Dasca couldn’t help but smirk as the man walked away. Her sentiments were not far from his. Heads were going to roll and she was not going to allow anyone to get away with anything. Not on her watch. “Qapla’, Lord Duroc,” Eela said to his retreating form before she spun on her heel and headed back out.

Back in the slider, Eela immediately called her Aide-de-Camp, Lt. Watts. “I need every record we can get access to on a Lieutenant Luis Vargas. I have security clearance so unless something is classified, it shouldn’t be a problem. I also want to know where his former DH, XO and CO are these days and also who issued the warrant for Vargas’ arrest.”

“Yes. I have a meeting with the Governor in three hours and I want to have the full picture before I do.”

A little while later, Eela arrived back at the Government Tower and made her way up to her office. She stopped to get Cort to rearrange her afternoon and then moved into her office where Sherri had left her everything the woman could find, some which required Dasca’s clearance to be inputted to read, naturally, and she settled into her chair to delve into what was going to be a huge damned mess.

The personnel file on Vargas was nothing out of the norm. Average Engineer, slightly above average test scores, promoted as was reasonable. Nothing stellar, but nothing negative, either. It wasn’t until the last year of his service that things seemed to go awry. The DH in charge of him, one Lieutenant Commander Balindre Hdla, had nothing but negative reviews of the man. Below average fitness reports, disciplinary write-ups, restriction to quarters on several occasions. She even recommended a reduction in rank at one point, a very odd note in Star Fleet. It was a very different person from the previous years of service where Vargas seemed to be simply doing his job.

There were some counseling notes in the file… but seemingly very broad and open ended. Adding them up, even in the last year of Vargas’s service, there were only four such notes for entire year. On closer inspection, it seemed that the notes didn’t quite fit into the standard format for the file either… almost like they had been an after thought of some kind.

The last file was the requested locations:

The former DH was now Commander Hdla-C’thol, and she was the Chief Engineer of the USS DeepBlue, an exploratory vessel that was about to be commissioned in the next few months.

The Executive Officer over Vargas was Commander Gren C’thol. He was now Captain C’thol and was the Executive Officer assigned to the DeepBlue.

The former Commanding Officer was Captain Bertrand Russel. He retired a few weeks after Vargas went AWOL, and was now living on Earth in the area around the Academy in San Francisco.

The warrant had been issued from the Starbase 1 Security office, but oddly had been immediately transmitted to Oed… but not to the Security desk. It went directly to the leader of the team that had walked into the House Duroc Embassy - one Lieutenant Commander Ans’lik.

Curses flowed through her mind as she read through the files and saw the all too obvious gaps. It was good to confirm the lack of counselling surrounding his request for discharge. It was standard procedure and one that had been completely ignored. She pulled up the Counsellor’s file to see what the story was there, because the notes said nothing and there should have been way more, especially after the incident that claimed his shipmates. Trauma was no small thing and she and other counsellors hadn’t pushed Starfleet Command to have counselling services on duty where people actually served just for the hell of it. The sooner someone had support after any significant event, the better they did going forward. Vargas had slipped through the cracks, or as she saw it, pushed through the cracks. And right now she needed evidence to prove it.
