Seamus left before first light to hunt. As the dawn brought light to the stone house, the sheep in the pen ate and bumped against each other as they jockeyed for position at the feed.A shower of blue and gold lights formed into the figure of a tall, raven-haired woman. Grey streaked through the long hair tastefully tied back and hanging in a single long braid down to the middle of her back. Sharp, intense green eyes were set in a faced lined with decades of leadership and worry, but she was still strikingly beautiful. She was dressed in knee-high black leather boots and dark blue pants, with a green button down shirt; all of which was under a fine and expensive-looking long coat trimmed in fur. Sapphire earrings sparkled against her skin.
Angus came running around the corner of the house and then skidded to a halt as the woman looked at him. “Good morning, Angus.” she said softly but somewhat formally. The ram walked up to her and lowered it’s head and the woman scratched at the base of his right horn and his rear left leg rose off the ground shook in pleasure. She smiled and said “I’m going in to see Seamus now. Be a good boy.” and she walked up to the door and opened it and stepped inside as if she owned the place… which, technically… she did.
Seamus McKenzie , The Landlord Is Coming!
Ragna heard the door and laughed, “What did you ‘forget’ this time Seamus? And don’t tell me it was to kiss me good bye. You spent an hour doing that.” Ragna stood with her back to the woman, tall, white blonde hair trailing down her back almost to her knees, brushed but loose, only half dressed, fussing with a tartan skirt that she couldn’t quite get adjusted so it wouldn’t trip her feet. Giving up, for the moment, because there was no point if Seamus was about to ruin her hard work, she folded it carefully and set it in the corner of the neatly made bed. She grabbed an emerald green dress and slipped it over her head, and began cinching the side lacings as she turned around. Eyes falling on the elegant older woman who had just walked into her home. “Hvor i Yggdrasill kom du fra? Og hva i halen til Jörmungandr gjør du her? Angus, din late geit! (Where in Yggdrasill did you come from? And what in Jörmungandr’s tail are you doing here? Angus, you lazy goat!)” Then the shock wore off. Ragna had seen photos of course and she felt even more…unbalanced and thankful she hadn’t said anything worse, though whether the Lady understood or not…and then years of drilling by her Da and Uncle kicked in. “Lady McKenzie, welcome. Would you like some tea?”
Ragna McKenzie, We Need A Lock, the guard Ram is BrokenLady Tara regarded the woman, obviously at home in her grandson’s home… with curiosity and some small amusement. When the woman reacted and then calmed and offered tea; Tara McKenzie, Chieftain of the McKenzie Clan, simply inclined her head and then took a seat at the table. “Perhaps introdcutions would be more prudent. You know me, but I do not know you; although I shall hazard a guess by your level of dress… or lack thereof… that Seamus does, indeed, know you.”
Tara McKenzie, Oh… I Know What You Were Doing
Ragna finished lacing the dress, refusing to be embarrassed. Well she was, but she wouldn’t be ashamed. Seamus was her husband, but perhaps they had been a bit…remiss in their duties to the clans and informing Lady Tara. Now she understood why Revna waited so long to tell them about Mike. There were more important things to be doing.
Ragna executed a perfect curtsey given the Lady’s position and her own as a representative of her own clan. “He knows me quite well I would hope, Lady McKenzie, I’m his wife, Ragna Idun, formally Edman, of Clan Edman. Clan Herald and daughter to Chief Cuyler Edman, and sister to Revna Freya McKenzie. The wife of your Michael Angus McKenzie.” Did she know who Revna was, most certainly, did Ragna state the family connections? Of course that was her job. While she spoke she set several jars of loose leaf tea on the table along with honey and goats milk cream. Then, showing her comfort with the basics of life in such a home, she swung the kettle arm out from the fire, filled two tea cups and returned it to the warmth of the flames.
Ragna McKenzie, Oh yeah, by the way.....“Another Edman?” Lady Tara said with raised eyebrows. “I would wonder what the draw was, but…” and she gestured to Ragna and her obvious hurried dress. “Interesting. So tell me, Ragna Idun formally Edman of Clan Edman Clan Herald and daughter to Chief Cuyler Edman and sister to Revna Freya McKenzie wife of Michael Angus McKenzie…” and she stirred her tea for a moment before lifting it to her lips and saying over the rim, green eyes shining with reflected firelight…
”… did you girls get a group rate or something?” and she sipped her tea, the slightest hint of a smile at the corners of her mouth.
