Hyrushi inclined his head slightly and said “I think we will be fine.” and he grasped her hand. His mind was a blank wall. No texture, no ripples. Smooth and impenetrable. Truly mpressive for someone only half Betazoid. “My talents lie in empathy, so we should not intrude too much upon one another.” and he released her hand.

There was something refreshing and calm about a blank mind because it meant she didn’t need to filter if she chose to drop her shields. Ut she did not out of respect. “Well, I’m an empath as well, but like you said, we won’t intrude on each other.”

Hyrushi pressed an icon on his desk interface and then said “Please be seated, won’t you?” and took a seat himself. “Other than the activity outside, I trust your trip and arrival were without incident?”

Dasca gave a brief nod as she moved over and pulled out the chair. There was a tiny whir as she sat down. In a busier space or where others were talking it likely would have faded into the background. “Smooth as a patrol run from Sol to Alpha C,” she said with a grin. It was one of the easiest routes in the heart of the Federation, and one of the safest. Rare did anything of note happen there. “I will say that your handling of the crowd was impressive. How common are such incidents?”

Hyrushi, if he heard the sound, didn’t acknowledge it. “Highly uncommon. In fact, the first of its kind since I have been here.” He steepled his fingers together and said “And unusually rapid in it’s development. We had an attack here a few days ago. Lucas Holloway of Holloway Heavy Industries and the Commanding General of the Colonial Customs and Defense Agency were injured when Mr. Holloway’s shuttle was targeted by a missile attack. And in a matter if a few days, that event has in turn spiraled into ‘spontaneous’ protests here and few other places. And no, I do not believe they are spontaneous. They occurred within minutes of each other and, at least here, there may have been an instigator. The Police Commisioner is investigating.” Hyrushi didn’t mention the Colonial Intelkigence Agency. He was sure the Captain knew of its existence, but it was still a point of contention between Oed and the Federation.

Her mind immediately went to both her command tactical training and her work the last few years as a mediator and diplomat. “Hmmm, so don’t expect answers just yet, got it. But in watching it unfold from a distance I can bet my career on there being an outcome further down the line that someone wants to achieve. What do your instincts tell you about the matter?” Eela shitfed in her seat and almost crossed her legs. How many decades had she sat in seats that way only to have to fight the impulse. One would have thought a few years enough to break the habit but this one was so ingrained she still had to actively still her body from completing the motion. No use straining things further before she had her medical appointment.

Hyrushi shrugged slightly and said “My instincts tell me to let those selected to investigate such matters do just that. Then, when we have more information, plan to address the matter in the best way for the people of Oed V. Reacting without comprehension of the situation tends to bring more negative results than positive. And this colony has had enough negative results in the past few years.”

She leaned one arm on the desk and gazed at him intently. She tended to agree with the wait-and-see approach on long-term matters like this. Still, she already anticipated a contingent of people who would be quietly prepared for anything. Well, and good. “In your mind, what is the biggest obstacle the colony has been facing or will face, and what sort of vision are you aiming for?”
