Lieutenant Commander Dreen was a geologist specializing in subsurface destabilization and ground shifting. He had a very good record, many Commendations from as high up as the Federation Science Council, and was a Daystrom Award winner. He was currently assigned to Federation Colonial Development as a visiting consultant of something called ‘Project Haven’t.

Eela drummed her fingers on her desk, breathing in and out a few times before she went ahead and did the thing she already knew she would: she placed the call. Securely, of course. The last thing she needed was someone catching on to her investigation before she was ready, though she also knew that the incident at the embassy probably already did that anyway. Still, precautions were necessary. She knew the call might take awhile (if she could even get through and the commander was even in the office), so she got up and moved around, stretching her back a bit before getting a coffee from the replicator in her office and retaking her seat.

It took a few minutes, but soon the computer chirped that the call was connected.
A Bolian man’s face was on the screen, a confused and slightly concerned look on his face. =/\= Lieutenant Governor Dasca, Ma’am. This is truly an… um… unexpected call. How can I be of service, Ma’am? =/\=
Dreen
Okay, well she didn’t need to introduce herself, so that made things easier. =/\=Lieutenant Commander Dreen, I am hoping you might be able to help me. You see, I am investigating a Starfleet related incident here on Oed Five and in the course of it, your name came up. If it’s not too much trouble, I was hoping you could tell me about your time at the Academy. Specifically what led you to request the room change and push back your start year? I couldn’t find any details on the matter.=/\=
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov
Dreen’s face went from confused to annoyed in an instant. =/\= Its those three twats again, isn’t it? C’thol and Ans’lik and Hyde. I swear to the goddesses the day I met them was the worst day of my life. =/\= and he began mumbling curses for several moments before composing himself.
Her higher arched brows were her only outwards response but inward she felt elation that she was on the right path.
=/\= Apologies, Captain. I hold very strong feelings about those three. To your question, I requested a change because my roommates were and are quite simply the most lying, backstabbing, conniving, self-serving manipulators in the galaxy. They are a complete and utter anathema to everything Star Fleet is supposed to stand for; and the fact that they are not only still wearing the uniform and responsible for the lives of others and not in a penal colony for life is beyond me and a black eye to the entire Fleet. =/\=
Dreen
Dasca took a slow breath in and out and nodded. =/\=Without compromising the investigation I’m running all I can say is yes, their names are involved. What I need to know are the details from your experiences. What exactly did they do and is there any proof? Without evidence, it’s all hearsay. I have some evidence, but the more I have, the better case I can take to the Judge Advocate General.=/\=
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov
Dreen sighed and looked away from the screen a moment. Dasca’s computer chirped and received a large file. =/\= There. That is everything I have. Sixteen years of monitoring and compiling incident reports, fitness reports that were amended after they were submitted, complaints that were buried, and first-hand accounts of their actions. I have been trying to get someone… anyone… to listen for almost two decades. And all it has gotten me is a reputation as a whiner and someone who holds a grudge from their time at the Academy. They have very influential friends and relations. Thats the only reason those morons are where they are. Please.. look for yourself. The one thing they can’t fudge is their technical assessments. Because they are all automated. Look at them. All three are below average in every critical technical skill for their specialties. And now? Now one of them is responsible for an entire deep space exploration vessel! If the captain of that ship is incapacitated, Captain… =/\= and Dreen took a dep breath and exhaled slowly.
=/\= They’re all going to die, Captain. With him at the helmet, they are in absolute danger. =/\=
Dreen
A chill ran through her and for a moment Eela just forced herself to breath. Her gaze shifted to one of both deep understanding and conviction. =/\=I hear you. They’ve caused great harm to someone else as well and I will do everything I can to prevent it anymore harm to befall others. I know you don’t know me, Dreen, but I don’t make promises for the hell of it. You can trust me with this. And if you’re at all uncertain about that, just look up my record. It will tell you everything you need to know.=/\=
She bowed her head to him. =/\=Thank you for your courage, for being willing to speak up. Starfleet and the Federation would be so much the better if more people were like you.=/\=
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov
=/\= No, Captain. We’d be better with less people like them. =/\= and he nodded once to her and the comm went silent.
Dreen
He wasn’t wrong but she also knew that there was a level of persistence there that not everyone had. Not everyone was able to keep trying even when it risked his own career. He was looking out for people and Dasca admired him for that.
There were a couple other things she needed to do still though, so while she had time she figured she might as well. First was to look up Lieutenant Commander Jackson Hyde’s record and his recent activity. She expected it to be polished over, but she could also read between the lines. Sometimes it was about what people didn’t say as it was about what they did say. She was looking for the timing of his orders with anything else that might be notable. What had happened between Vargas’s initial AWOL and the issuing of the warrant. That was a long time. It should have been fairly soon after. Why wasn’t it? She already had a pretty good idea, but his was an important piece of this puzzle.
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.
Hyde’s record was unremarkable and wholly unimpressive… save for the selection of duty stations he has been placed in. Postings personnel strive for years to get selected for were all over his record. Amazing, considering he had nothing in the way of exemplary or even above average service.
The Vargas issue took some piecing together, and it wasn’t until she cross referenced the file from Dreen that something stood out: As the newly assigned Executive Officer and Chief Engineer of a vessel designated for extended tours of duty, both Hdla-C’thol and C’thol were currently subject to a full record review. Any anomoly… such as a deserter that hadn’t been apprehended and whose complaints (buried or not) were still outstanding… would cast a negative light on the candidate.
