Seamus reached over and picked up the water that had been buried behind the tinctures and ligaments and handed it to her with a smile. “You need to relax. Between the meds and the tinctures, you’ll feel better tomorrow. Hell… you’d have felt better already if you had spent today resting like you were told to.” and he shook his head. “Sometimes you don’t know best. I know… its a shocking revelation. But its true. Now drink your water, take off your… my… shirt, and I’ll rub something on your stomach to help ease the inflammation.”Seamus
Ragna pushed herself up carefully so she could drink the water. She handed the now empty cup back to him and gently pulled the hem of the shirt up one side and then shifting the other. While she worked to get the shirt off without making her self wince she..rambled at him. It wasn’t really rambling but she was not ranting at him. “You know what, I was resting until you and my mother decided I needed to get cleaned up. And then got left in a chair to yak at whoever happened by with all kinds of things to say about what happened. I told you, when you finally came back I was tired and couldn’t sit up anymore. And I rested…slept on that bed you made for me. Which was amazing and we need to do that, often. Then you wake me up because we all need to talk and we get more people sneaking up on us. And he made you go away, like getting to keep my mother was a good substitute for you. But it wasn’t like I was in any position to argue. And I told you after I wanted to go inside and I rested. I think seanmhair was in here the whole time, talking. And I probably need to apologize to her, again, because I have no idea what she was talking about…I fell asleep, again. Only to be woken up by a hyperactive ram in time to see everyone go serious and hide so you can get punched.” She pulled the back of the shirt over her head and laid back down down pulling her arms out of the sleeves. “Yes you did your duty and then some and I’ll not make light of that. But my place is beside you even if I can’t do anything. I don’t like it! I have never in my life felt panic like that…” She stopped herself before saying that was why she never wanted to get involved or be married. It was a moot point and Seamus was worth it to her. “And don’t you go all your shirt on me. I didn’t choose it my mother did and you went along with it.” She looked at him, a good once over in nothing but his kilt. She balled the shirt up and tossed it at him. She wasn’t angry, and the last 36 hours were to serious to call it playful, but that would be the best word. “You put the shirt on and I’ll go topless. Ada doesn’t need more reason to ogle you.”
Seamus laughed and said “She can ogle all she wants, wife. All of me belongs to you and you alone. And you forgot a few things in that timeline of yours. Like trying to get up every time you felt like it. And yelling at me for not letting ya get up. And for trying to grab yer sword and come and stand with me. Honestly, love… it was two Andorians. If I cannae handle that, I’ve no business being Marshall, now do I?” and he chuckled. His eyes fell on her bare chest, and he licked his lips bit didn’t move. He did, however, clear his throat and look away to re focus as she spoke.
She laughed just a little. She was a horrible patient and she knew it. “Aye you do belong to me, but if ya not going to lock the door you can put on a shirt. And I Never said you couldn’t handle it. Only that I wanted to be with you.” A wave of heat spread through her as he stared, and her skin flushed. She tugged at his hand to get him to look back at her and she teasingly asked, “Something wrong....Seamus?”
He looked back at her… then looked back at her… and said “Nae… Ragna… everything is just as it should be.”
She actually laced her hand in his, the Gaelic rolling like a song off her tongue. “Seamus, tha gaol agam ort. Tha fios agam gu bheil e mar dhleastanas ort seasamh eadar an cinneadh agus ge bith dè a dhèanadh cron orra. Tha mi air leth moiteil asad airson sin. Chan eil sin a ’ciallachadh nach cuir e dragh orm fios a bhith agad gum bi thu air do ghoirteachadh. (Seamus, I love you. I know your duty is to stand between the clan and whatever would harm them. I am exceptionally proud of you for that. That doesn’t mean that it doesn’t bother me to know you will get hurt.)” There was more, so much more, but she was rambling like an air headed teenager so she was going to stop, so she could rest.
Ragna
Seamus smiled and said “Ragna… I wasn’t standing for the clan today… I was standing for you.” and he leaned forward and, keeping himself well clear of her sore and mending muscles, kissed her with as much love and desire as he could show.
Seamus
She breathed softly, staring up at him, blue fire meshing with his piercing blue. But this wasn’t anger or attitude, but fire for him. Her voice was soft, indicative of the moment and not her injuries. “I know…Seamus.” Shivers trailed down her spine as her voice caressed his name. “I know.” She kissed him, one hand still holding his and the other over his heart. She melted into it. This she needed. The very real and very solid feel of her husband, rather than the very terrifying memory of that man’s hands on her. She let herself relax, she didn’t strain to reach up to him, try to sit up, or up the ante. She simply existed, letting it consume her and nothing existed except that precise moment.
Ragna
Seamus kissed her for a long time before parting his lips from hers. “Ragna… I love you. But if I lock that door, its nae gonna stop the sounds coming from inside this house. And you’re a loud one and ya make me loud, too. Besides, your uncle and that Devlin fella are going to get a deer and the rest are getting ready for dinner. So unless you promise to be quiet and not get hurt, you and I need to cover ourselves -” and he looked down at her topless form appreciatively, “- before I don’t care what they hear.” and he smiled and laughed.
Seamus
“First of all we won’t be eating for awhile if we’re depending on Devlin and Uncle Oddvar to hunt. My uncle doesn’t move as fast as he used to, so we have time. Second, Kirsten and Ada will be pitching tents out in the woods. Da probably took them to the far reaches of that transporter scrambler to keep an eye out. Da and mum will be leaving soon and that leaves Seanmhair, and I’m pretty sure she already thinks that’s what we are doing.” Ragna grinned at him. “I love you, Seamus, and I’ll promise to be quiet, but not getting hurt all depends on how gentle you are.”
