Having been escorted up through the tower, Eela was asked to wait a moment outside the Governor’s office and so she patiently took in the surroundings of the corridor. Her office and that of the staff that supported was down one level and she’d visit that right after, but right now it was important for her and the person she was here to support that they got to know each other and established where they stood.

She, of course, had read the file available to her, and so there was a certain uncertainty or perhaps even distrust she would not be surprised at. Hopefully if there was any, it would not interfere with their work. Because personal differences aside, this was no different than running a starship (in her mind): you left your personal crap at ‘home’ so that you and everyone else could focus on what needed to be done.

One of the aides acknowledged Dasca and stepped inside the office. “Governor, Captain Dasca is here to see you.”

Eela heard that and inwardly cringed. She’d really have to get people to stop doing that. Yes, she held the rank, and yes it had its place, but in day-to-day life, she was retired and her using the rank felt wrong.

A low, even voice said “Please show her in.”

The room beyond was spacious and white. Walls of glass from the left of the doorway gave an uninterrupted view of the city as they wrapped around the far corner of the room and then continued on out of sight behind a three-quarters-high wall that extended from the far right corner of the room about three-quarters the length of the room. Set into the wall was a fireplace, in front of which was a large seating area with a low table surrounded by couches and chairs. In the far left corner of the glass walled room was a desk on a raised section of floor. Set at an angle with two chairs before it, the lone occupant of the room seated behind the desk stood up as Dasca entered.

Cory used to tell her she presented an elegant figure, with her tall frame, and sweeping hairstyles. Her haze eyes though were intense: curious, assessing, alert. Everything she had needed both as a psychologist and a captain, and then more recently a diplomat. Her low-heeled boots sounded confident strides, despite the ever-so-slight hesitation in her gait. Her long dark hair was swept up in an elegant twist at the back of her head, emphasizing her long neck. An open tailored jacket in a dark blue complemented wide legged trousers in the same colour, and a loose floral blouse hid her brace as she moved.

The figure appeared human… save for the eyes. Terran Asian features surrounded black eyes, like wet obsidian. Long, jet black hair flowed perfectly straight down the back of the figure halfway to their waist as he stood up. Dressed in a dark gray suit with a dove gray paisley shirt under a deep burgundy vest, the figure stood and smiled. “Captain Dasca… this is a true pleasure. I am Kenzo B’tren-Hyrushi, Governor of the colony. I apologize for the… discussion… in the park. It was unexpected and we are looking into the matter. Please have a seat, won’t you? I .” and he held out a hand to her. “Would you care for tea?”

Her first impression of Hyrushi was that he like things clean and orderly. She would see if that impression held up or not- sometimes these things were simply surface observations. “It’s Eela, and I always enjoy a cup of something hot. Tea is but one and I’d be glad for one.” She lifted her hand but did not grasp his. “And I have no issues shaking hands, and I can shield my mind very well, but in our case, given the way we will work together, I thought I should forewarn you that my telepathy tends to be of the more touch-version and give you the choice to avoid that together if it makes you uncomfortable.” Did she offer this to everyone? No. It wasn’t always practical. But respect and understanding was crucial here.
