Kenzo was silent. Even as Eela spoke, he was like a statue. But his eyes never left hers. He listened to each and every word… carefully… and paid attention as if she was the only speaking person in the galaxy. He remained silent onc she had finished, but finally moved enough to puck up the tea in front of him and take a sip. He regarded Eela… this new woman who was sent, like so many others, by an administrative force that had showed the colony more contempt than care. Finally, after several minutes of silence, he spoke.
“First, allow me to say that I am honored by your candor. I know that sharing such thoughts with a stranger was not easy… but I appreciate your openess. Second, please accept these words of caution as they are intended… not as a judgement… but as an honest warning based on my desire to see this relationship succeed. Be careful, Eela, in searching for yourself and seeking to discover who you are here. Oed can show that to you, yes. But Oed is honest… sometimes brutally so. It will test you like no other place. I believe you when you say you think if you give Oed a chance and truly embrace life here you will find out who you are. And I sincerely hope you do like that person. But keep in mind… even if you don’t… there will still be almost five million people relying on you. So, liking the new you or not, you have a job to do. And everyone here, myself included, would like to see you be successful. Because your success is ours.”
Hyrushi, Gov
Eela smiled. Not a polite one, or a diplomatic one, but a genuine smile that touched her eyes. “I agree. And I hear your warning and be sure to take it in as I go through this process. Regardless of my personal reasons for being here, you are correct. But dedication to the people who rely on me is something you don’t have to worry about. It’s probably the largest piece of me that still exists from before. But I can’t guarantee I won’t stumble. To make such a promise would discount people’s nature and reality. Decorated like I am and with the clout I’ve explained, at the end of the day I’m still just a woman doing her best to find her way in this galaxy. Have high expectations of me, Kenzo, but also allow me to not always meet them. And I will do the same for you.”
“No one is perfect, Eela.” Kenzo replied, his face still without expression. “I do, however, expect everyone in this government to strive for it. We all make mistakes, myself included. What I insist upon is keeping them manageable.”
Taking a sip and setting her tea cup back on the desk in front of her, Dasca considered this man and what she knew of him, both from his file and her assessment thus far. “Tell me who you see when you look in the mirror. Who is Kenzo?” Was it asking too much, too soon? Perhaps. But something about the urgent situation she had arrived within and the parade of predecessors who had not been able to stick it out told her that the sooner they had more than a basic rapport the better off they would be. Also, Eela was not afraid of taking risks.

Kenzo took a drink and said “I see myself. As I am. A man born of parents of two wholly seperatwe worlds. Raised in love and support to be the best version of myself that I can be, and to determine that for myself and not allow others to dictate my path. I see that, and no more. Because that is who I am. What I do and how I think are shaped by my experiences. But at my core I simply me.” and he took a drink and a very small smile pulled at the corner of his mouth.
“I also hope that ‘me’ is enough, from time to time.”
Hyrushi, Gov
“As do I,” she said sincerely, bring her cup to her lips. For a moment she just savoured the sip before she set it down again and focused on the man before her.
“Obviously, I have information provided to me, and I intend to keep on the staff attached to the Office of Lieutenant Governor, unless there is a particular reason not to, but the next few days are going to be crucial. So, a couple things. First, how do you want to announce my appointment, and are there any reputable news outlets the cabinet prefers over others and why?”
~Eela Dasca, Lt. Gov.
Hyrushi shook his head slightly and said “We do not favor any one or few outlets. We release all statements via the colonial comm network and to all reporting agencies simultaneously. We do not conduct exclusive interviews, but we are lacking in a Press Secretary, so that means time devoted regularly to press conferences. I have looked for an acceptable candidate, but as of yet I have had little progress in that arena. As for your announcement, I was planning a press co feremce for this evening to address the protest issue. Would you be willing to be present? We can introduce you publicly then.”
Hyrushi, Gov
Eela nodded. “I can be there. Just tell me where and when.” The press corps situation didn’t surprise her, but she asked specifically to make sure she understood the set-up. No use stepping on toes before she was even settled. She had had an idea about a way for people to get to know her, but based on his statements that would be a no-go. It seemed like public engagements were going to be the way to go.
She exhaled a breath that held the weight of the myriad of tasks and appointments that were building up in her mind. “Well, unless there is anything else you want to go over right now, I should go find my office, meet and staff and find my way around this place. It’ll be a couple days before I’ve settled on accommodations, but once I do, I’d like to invite you for dinner. It’s been awhile since I got to cook for anyone and it would give us a chance to chat some more outside of meetings. You interested?”
