The doors to the Governor’s office opened and B’tren-Hyrushi walked out. Dressed in a dark blue suit with a deep burgundy shirt under the jacket, he smiled at Enger. “Miss Enger. A pleasure to see you. Please, come in. Meridith, please send Mr. Holloway in when he arrives. Thank you.” and he stepped to the side to allow the Education Director to step inside his office.

Hyrushi, Governor

Karina stood and smiled with a nod of thanks to Meridith. She stepped inside as Hyrushi waved her through. She moved toward a seat, but didn’t sit. Instead she turned to him, excited to get started and to show him the rough plans she’d put together so far. “Governor Hyrushi, it’s a pleasure to see you so soon. Much has happened in the few days since we’ve talked.”

“Do tell. And please… sit. We have some time until the illustrious Mr. Holloway deigns to grace us with his presence.” Hyrushi’s words were coldly diplomatic. “So what has happened? I hope this is good news.”

Karina walked over and sat down on one of the plush chairs. “Good news over all I believe. Though with some caution.” Karina didn’t even pause in voicing her concern. It was a valid concern and one she felt needed immediate addressing before continuing. “I met Mr. Holloway. Personable enough, his assistant seems very long-suffering. I am concerned however, about using him and his considerable resources to help fund, build, promote, support the new school. The man has been the target of an assassination attempt. He was loathe to discuss the circumstances with me. That is, of course, his choice. But such individuals would not think twice of coming to a colony world such as Oed to make another attempt, especially after making such a public attempt on Earth. Children are an easy target and one that strikes fear into people and makes them easy to…manipulate. I for one am not willing to put other families’ children at risk simply because his name and company are associated with our school.”

“The entire school board has been fired. I am in no rush to replace them, but I will. I found them to be manipulative and…what is the word…plotting, I believe. Using the school to map their own agendas rather than looking out for the well being and education of the young. And the education of the students has suffered for that. Also I have been made an offer by DaiMon Hoka. He has offered to purchase all of our supply needs and even assist with the funding of building the new school. As well as offering to meet all contributions to the staff’s retirement and 401k funds. With nothing in exchange. Very strange for a Ferengi. He has also agreed to participate in the new apprenticeship program we will be implementing. I have several meetings set up with other community leaders this week.”

Hyrushi steepled his fingers and listened intently, allowing the Directors emotions to flow through him. Anticipation, excitement, concern, suspicion, frustration… all was as it should be in one who cared for those in their charge. Hyrushi looked at Enger, obsidian eyes unblinking. “Take away the concern of Holloway’s recent altercation. Things are in place to anticipate and deal with any such attempts, I assure you. And even those systems are being expanded and reinforced. As far as the Ferengi Hoka goes, he and I have an unofficial agreement of mutual aid. I would caution you not to sign anything until one of the Colony Legal analysts has reviewed it, however. I like him… but I don’t trust him. Not completely, anyway. But he does bring a great deal of influence and needed capital to the table. Just track every slip of latinum that comes from him. Due diligence is key.”

Karina wasn’t so sure she was ready to dismiss the threat to Holloway. Her past experiences told her that people who would go after someone like Holloway so publicly would not be hesitant to commit ‘collateral damage’ to get to him, nor would they give up so easily. It ate at her to have to put security measures in place at a school, but it would be necessary. And it wasn’t that Karina didn’t trust Hyrushi, she simply didn’t know him. She knew his reputation and it spoke for itself, but everyone made miscalculations. Karina was not willing to let children be part of those miscalculations.

“I am not able to sign anything with Dai Mon Hoka. All of the finances for the school, supplies, and staff are handled by the colonial government. I am not opposed to working with Ferengi, but it does require....caution and attention to…fine print.” Karina was pretty sure that was the phrase she was looking for.

Hyrushi inclined his head and said “Exactly. I am happy to know we are on the same page, Director. Now… what do you need from me? How can I help you move forward with your plans?”

“Space. This is no small undertaking. Making the educational facilities on the colony somewhere that everyone wants to be does not start at the university level. It starts all the way at the beginning with the very youngest children. We want their time in our schools to be so…mm…magnificent they want to stay here for their university or trade training. We do not want them dreaming of far off places - not yet. Our current facility is barely large enough to acco…to accommodate the number of children enrolled. So we need space and lots of it. Factoring in all the people that Holloway Heavy is bringing in, and your plans to make the entire planet livable we will need a lot of space. You have given me leeway to higher whomever I want. Part of getting those people is incentive. With educators money is a factor, but more importantly it is the facility that drives their decision on where to teach. Facilities that are packed like ta’ladies in a jar will not appeal. We need room and budget to hire enough staff to keep student-teacher ratios down.” She placed a PaDD in the space between them. It was a rough sketch, the architectural and building details rough, but enough to go on. It was a veritable city all dedicated to the schooling facilities on Oed along with auxiliary sites based on specific needs of the educational tract.
