Ragna grinned, “I promise I won’t bother your ladies. They are all very beautiful.” She stood up and walked towards the door. The garden was spectacular, though it wasn’t her area of expertise, but it was lush and healthy, she could tell that much. She took a steading breath and prayed to the gods this man would help her deliver her letter so she could go HOME, tell Revna it was taken care of, and go back her pet projects. She reached up and knocked on the door.

A weary sister

A shout from inside seemed… familiar… somehow, but it wasn’t easy to place. “Dammit, Angus! I said na visitors, ya dense bag of fleas!” and the door flew open.

There stood a truly massive Scotsman. Flaming red hair and a full red beard framed a truly handsome face with piercing blue eyes. He was well over six feet tall, and well over three hundred pounds… but he was not out of shape. Muscles rippled and flexed under a plain white shirt with a v-neck, and he wore tan pants seemingly made of some kind of leather. A broad brown belt circled his waist on which hung a sheath knife with an antler handle. The man looked down at Ragna…

And whatever he was about to say was lost. His eyes followed her face and hair, and his jaw opened slightly but no words came for several seconds before he managed to utter “Um… hi.” and he couldn’t help himself… he smiled at her. “Cannae help ye, lass? Are ye lost?”

Seamus, Game Warden

Ragna was tall, as far as women went, so it was quite something for her to have to look up at someone. And in the course of lifting her gaze, was that a hand made knife?, she got to take in the entirety of the Scotsman standing before her. Ice blue eyes crashed against piercing blue ones. She licked her lips, an attempt to rectife a mouth that just went dry. Could he help her? She was quite sure he could, and she pushed that thought down, oh no....Was she lost? She sure felt like it. She took a small half step backwards, “Uh…hello.” Oh man she was in trouble. Her Nordic lilt asserted itself strongly, adding a soft utterly feminine quality to her voice.”N…no I’m not lost” get ahold of yourself girl! “The gardener said you were the only one on the estate to talk to…”

Ragna, stunned Herald

The big Scot stammered slightly but said “Oh… uh… yeah? Did he now? Won -… um I wonder… I wonder why…” and he stopped and took a breath. “And what do you need to talk to… me… me about, Ms..? Or is it Mrs.? Not pryin’ or anything mind ye… jus… jus… ya know… so…” and he stopped talking and just tried to not sound like he was having a stroke.

Seamus, Stunned Marshal

Ragna knew, somewhere in the back of her mind, that she was supposed to be careful who she talked to, but really the man had a sense of history didn’t he? And really she was just too stunned to think straight. “Oh…umm....actually…Miss…it’s Miss Ragna.” Oh lords she needed to breathe…why was she there? “The gardener said you were the only authority on hand at the moment. I’ve been trying to deliver this package for a week.” She swallowed hard, what would Runa do? Never mind she knew what Runa would do and she wasn’t going there. “I tried to…to talk to your clan Marshal, but…he’s ignoring me. Which is really rude by the way. But…um…it’s just papers, heraldic papers actually…some historical documents…and…” Oh gods she needed to stop looking at him, she took another half step back, Ragna never backed up. Oh it was justified though, the man was huge and he was breathing in all the good air....”And a … um…personal letter from my sister to Lady McKenzie.” Ragna might look familiar at this point, the facial structure and other physical traits being similar to Revna, and of course as she got worked up over being ignored her voice might start to sound familiar before the lilt returned.
Ragna, Um......

The big Scots face when pale and a hand went to his mouth. “Gods… nae… nae… nae nae nae nae nae… you’re the Edman Herald? You? Oh s&^%…” the man said. Seamus you right daft bas^%#d, what have you done? he thought to himself. He took a breath and said “The Clan Marshal ain’t ignorin’ ya, lass… his comms are busted. And a fore ye ask, I know ‘cause I’m da Clan Marshal! Seamus McKenzie, Miss Ragna… at your service.” and he bowed in a strangely formal and proper fashion… completely in opposition to the house who’s doorway he stood in. “Come inside, Herald Edman. Let’s see these documents, den.”

