There was a vast sense of relief when she saw Kristina that was short lived due to the whirlwind of motion and information Kristina shared with her. She found herself in the room with what apparently was Halai from a different universe. She had of course studied cases concerning individuals from other universes in her time as an intern with Star Fleet. It was fascinating, the world of possibilities that such universes existing created. Still, she turned her gaze to look at the other form of her friend and sigh for a moment feeling sadness that this poor woman had gone through such trauma. Before she could say anything however, a man she had never met greeted her.

She gazed at him with her dark blue eyes and took a moment to catch up mentally to everything. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She nodded respectfully and quietly spoke. “Do not worry yourself sir. I can keep my voice and emotions low enough so as not to disturb the patient.”

Astrid turned to Kristina. “Of course I am aware of your sister’s abilities. Do they have something to do with what happened to her?”

Keeping her voice low, Kristina half nodded. “More like this woman, Lai, has far more developed abilities and they are apparently in high demand where she comes from.” She gestured to the man. “This is her… companion, Akem.” At least that much was the same in this Universe. “They’ve been … hunted. And yes it is what it sounds like. But what I can tell, their entry into this universe was an accident but at this point it’s far safer than where they came from. Even if we knew how to send them back, which at this point we know very little about how it happened, I’m not sure it would be humane.” Speaking to a judge about something that might be about civil liberties certainly had its advantages.

Akem kept his calm on the exterior. Even if they could send him back, he was unwilling to go. He was here to protect Lai, no matter the cost. If they decided to send them back, he would resist. There was no way he and Lai were going back.

“Is it possible to stay here?” He inquired thoughtfully.

Kristina turned towards him, her face softening. “They can’t send you back, surely? We don’t even have that kind of technology around here. Even if they did, it would take time. Maybe you could make a case to the Federation for asylum?” she said before looking back to Astrid for confirmation it was a valid idea.

Her eyes rose as the question was presented to her. She knew of some cases involving others from alternate universes, though often it was due to the damage and aws they broke. “I would have to look into the intricacies of the law, but offhand I think it can be done. I can get st…”

At that moment, Akem could a stirring within Lai. The inner working of her mind coming back to the surface seemed almost imminent as he started to turn.

A murmur escaped Lai’s lips as she slept, following by a frown settling into her features. Despite the calm Akem surrounded her with, her mind was still processing what had happened to them. Hot pain pierced her body and she gasped, bolting upright, hands pressed to the place where the bullet moved through her chest. Eyes wide with terror, they were the same gold-ringed hazel eyes that Halai had and she surely was the mirror of the other woman despite the missing facial tattoos.

She turned as the woman who so mirrored Halai sat up with a jolt. Astrid stepped forward until she remembered that this was not her friend and likely had no idea who she was. The last thing she wished to do was cause this poor woman any more harm so she took a step back to allow the other two in the room to go to her instead.

“Lai,” he said as he quickly stepped to her, hands reaching to her to touch as he allowed his mind to connect with hers. He brought his eyes directly to her own. “You’re safe. I’m not letting anymore happen to you.” He then brought one hand gently to her face.
