He wasn’t wrong but she also knew that there was a level of persistence there that not everyone had. Not everyone was able to keep trying even when it risked his own career. He was looking out for people and Dasca admired him for that.

There were a couple other things she needed to do still though, so while she had time she figured she might as well. First was to look up Lieutenant Commander Jackson Hyde’s record and his recent activity. She expected it to be polished over, but she could also read between the lines. Sometimes it was about what people didn’t say as it was about what they did say. She was looking for the timing of his orders with anything else that might be notable. What had happened between Vargas’s initial AWOL and the issuing of the warrant. That was a long time. It should have been fairly soon after. Why wasn’t it? She already had a pretty good idea, but his was an important piece of this puzzle.

Hyde’s record was unremarkable and wholly unimpressive… save for the selection of duty stations he has been placed in. Postings personnel strive for years to get selected for were all over his record. Amazing, considering he had nothing in the way of exemplary or even above average service.

The Vargas issue took some piecing together, and it wasn’t until she cross referenced the file from Dreen that something stood out: As the newly assigned Executive Officer and Chief Engineer of a vessel designated for extended tours of duty, both Hdla-C’thol and C’thol were currently subject to a full record review. Any anomoly… such as a deserter that hadn’t been apprehended and whose complaints (buried or not) were still outstanding… would cast a negative light on the candidate.

They were married. Of course they were. It matched her gut instinct when she had first delved into this mess that the two were romantically involved. It made sense that they would cover each other’s backs, but what she still couldn’t pinpoint and these files couldn’t tell her was why*. Not events now. That made perfect sense, but back then with Vargas. Why did Hd’la act so terrible to the man? Had he done something to piss her off?

Time for the next point on her list: the records of Hd’la. Anything that could help her understand their actions and frame of mind could make a big difference here. She wasn’t just looking at this from a position of authority, but the psychologist in her wanted to gather a solid profile of each person involved.

The file of the newly appointed Chief Engineer was almost the same as the others: unexceptional, bland, and barely of a caliber to warrant such a position. What was noteworthy was her technical scores. For a Chief Engineer, they should be in the top ten percent at a minimum. Hers were barely in the top twenty-five. But she was still promoted, given more and more responsibility, and moved up the chain. Reviewing her assignments was the same as the others. Prominent duty stations with no real reason for the selection… except that each of them were accompanied by a written recommendation or even a direct order from one Admiral Durellian Q’inn. A quick look at the Admiral revealed he had a step-daughter… Commander Hd’la. His only living child with the death of his own daughter from his first marriage some twenty years prior.

There were also a steady stream of warnings and write-ups (informal, of course) about her tendency to force others to do her work. And if they didn’t, or did a poor job, she would use her position to make their lives far more difficult than they should be. In fact, there was a psychological note in one of the files that said she had a malicious tendency to those she saw as weak. But that note was redacted form her personnel record. It was only found in her medical file, and only if one was looking hard enough.