Seamus McKenzie, Daft Bas^%#d

Oh Gods....they were all out for all the Edman Girls apparently. She’d done something to make them MAD. “Yes I’m the Edman Herald.” She waved to the brooches, the thora pin and the ceremonial sword strapped to her back. A beautiful black steel hand and half b@^%&%# sword, the pommel carved into the shape of the clan crest. Well she’d been wrong about people before....she’d thought the Game Warden would be someone down to earth, instead he was the arrogant a^% that hung up on her. But at the moment he was being very formal and very polite and her Da would never forgive her for botching this whole thing. She executed a very elegant and exactly perfect curtsey. “Marshal McKenzie,” she was supposed to say it was a pleasure or nice to meet him or some inane thing, but she couldn’t do it and be honest. She wasn’t quite sure she believed him about messed up coms. She also wasn’t sure if he was one of the ‘cousins’ Revna had told her to avoid. But he was the clan Marshal so she had to deal with him. “Thank you.” She walked inside, and despite not being sure if she liked the man, she adored the house and was impressed.

Ragna Edman, I’m getting a headache

The house was simple but very comfortable. It was also well kept and clean. A single large room, it had a large stone fireplace on the wall opposite the door, but off-set so wind from the open door didn’t fan the flames or blow embers around. A large bed sat to the left of the fireplace, ingeniously placed so the heated radiated through the wall and kept the sleeper warm. A window was set next to the bed.. A table and chairs, obviously handmade, sat in the middle of the room. To the right, a counter and a sink with a large bucket sitting next to it stood, and a hand pump was set above the sink in front of a window. Freshly washed vegetables sat next to the sink, some having been roughly chopped recently. One single door was set on the wall between the fire and the sink.Over the fire hung a large, black iron pot. Various hides, skins, and dried herbs and such hung all around on pegs and from the wooden rafters a few feet above the Marshal’s head; and though the place was smallish it smelled like… well… home.

It never ceased to amaze Ragna the deep similarities between the architectural culture of the Nordic clans and the Scottish ones. Even the ones that never had a lot of direct contact. But what fascinated her and really brought out the history nerd in her, was the fine details that were so different. The little things that allowed an astute observer to tell if a site was Nordic, Scottish, or both.

“Please, Miss Ragna, have seat and make yourself comfortable. Would you like a drink? I have water, milk, and whiskey. And I was about to prepare dinner, and there will more than enough if you find yourself hungry.” Seamus was being polite and hospitable, as tradition dictated, but there was… something… else.

Seamus McKenzie, Trying To Not Screw Up Again

Ragna was totally comfortable in the space and it showed. The lack of technology, the ‘primitive’ nature of the ‘luxuries’ didn’t phase her. It was like being at home. The house was just smaller, well smaller than her parents home. But her father was the Chief and that meant he needed a bit more room. Obviously comfortable with the blade at her back, because she sat without it getting in her way. She really could use a hard drink at the moment, but her Da would flay her alive if she got drunk. “Water please,” unlike others who night only ask if it was “no trouble” after seeing the pump, Ragna did not. She glanced out the window taking note of the position of the sun....8 miles was a long way to walk without a meal, and he was being polite and Revna would take her task for being unnecessarily offensive. “Thank you, I accept. But not to be rude, I just really want to get this package taken care of.” There was honesty, urgency, and a corresponding something else to her voice.
Ragna Edman, I need to play nice…for a bit

Seamus pumped water into a wooden mug with hand-banded iron around them. He nodded and said “Aye. Well, let me get the stew on and we can discuss business, if that would be ok?” He handed her the mug and said “Fifteen minutes. Just havta brown the meat and put on the vegetables. Then it can cook while we… talk… get to know each other. Clans joined are clans stronger, after all.” He went back to the counter and quickly and deftly chopped cabbage, carrots, onions, turnips, and potatoes. He then pulled the sheath knife from his belt and began cubing meat, the dark iron blade sliding effortlessly through the freshly dressed parts.

“So tell me… Ragna… did my cousin marrying your sister come as much of a surprise to do as it did to us?”
