit down and put in writing what they hope to accomplish by the war. Then… all sides go to an uninhabited world and fight it out. When a winner is determined, the announcement is made and that is it. Things change according to the agreement, but the civilians are not subjected to the agonies of the war itself.”
