As discreet as she had been about her dinner plans, Eela was still a little nervous. Her and the Governor seemed to have a solid working relationship already and at least a measure of trust. Was he still hesitantly optimistic about her appointment? Her impressions thus far was that she had at least proved herself to be more than what everyone else expected her to be. If there was one thing Dasca had never been it was expected.

The thought made her smirk as she puttered in the kitchen. Cory had always told her that she was a deeply layered and complex woman- she didn’t disagree. Sometimes though those layers made her hard to figure out at times, even as she could be a source of solidity, of constancy. As a Starfleet officer, she had operated with a small measure of predictability predicated on her deep convictions and compassion. Now though, things were different. Not her convictions or compassion, but the predictability was less. Much to her own surprise and sometimes dismay. When you yourself didn’t know how you would react it made you slightly reactive and she hated this part of her shifted personality. It was the thing she worked to temper the most.

Chopping some root vegetables, she tossed them into a hot pan to sauté, humming along to the eclectic mix of music playing in the background. It was all instrumental, but were recordings she had gathered over her life from places all over the galaxy, including her homeworld.

The doors to the lift slid open and Hyrushi stepped out. He was wearing a dark white linen suit and a dark blue collared shirt, but no tie. He paused at the door to the Lieutenant Governor’s apartment and pressed the chime.

Hearing that her guest was here, Eela wiped her hands and moved out of the kitchen and down the long hallway that bisected the length of her single floor penthouse. The hard floors were a black matte stone with white veining and she actually appreciated them. They grounded a person in the place, what with the high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows on exterior walls and original white paint on every wall. Her daughter’s assessment of the place had been correct, but she had had at least some painting done and some decorating. The walls of the public spaces were a warm taupe colour that was a touch more brown than grey.

Her feet moved almost silently along the floor, encased in silver beaded black sheru, a soft soled decorative Haliian shoe that was meant entirely for indoor spaces. Her back thanked her for not walking barefoot on the hard surfaces where there were no carpets or rugs. A pleated black skirt in a soft material swept along with her, hovering above her ankles and her top was a loosely fitted blouse with wide sleeves that stopped at the elbow, and presented a swirl of blues and greens in a watercolour effect. Her long black and silver hair hung loose down her back, aside from the very front and sides that were pulled back off her face with a blue jewelled clip.

In the generous foyer, she checked the monitor on the side and reached out to touch part of the panel. The door unlocked and she swung it open with a beaming smile. “Kenzo! Welcome. Come on in,” she said with a sweeping gesture as she stepped to the side.

“Thank yiu for having me. I appreciate the invitation.” Hyrushi replied cooly, but not in an unfriendly tone.

“You know, it wasn’t until today that I realized just how ambitious us getting a chance to socialize outside of work this week truly was. But I’m so glad we could make it happen.”

“Indeed. It has been an… eventful week to say the least. But the colony still stands, so I think we earned a small respite.”

“Hopefully it’s just enough to prepare us for next week,” Dasca said, knowing that she had some difficult tasks ahead of her.

The foyer had a closet to the right and another door on the left that led to a storage room. But there were also two comfortable arm chairs in a floral pattern on either side of a console table. On the walls were a couple of art pieces: a delicate pencil drawing of some sort of shop with jars of items on shelves behind the counter, and a watercolour style painting of an aurora sweeping over the night sky, illuminating a lush looking hillside. The sight lines from the front door looked right into the open plan dining room which held double doors onto the large patio that spanned two-thirds the length of the penthouse. There were no buildings right beside hers that blocked the view, so one could see the central part of the colony in and around the Government Tower.

“Let me know if you’d like to hang up your coat. There’s room in the closet for it,” Eela said. She was, among many things, a consummate hostess.

Hyrushi inclined his head and said “Yes, thank you. And this is for you.” and he handed her a bottle of wine. “That is from the last active winery on Oed. It was lost when the comet struck. But, hopefully, new vineyards will spring up as we progress.”

Hyrushi, Gov.

She took the bottle with a soft smile. “Hmm, yes, a lovely and fitting sentiment I think, thank you.” The wine was definitely of an age and she was immensely curious what it would be like.

When offered his jacket, she set the bottle on the console table and hung up the garment in the closet, closing the door with a click.

Retrieving the bottle, she gestured. “Come on, we’ll head to the kitchen. Do you cook?” she asked as she moved through the foyer to the main hallway. She turned left.

“I do, but its not necessarily a passion. I can cook for company and, mostly, not embarrass myself.” Hyrushi replied as he looked around.

The entire wall of the hallway opposite the foyer was filled with framed images that documented the six decades and of Dasca’s life. Family, friends, three quadrants of travel- the highlights of much of her life where there. Though not everything. Nothing from her wedding, and Cory showed up in only one image that was of him and their two teenaged children on Earth. She hadn’t cut him out of her life- that was impossible- but she was giving herself room to disentangle herself from a shared life. Other images on display were also deeply important, like those of all her grandparents and her late parents, or her promotion ceremony when she made Captain. Out in her work life, Eela might be picky about what she showed and didn’t show of herself, but in the sanctuary that was her home, she did not hide herself. What you saw was what you got.

He took note of the pictures, the people present and not present, as the moved down the hall. What one chose to display in one’s own home said a great deal about them.

The hallway led to the side of the apartment with the spare rooms, her office and the family area that included the kitchen, that was open plan to a small casual eating area and a cozy sitting nook. The smell of baked fish was starting to be apparent but it wasn’t intense. She hung a right at her office and stepped into the large and well appointed kitchen. It was clear by the tools and equipment that it was meant for someone who enjoyed cooking. She set the wine bottle on the counter of the island near a vase of flowers and hunted for some glasses. “I had the lovely opportunity to check out the farmer’s market this morning. It’s going to be a regular thing I hope, though Doctor Fayth did joke she could write me a doctor’s note if work tries to stop me,” she said with glint of humour in her eyes.

~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.

“I hope the note will not be necessary, …” Hyrushi said with a slight smile, “-… but it may be wise to keep that handy.”
