It had been a bit over a week now since Kaili had arrived on OED V and she felt like she was beginning to slowly settle in. The good thing about having move around a lot over the past several years was that it never took her long to feel comfortable in her new surroundings or to adjust to new circumstances, new people and a new work place. It also meant that she had a list in mind of all the people she wanted to get to know better. Most of them where, of course, the people who worked at the Sacred Heart Hospital. First and foremost her staff and the heads of the other wards. And she had already started with that. Among the other people she wanted to get to know better was the Governor. She wasn’t entirely sure what the protocol was, but she felt like meeting face to face and exchanging more words and the few at his inauguration would be good. So she wrote and sent the following message:

Dear Governor B’tren-Hyrushi,

I’m not sure if you remember me considering how many people you met at your inauguration. I am Dr. Luana Iolani Kaili, the new Chief of Mental Health at the Sacred Heart Hospital. I was thinking that it might be beneficial to get to know each other a bit better. If you feel the same way, maybe we can meet for a work dinner or I could come by your office some time in the near future?

Kenzo was going over the various proposals he was fielding for a new biome development facility when the message came through. He read it for a moment and then thought back to the inauguration. He had indeed met many people that day… and even more in the interim. But he did recall the good doctor and thought to himself Hmm… perhaps I should meet with her. There are some things coming up she may be needed for. so he brought up the comms and sent the following message back:

Doctor,

Thank you for the invitation. While my schedule is quite full, as I am sure you can imagine, I would appreciate the opportunity to meet with you and discuss some upcoming matters that may interest you. I am free this evening, and will be at the Wild Fork Restaurant near the Government Square at seven pm. I hope you can join me on such short notice.

He sent the message and then sent word to Nyx that he would be dining with the new Sacred Heart Director that evening. He logged off the comms and left his office. It had been a long day, and he needed to shower and change before going to eat.

Hyrushi, Gov

When Kaili received the Governor’s reply, she quickly checked her own schedule to make sure she had no pressing appointments before sending a brief reply to confirm that she would join him for dinner at the Wild Fork Restaurant later that day. She then went back to reviewing more files and and adding tasks to sticky notes before placing those on the whiteboard next to her desk. A very old fashioned way of doing things, but she found that it helped her structure her work in the most efficient way.

A couple of hours later she left the hospital and headed to her apartment to freshen up and change. So it was about five minutes to 7 that Kaili arrived in front of the restaurant. Her auburn hair was falling down her back, with only the upper lay on the left pinned back with a silver hair comb in the shape of a butterfly. She was dressed in a simple but elegant navy blue dress in the style of a 1950s tea dress from Earth. Her feet were clad in black ballerina flats.

After briefly checking her reflection in the window of the restaurant, Kaili stepped through the door and headed straight for the waiter who was standing near the entrance to greet people and lead them towards their tables. Smiling warmly she said, “Good evening. I’m meeting Governor B’tren-Hyrushi here at 7 pm. I’m a few minutes early, so he may not be here yet.”

THe host smiled and said “The Governor has arrived already, Doctor. Please follow me.” and he led her through the restaurant and towards the far back of the establishment’s dining area. There, and through a wholly unremarkable door, was a small private dining room. The Governor, dressed in a tasteful dark gray suit with a burgundy shirt and no tie, sat at a table looking at a PaDD. As the door opened, he looked up and his black eyes fixed on the host and the doctor. Standing, he smiled slightly and said “Doctor Kaili. Thank you for coming. Please, do be seated.” and the host pulled out the chair opposite the Governor and helped the Doctor sit.

Kenzo looked at the man and said “A bottle of red wine, please.” and he looked at her and said “If that is acceptable for you, Doctor?”

Hyrushi, Gov.

“It is. Thank you for asking,” Kaili replied with a warm smile as she slid gracefully onto the chair. Her dark eyes lingered on the Governor, maybe a little longer than was strictly polite, as she took in his attire and body language. She herself was sitting straight, but her posture was relaxed. Her legs were crossed at the knees and her hands were folded in her lap.

Once the waiter had left, Kaili added, “And thank you for accepting my invitation to meet and to get to know each other a little better. I appreciate that, Governor.” Tilting her head ever so slightly she continued, “How are you finding OED V so far?”

Flipping the PaDD over so it couldn’t be seen, Kenzo said “Busy. Very busy. But I am hoping the fanfare of my arrival slows soon so I can get some work done.” and he laughed softly. “I actually came to the city two weeks early. I wanted to get a feel for the people and the city without the accompanying filter of my position. It was… interesting… to say the least.”

Hyrushi, Gov.

“I can imaging,” Kaili exclaimed with a gentle laugh. “Being able to be somewhere, get a feel for the place and the people without drawing attention to oneself is always nice. Though not a luxury I’m granted very often unless I use my people’s special abilities,” she added with a small wink. With one eyebrow raised and leaning forward ever so slightly, she asked, “Tell me, what have you found out during those two weeks and what it you find most … interesting?”

Kenzo looked at her a long moment and then said in a manner most blunt “The people have no hope. They don’t hope for… more. The spend their lives under this dome and....” and he shook his head, “… and they don’t hope for better.”
