Kenzo was practiced in the art of remaining expressionless. His years of politicking and diplomacy had made keeping a neutral expression second nature. So when his eyebrows arched in surprise, there was no doubt it was genuine and powerful. “The Vren, Madame Ambassador? The same Vren who raided Oed V all those years ago… and then just vanished? That Vren?” he asked. He shook his head and then said “The disaster must be truly cataclysmic, in that case. Can you tell us what it is? Or what the Federation is offering in the way of assistance? In short, Madame Ambassador…” and he leaned forward as his look became quite serious.

“How can Oed V help?”

The name Vren sparked fear in many people on Oed. They were the mythical boogeyman to most who had come well after the last raid. This was a fascinating development and suddenly Mathis’ message made utter sense, much as Jeannette had said it would. This was not a topic for casual discussion where the public might get wind of it before they were ready and Eela knew they would have to tread carefully. Sounded like the story of her life here so far.

=/\=My science background is linguistics, not astrophysics or ecology, but best I understand it, massive pieces of debris entered the system and are interrupting their planet’s light and heat levels from the sun, altering their climate drastically. They are an amphibious species and require high humidity and essentially their world is drying up and it’s affecting everything including the nurseries that incubate their young. It’s that serious. They are essentially desperate and those that have reached out seem to be in a mindstate that is cooperative, which as we all know is unusual given the our history with them. The Federation Science Council has agreed to offering whatever assistance we can… within reason. We won’t make blanket promises, especially given the uncertainties present. As the closest inhabited world to Alpha Oradiz IV, their homeworld, Oed is in a unique position to provide a meeting place. In fact, in some of the discussions they had with us, they’ve expressed that they would like to move past the aggression previously inflicted on the colony. I wouldn’t go so far as to say they want to make amends, but it does seem they would like the opportunity to start again. Oed is the perfect staging ground for research and diplomatic exchanges. Their space is 80 lightyears from you, so it makes sense that they have a contingent present on Oed.... which poses it’s own considerations=/\=

Mathis nodded. =/\=The immediate desire, need, however you want to see it, is to have a Vren diplomatic party present on Oed Five. It just makes too much sense, rather than travelling back and forth two weeks at a time, or doing everything over subspace. I can tell you from all my years doing this, and I’m pretty sure Dasca will agree with me, that the best way to build a true rapport with these people and accomplish something useful is to be face-to-face, in person. If all goes well and things prove to be stabile diplomatically, then it’s not out of the realm of possibility that they could establish their own embassy on the colony.=/\=

Mathis shifted her attention more clearly to Dasca with a warm smile of someone well acquainted. =/\=Lieutenant Governor, this is where your experience with the Khari might be very useful. The Vren seem to be undergoing a significant cultural shift where the younger generations are more open and curious and willing to reach out, while the, for lack of a better phrase, old guard, would rather keep to their xenophobic ways. There’s little evidence that people in power on Alpha Oradiz IV, Or Tutsikara as they call it, are denying the crisis, but what to do about it and involving others seems to be a source of conflict.=/\=

That made Dasca sit back in her seat, a tiny frown appearing on her face. “Then the risk is even greater than just a portion of the population. My time with the Khari… Governor, essentially they were a people on the brink of civil war who agreed to an outside mediator. The first mediator sent in left after a month with no progress, but the Khari were still adamant about having help. So they sent me. I was there for almost a year, but the crucial part of their situation was that the progressive leaning side was ready to leave the planet entirely and start over elsewhere. But this group included large portions of their intellectuals and scientists. As well as many in their arts communities. For them to all leave would have been a devastating blow to their culture. But they felt like they were being forced to choose between a form of exile and war and neither were options they actually wanted. Obviously the situation with the Vren is different, but I will be mindful as we proceed.”

Jeanette grinned. =/\=I can do you one better. I have all the reports gathered thus far from the contact teams, initial science council verification as well as the profilers. The Vren have also provided a bunch of their information on history and culture. Look, it’s risky as all hell and if it weren’t for the ecological disaster threatening to kill off all their flora and fauna, I’d be inclined to label this as a possible prelude to invasion. But I’ve been at this a really long time and my instincts tell me they’re for real. Those that have reached out want to put their best face forward. I think we at least owe it to them and ourselves to hear them out. Cautiously, of course.=/\=

Hyrushi kept frowning. =/\= Ambassador, why not a neutral location? At least at the beginning. A starship positioned between the two worlds, perhaps. Or a habitat could be built in a matter of weeks on a natural or artificial asteroid for the meetings to be held at. My concern is that the history of the Vren with regards to Oed V is wholly problematic. The citizens of the colony are not going to appreciate hosting the raiders that killed many family members not all that long ago. And it is sure to stir up some of the anti-Star Fleet sentiment that is just now starting to wane thanks to the Lieutenant Governor’s handling of a recent… issue. A lot of people think Star Fleet dropped the ball in their defense of the colony at that time. Bringing them here is asking a lot of the older citizenry. Have the Vren offered any kind of peace offering or apology for their previous incursions? =/\=
