Part 1- Well Trained

Nicholas had been trained for years. To the point one might call it programming. When Intelligence or worse Section 31 called for his services, he did it as he was trained. Always.

The afternoon felt like it should have rained, if OED’s orbital station could’ve supported such a thing. Nicholas was seated behind his desk, reviewing files. A call came across. His S31 handler. =/\=You will receive a set of coordinates. go there.=/\= The call ended. Coordinates arrived that were near the remnants of the Romulan Empire. Nicholas gathered his things and left immediately.

Shuttle rides were usually used for planning. But no details had been given. Nicholas had no idea what to expect, but S31 had instructions waiting.

Part 2- Intent

Nicholas’ Shuttle landed on a remote moon. He sighed and stepped outside, immediately greeted by his handler. “Welcome. We have no time to waste.”
“What’s the situation?”
“Prison break.”
“For which they need us?”
“We’re the proprietors of this prison, Operative.”
“Population?”
“Approximately 500. Mostly Romulan, some Klingons and Cardassians as well.”
“Armed?”
“With what they looted from the armory. Mostly standard phaser pistols and rifles. A few grenades have been thrown.”
“My assignment?”
“There’s a central explosive device. Destroys the camp. Control is in the warden’s office. Here are the codes. Once the codes are entered, you will have thirty seconds to exfiltrate. Questions?”
Several. “No sir.”
“Get going.”

Since the establishment of such a branch as Section 31, they had been the secret agency, rumored to do what no one else would. Training boiled down to intimidate or eliminate any obstacle. Now faced with this… Nicholas questioned for the first time in years what his superiors had told him. He tried to shake it loose. There had to be a reason.

As he snuck into the camp, he noticed very few of the prisoners were actually armed. Odd. he watched them sit and tell stories around a campfire. Some of them cried as they recalled a destroyed home.

Nicholas wandered among the prisoners, skulking in the shadows. He listened in as they spoke to each other.

“Are we ever getting out of here?”
“They can’t keep up this siege forever.”
“Why would they want to? They might just destroy us.”
“For what crime?”
“For not dying with our planets.”

Nicholas knew that S31 operated this prison. But were this people held without charge? It didn’t make sense.