Lady McKenzie, At This Rate We’ll Need A ‘Take A Number For Service’ Machine At The Door
Ragna liked her! She bit back a grin, as she made her own tea. Peppermint ginger, a blend she brought from home, well, her old home. Her head was still tender and sore and the tea helped. She added a heavy dose of the honey, and stirred until the tea was smooth. “Hardly, Lady McKenzie, there would need to be a third McKenzie lad in the mix for that. And as my Dad would tell you, there is no man that will tame our Runa.” Ragna shrugged slightly. “But it seems to be the way of things. History repeats itself. Ah but that does remind me” she got up from the table and retrieved a satchel, and returned to her seat. She pulled out a single envelope with beautiful delicate writing on it. “It’s a copy of course, but was originally hand written.”
To: Tara McKenzie
From: Revna EdmanRagna McKenzie, Finally Delivered
Tara took the envelope and looked at it. She then looked at Ragna and said “Seamus’s wife, are you? Would you mind telling me that particular tale while I see to this correspondence?” and she deftly slid a finger along the seal and popped it open.
Lady Tara
Dear Mrs. McKenzie,
I hope you will forgive the informality of this letter, but I am not writing to you as one clan heir to the head of another. I am writing to you as a woman who loves your grandson dearly. My name is Revna Freya Edman, McKenzie now. I cannot begin to express to you the joy, the peace, and the rightness I feel at taking Mike’s name.I had no idea who Mike was when I met him inboard the Atlantis. I only knew him as the bartender with a knack for keeping the crowds in line and a wicked sense of humor. And a charisma that was impossible to ignore. I love Michael with all my heart and soul. I don’t want his money or his game, I have no need of it, and without it I would still love him.
Our romance is a strange one. I knew from the first date I loved him. And over the months he was first my friend and my confidant. He is a kind, caring, and fiercely loyal person. One day I hope to tell you the story in person. Mike misses you, he says he’s come to terms with the clan politics, but that doesn’t make it easier. Mike has explained to me that correspondence is difficult. Please, if it will help, send him messages through me and my sister. There is a way if we try hard enough together. I hope you and Seamus are well. And please, forgive any insult my ignorance of the situation may have caused.
Revna Freya McKenzieRagna swallowed a large gulp of tea. “Well it actually has to do with that letter, and some other papers I was directed to deliver to you. I called and was directed to the clan Marshal, who promptly told me where I could send myself and my papers and hung up on me. After a week of trying to call back and no one taking my call, I showed up at the gate. The gardener told me that you were gone but I could speak to the game Warden. He drove me here. I ended up getting caught in the storm. We,” Ragna took another sip of her tea, “shared a meal, I warmed myself by his fire, and we shared his bed. I wore his colors,” she glanced over the door where Seamus’s claymore and her sword still hung, ” I held his steel in my hands and I gave him my blade.” She didn’t mention being ill. “There was a misunderstanding on my part. I returned to my family. Seamus came and brought me home.”
Ragna McKenzie
Tara read as Ragna spoke. When Ragna finished Tara, still reading (or perhaps re-reading), said “That boy always did prefer the old ways. Can’t say that I fault him for that. Sometimes I think this whole universe would be better off with less technology and more face to face dealings. For instance…” and she gestured to the letter. “I will say I applaud your sister’s decorum. Please extend my thanks when you next speak with her.” and she folded the letter and put it back in the envelope and then tucked that away in her coat.
“Now then, Ragna McKenzie… you will tell me all about yourself, up to and including how you became my grandson’s wife in detail. While I am aware of the old traditions and how they can be interpreted; my dear Seamus is not one to give his heart away freely, nor is one to do so blindly. So tell me about the moment you knew you loved him and knew that he loved you. And be warned… when he returns, I will ask him the same. If the two do not align…” and she sipped her tea, “… well, let us reserve grandmotherly threats for those who need them, shall we? Now… tell me.”
