Akem leaned back down in the bed and also within the scene he was projecting to her mind. Rest then, he wordlessly projected to her.

Once Lai had drifted off into rest, Akem turned his eyes to Kristina almost as though he were looking to the heart of her through the windows of her own eyes. “We appreciate your help. I don’t know what sort of attention our being here is bringing, but rest assured we do not want any of it....Nor are we going back in any way, shape, or form. If we have to ‘disappear’ then we will. I’m not sure of what assistance you can provide in that regard?” There was nothing accusatory, only concerned questioning.

Drawing closer, Cosgrove sighed. “Maybe. I know people. What did you mean when you said you were being hunted?” She was knee deep in this already, so it didn’t make sense to back out now.

Akem maintained eye contact with her as he spoke. “Where we are from, our abilities make us prime targets for experimentation. People wanted to replicate what Lai and I are able to do, for their own pleasures of course. She and I had been on the run for many years. Couldn’t trust too many people, and we unfortunately did. I’m sure you can understand why it’s hard for us to trust anyone even now, despite understand the difference in circumstances now.” There was perhaps a bit of him that drew closer to her, not in a necessarily romantic sense, but there was openness…and curiosity.

Even as he spoke, Kristina found herself drawing closer to him, her brows knit and a frown slipping onto her face. “I can, yes,” she said. “I’m sorry you’ve not felt safe. That’s a terrible feeling,” she said. And she knew it well herself, though only a couple times. Nonetheless, she felt for them. Her gaze slipped to Lai, asleep and thought about how the woman was able to push her back with clearly her mind. Yes, she could see how those abilities and the other way the woman seemed aware of people might be used to ill.

Looking at Akem again, Kristina sighed. “I can’t do anything about what others have done, nor the attention you’ve already attracted. Simply put, my sister was a big deal here on this colony when she worked here and there are people who knew her well. Hearing that she might be here is news because she left Oed several years ago. It’s why I rushed down here. I wasn’t expecting her to be here, so I was very worried for her.”

Akem sighed. “It seems to me we should spend as little time here as necessary then. I don’t that it’s possible to blend in with the populace of this world or not. Or if we should simply get on a ship and get out of here.” He still kept his eyes on her, drawing closer as well as they spoke. “Do you think any of those would work for us?”

Those were good questions and not ones she had answers to. “I’ve run away before. More than once, actually.” Kristina sighed. “I don’t know what the right answer is for you both, but I do know that there is great power in choosing a path, rather than being forced upon one. This is a weird colony. It gets under your skin. Should you stay? I don’t know. It would be weird, that’s for sure. But you didn’t choose to be here and I’m assuming you can’t just go back, nor do you want to. So stay a bit. See if it works. If it doesn’t?”-she shrugged-“pick a different path.”

Akem put a gentle hand on Kristina’s shoulder. “Thank you,” he said with a genuine smile. “We may see what this world has to offer. You can rest assured, we have no intention of going back.” He gave her a grin and added. “Perhaps it’s not too late to keep folks at bay for a bit. We need to let Lai rest. I would prefer to stay here with her unless you need me?”
