He leaned back and she leaned forward. It was a dance of sorts. She pointed a finger back and forth between herself and Hyrushi, “Ours of course. Or perhaps it is only on my part.” Eryn was immensely curious about a man who would recommend a spy for hire, sight unseen, unmet, and by reputation only. Even with Vonn’s recommendation, if he had given one. And knowing who she really was. Or then again who section wanted people to think she was. Layers upon layers. So how many layers had he managed? Oh yes, she was very curious and cautious of this man. She was done playing games with shadow men and traitors. And no matter what happened here, she still had a much more important objective she would have to return to eventually.Eryn
Hyrushi smiled the half-smile again and said “Curiosity is a luxury I do not have access to a great deal, Ms. Romanov. Not having information can be detrimental, so I try to anticipate what information will be needed as far in advance as I can. So we can simply say that my curiosity about you has been well satiated. Yours about me, however, I would be happy to assist with. What is it you would like to know?” and he steepled his fingers together and watched her, unblinking.
Hyrushi, Gov.
Now that was an outright misdirection. Curiosity was the stock in trade of people with his background. He just preferred to satisfy it before anyone else had time to wonder. Or he was lying to himself, and she instinctively knew Hyrushi would never allow such a thing to happen. “To know zhe measure of zhe man.”
Eryn
“One meter, seventy-seven centimeters. If you came all this way to find out how tall I am, I will very disappointed.” he replied with friendly sarcasm.
Hyrushi, Gov.
Eryn laughed, oh he had sarcastic wit. What a breath of fresh air. “Zhen I shall endeavor not to disappoint.” Time to get to it though, the man kept a busy schedule, and she’d had enough to time to judge the man was worth the mutual respect and directness. The natural Russian accent slipped revealing the dulcet tones of someone raised near the Opal Sea. “You have a reputation for getting what you want, protecting those you see fit, and no love lost for the Federation government.” She shrugged it made no difference to her. “I am told Oed is a good place to settle, especially considering who will be looking for myself and my associate. And that you are the reason why this is a colony to take residence on. Then the perfect job offer seems to fall into our laps, with you having made the recommendation. So that leads me to wonder why. You have satiated your curiosity and evaluated the risk. It has been suggested that perhaps you are playing a game of ‘chicken’ with Star Fleet and the Federation and that my associate and I are bait to tip the scales.” She shrugged, “So I have to ask, what is your goal, Governor? Because Mr James may be our director but you are the man in charge.” Honestly she didn’t care if she was bait, it wouldn’t be the first or the last time, but she wanted to know it. What was so big a gain to risk confrontation with who would be coming for herself and Kodek?
Eryn
Hyrushi leaned forward and locked her with a gaze whose intensity rivaled that of most Cardassian Inquisitors, but with no animosity. “I do not play games. And you are not bait. Mr. James and I are working together to keep this colony safe, its people secure, and the wolves outside the fence. I harbor no illusions that that task requires those willing to do things most would find objectionable. I have no such objections. My goal, as you have asked so politely, is simple. I want to know what is going to happen before it happens. I want to have responses in place to mitigate risk to the people of OED V. And I want to ensure that the peaceful slumber of the millions of people who call this place ‘home’ is actually peaceful. I will tolerate no threats to this place. And I will do whatever it takes to ensure that those who even think about doing harm to us are given pause; time to reflect on if the reward for whatever they are thinking is worth the almost certain rain of terror that will fall upon them for doing so. Does that mean I want Commissioner Karlson having storm-troopers marching through the streets? No, of course not. I simply want the overt threats to know that Star Fleet is there to deal with them… and the covert threats to live in mortal fear of what could happen if they decide to test us. And that, Ms. Romanov, is my goal… and where you and your compatriot come in. I trust Mr. James enough to believe that he will utilize your particular talents in a way that will benefit the colony. So… benefit the colony. That is all I ask. Be pro-active. Be resolute. And in the execution of your duties be nothing short of final. Ensure the good people are well-cared for… and ensure the bad people never sleep peacefully again.” and he leaned back and looked at her.
Hyrushi, Gov.
Eryn didn’t flinch at his gaze. She’d seen the look, more times than she could count. Cardassian, Jem’Hadar, or Romulan or Syndicate. It would take much more to make her flinch. But her respect for him went up another notch. A predatory gleam flashed across her eyes. At one time inducing nightmares was said to be her specialty. She knew that look, she lived and breathed it every day. The dominion occupation was to Betazed everything that Hyrushi didn’t want for Oed. She stared back at him and mused, “In another life time.” What she and Hyrushi could have accomplished together. T’Jal would break that half Vulcan mask and break in a grin to have someone like Hyrushi as a contact. “I would do that without asking.” It didn’t matter to her where people lived or where they came from, she would protect those that needed it. And right now it seemed Oed V was her charge. She regarded him a moment longer before leaning back slightly. He had a quite the past, and quite the connections, so it led her to one question. “Why Oed?” What or who or why led him here?
Eryn
Without pause or thought Hyrushi replied “Why not Oed? Is anyone here less deserving of a peaceful life than anyone else? Does the remoteness of the planet mean the people deserve less? No, they are not and no it does not. The rule of life is the rule of the family… when someone is down you help them up. It is that simple.” His voice was firm without being hostile… resolute without being argumentative. If anyone meant what they said, it was Hyrushi.
Hyrushi, Governor
It was interesting how simple, direct questions were answered in different ways by different people. Where many people would explain what drew them to Oed on a personal but selfish reason. Hyrushi on the other hand provided an all together altruistic reason. She had no doubt he meant every word. It may not be as simple as that but he wasn’t likely to bare his inner thoughts to her. She nodded, family was everything and family was also who you made it. She could respect the man and trust even. But remained to be determined was how that trust played out. She trusted T’Jal to always have her back and she trusted Section to always double cross her. Hyrushi appeared to lean towards the former but he had studied, as had she, human nature and psychology. He could project whatever he wanted her to see. Or perhaps she was too cynical for this life time. “I thank you for your indulgence, Governor.” She stood slowly and gracefully. It really was too bad they were meeting now under such circumstances, or maybe not. A few years ago she was still too rough around the edges to even contemplating mutual help. Ah well, she’d died a lot since then. “I’m sure we will see each other at some point.”
Eryn
Hyrushi rose and gave her a slight bow. “Indeed, Ms. Romanov. I hope you gleaned what you needed from the meeting. Please extend my compliments to your associate as well. And good luck in your endeavors. If I can be of assistance, do not hesitate to break in again. I will try to have tea available next time.”