RagnaSeamus nodded and went to the door. Taking down a large wooden plank, he dropped it in place and then went back to the bedside. “Lets not worry about doing things that could raise the volume, lets just try and make you more… at ease.” and he grinned and pulled back the blankets…
A little less than two hours later, Seamus got up and got dressed. The blankets were back up and covering Ragna, as was a fresh shirt of his. He leaned over and kissed her, and then smiled. “My wife…” was all he said for a moment. Then he brushed her sweat-dampened hair back off her forehead and said “I’m gonna go see how bad this spit set up is.” and he grinned and winked. “You get yourself ready, and I’ll get you a chair made up outside, ok?”
Seamus
Ragna was, as Seamus put it, at ease and so was he. The time, although brief, had put them both at ease, and let the tension of the last day slip away. She smiled up at him after he kissed her. If he didn’t stop using that tone of voice every time he spoke to her, she was going to get no end of ribbing from the Edman clan. “Get ready for what? I’m supposed to be resting.” She grinned back at him and nodded and sighed tiredly, “Okay.” As he left she very carefully eased herself up and rested supported by the head board. She wiped her face with the damp cloth he left and simply sat waiting for the liniments Seamus applied to soak in while she carefully pinned a clean tartan skirt around her. What took the longest was attempting the brush and braid her hair. Once that was done she dozed off, and that is how Seamus would find her when he returned.
Seamus kissed her cheek and then said “C’mon, love. Let’s see if you can walk a bit. Meds and tinctures shoulda kicked in by now.” and he helped her out of bed and out the door.
Outside every one had been busy. Cuyler had seen the pieces for a large outdoor spit in the leanto for the hay and he and Helka made short work of setting it up, clearing the ground beneath it and ringing the area with stones. Two buckets, one with dirt and the other water, sat nearby, and Helka was slowly building the fire up to a steady blaze that would cook the deer. Oddvar and Devlin were by the river finishing clearing up where they had dressed and spitted the dear. Oddvar, while he worked, was busy telling Tara the most absurd stories he could think of, while Devlin watched on absolutely flabbergasted at the whole thing. Ada had disappeared with the deer skin, and Kirsten was creating small foil packets of vegetables, that Helka had pilfered from the root cellar, and placing them in the coals of the fire. Kirsten had several mess kits broken down and plates, cups, and cutlery were set out, enough for everyone. Helka opened two bottles of mead, carefully poured a packet of spices inside and set them on the outer edge of the coals to warm, and occasionally turning the spit as needed. Helka turned with a smile and nodded as she saw Seamus come out of the house.
Seamus led Ragna over to a small hammock-like chair strung up between two upright supports and let her ease herself into and slowly recline onto the bundled blankets and such set to support her.
Ragna slid back into the chair and then leaned back, the bundled blankets placed exactly where she needed them to stop her from folding into herself from the structure of the hammock. She wasn’t hurting but the short walk was draining. She laid her head back and squeezed Seamus’ hand once she was settled. Aurora appeared from seemingly no where and hopped into the chair and curled up next to Ragna and not on her. She tipped her head curiously at the unknown man again before laying down.
Cuyler was walking back from the shuttle and nodded looking around. He looked up towards the trees where Ada had reappeared. He wasn’t too thrilled with anyone going off alone, but he was certain none of these ‘cousins’ would wander into the woods, but that didn’t mean their hired help wouldn’t. But the girl’s tents weren’t too far and Devlin and Oddvar, strike that, Seamus was on hand. He said a small prayer of thanks to Tyr and any other of the gods that brought Ragna and Seamus together. He slipped an arm around Helka’s waist as she walked over to him, “What did she say?” Helka asked in way of a greeting. Cuyler shook his head, “When everyone gets back.”
The Edmans
Seamus looked around approvingly and said “Its like you all almost know what you’re doing.” and he chuckled and stood next to Ragna.
Seamus
Helka harrumphed with a grin. “Where do you think Ragna learned it all from.” She turned a glare on her youngest daughter, “You haven’t been slacking have you, Ragna?” At the question Kirsten and Ada looked up, looked from Ragna to Seamus and then exchanged a look and snickered. Before Ragna could answer Helka turned a knowing smile on Seamus, “If you can do better, by all means teach me something, Seamus.”
Oddvar, Devlin, and Tara returned and Oddvar chuckled. “Careful Seamus, that’s a trap.” Helka laughed good naturedly, “Good thing you are my husband’s brother, Oddvar, or you’d get into trouble far too often.” Ragna closed her eyes listening to the back and forth banter. It made her miss her sisters…well almost, she’d be getting no end of ribbing and mother hening if they were here.
“Well since we’re all here now,” Cuyler began, “I’ve heard from Revna and Runa.” Ragna opened her eyes staring straight at her father. Cuyler turned to look at Tara. “They’re coming, 28 days, but she has a condition.”
The Edmans
Tara stopped and listened and then said “I would have been surprised if there wasn’t. What condition has she requested?” Seamus looked at Ragna and said very quietly “I’ve really had enough fighting for a few days. Im really hoping this condition isn’t gonna set people off. Please let it be cotton candy. Please let it be cotton candy.”
