That made Dasca sit back in her seat, a tiny frown appearing on her face. “Then the risk is even greater than just a portion of the population. My time with the Khari… Governor, essentially they were a people on the brink of civil war who agreed to an outside mediator. The first mediator sent in left after a month with no progress, but the Khari were still adamant about having help. So they sent me. I was there for almost a year, but the crucial part of their situation was that the progressive leaning side was ready to leave the planet entirely and start over elsewhere. But this group included large portions of their intellectuals and scientists. As well as many in their arts communities. For them to all leave would have been a devastating blow to their culture. But they felt like they were being forced to choose between a form of exile and war and neither were options they actually wanted. Obviously the situation with the Vren is different, but I will be mindful as we proceed.”

Jeanette grinned. =/\=I can do you one better. I have all the reports gathered thus far from the contact teams, initial science council verification as well as the profilers. The Vren have also provided a bunch of their information on history and culture. Look, it’s risky as all hell and if it weren’t for the ecological disaster threatening to kill off all their flora and fauna, I’d be inclined to label this as a possible prelude to invasion. But I’ve been at this a really long time and my instincts tell me they’re for real. Those that have reached out want to put their best face forward. I think we at least owe it to them and ourselves to hear them out. Cautiously, of course.=/\=

Hyrushi kept frowning. =/\= Ambassador, why not a neutral location? At least at the beginning. A starship positioned between the two worlds, perhaps. Or a habitat could be built in a matter of weeks on a natural or artificial asteroid for the meetings to be held at. My concern is that the history of the Vren with regards to Oed V is wholly problematic. The citizens of the colony are not going to appreciate hosting the raiders that killed many family members not all that long ago. And it is sure to stir up some of the anti-Star Fleet sentiment that is just now starting to wane thanks to the Lieutenant Governor’s handling of a recent… issue. A lot of people think Star Fleet dropped the ball in their defense of the colony at that time. Bringing them here is asking a lot of the older citizenry. Have the Vren offered any kind of peace offering or apology for their previous incursions? =/\=

Mathis nodded with understanding. =/\=And those are great questions and concerns. Ones that won’t just be brushed aside either, I assure you. But I can’t answer that very well myself. But I do know someone who can. If you are both willing, I have the Vren Ambassador willing to speak with you. I can say all sorts of things but at the end of the day I think it would be good to hear it directly, don’t you?=/\=

“Can’t hurt,” Eela directed towards Kenzo. “I’d rather be in the same room in order to evaluate honesty, but I don’t know anything about them yet, so I don’t know if it’s possible. A subspace call is about as risk free as we can get.”

Hyrushi didn’t speak, but remained motionless for a moment before he simply nodded in agreement.

A few minutes later, Mathis’ image returned and she gave a nod to let them know it worked and a moment later her screen split in two with none other than a previously unseen member of the Vren. =/\=Ambassador Griget Kek, I’d like to introduce you Oed Five’s leaders, Governor Kenzo B’tren-Hyrushi and Lieutenant Governor Eela Dasca.=/\= Her expression was light but very much hide anything she might actually be feeling about all of this.

The face that now came online was… well… it was a frog. A Terran Poison Dart frog, to be more precise. Bright red and blue colors contrasted withe the large black eyes on either side of the top of their head; and symmetrical markings of black lines and hash marks dotted the sides of their face and neck. They appeared to be in some kind of jungle, judging from the scenery behind them.

Dasca was actually impressed with Kek’s initial command over Federation Standard, even though she didn’t know how long they had been practicing. Hyrushi’s response was the diplomatic one and allowed Eela to voice their concerns. Dasca placed a palm to her chest and bowed her head. =/\=Well met, Ambassador Kek. I can assure you that our scientists are a very determined and creative group. If there is something that can be done to aide your world, I’m sure they will find a way. that being said, Ambassador Mathis has expressed that the hope is to have negotiations and cultural exchanges here on Oed. I want you to understand that we do not oppose this idea outright, but the Governor and I have some… concerns. This is the first time we’ve seen your people face to face. For many of the people living on the colony, all they know of the Vren is the result of the raids. Those raids affected people’s lives and we would be unwise leaders if we ignored those fears and didn’t do something to reassure our people. So I in turn ask you the same. What reassurances, if any at all, can you give?=/\= As a captain and a diplomat Eela had never hid behind flowery words. She was an open person who laid the issue out and asked for transparency in return. Did it always go over well? No. But Mathis was asking a lot of Oed in this moment and if Kek was truly going to be a voice for their people, she wanted to know what these people had to say about their shared history.

The Vren Ambassador was silent a long moment. They blinked several times, but their face didn’t move from the screen. Soon, they gave a slight nod and said =/\= Yes… I understand the sentimentality of your concerning. The history-past is troublem-matic for both of us peoples. But in orders for I to give… moment, please…” and their head shifted ever so slightly to the side and they said “Re…a…shure…ant…says.” off to the side and there was a pause and then what seemed to be a cacophanous croak / hiss / howl. The Ambassador nodded once as if in understanding and turned back to the screen. =/\= You want promise from Vren to make things… feelings… better. What can I do to show we mean peace? =/\=
