The last year had been a hard one, between rehab and and the selection process Mooney had been on the go for most of it.

The last few months had been hardest, between travel and waiting here to catch an Oiler out to his new assignment. Inactivity had never his strong suit. But the news of the Merrimack coming into port had put a spring in his stride.

It would still be a few hours until she docked, and began letting off and taking on crew. Mooney busied himself with insuring his gear was transferred from storage, and that he was checked out of transient housing.

It was his intention to be ready to board just after the first wave of personnel on shore leave.

MCPO Mooney.

Several hours later, the ship did dock, and crew began beaming down from the ship. Aboard the ship, Lieutenant Saark had heard that he would be receiving new crew, or at least a new crew member, and he awaited the arrival of the new crew member in his office. Until then, he was working on paper work, and other boring stuff he had to do. Still, he knew why these boring things had to be done.

Saark was a full-blooded Vulcan, and he tended to be quite patient. He’d be sitting there waiting whether it took the new personnel two hours or twenty four to board. He liked to know who he was working with. What kind of people they were. He found it important to know these things, so that he could run his Sickbay with utmost efficiency.

Mooney arrived at the dock side in time to see the first of the crew begin disembarking. Despite being all officers they looked remarkably like any other crew heading out to the bars.

After watching the last of them clear the gangway, Mooney presenter himself to the security officer at the foot of said gangway. Saluting the Ensin , “Hello Sir, I have orders to report to the Merrimack.” Presenting the plastic envelop containing the printed copy of his orders.

The Ensin looked surprised to see the tall, greying non commissioned officer. After a moment to check his orders against the ship’s roster. “ Your good to go Master Chief, welcome to the Merrimack”

“Thank you sir” Mooney said as he retrieved his orders and boarded pushing an anti grave pallet before him.

Making his way up to the med deck he stoped to straitened his uniform before entering the sick bay.

Wondering in to sick bay pushing an a-grave loaded with gear and a single sea bag was due to draw attention, and sure enough he drew a glare from a woman in a nurse’s uniforms “hello ma’m, could you direct me to the CMO, please?”

MCPO Mooney

The nurse pointed him to Lt. Saark’s office. “Right through there.” She said, and then she turned back to whatever it was that she was doing. She didn’t seem too… pleased with Lieutenant Saark the way she said it. The Vulcan tended not to get along too well with several of the nurses and doctors, something he was trying to improve on.

Pushing the pallet to the side and out of the way, Mooney made his way back as directed.

Lieutenant Saark had not had that much time to set up his office, but then again, he hadn’t seen much point in personalizing it, either. The room was a medium size, with a desk in the middle and a chair. There were two chairs on the opposite side of the desk, and to the right, a large bookcase full of medical textbooks, on every known species. Saark’s specialty was new and unknown illnesses of all types, hence his assignment to the Merrimack, and it showed in his choice of books. The walls had a few posters of medical diagrams. Everything was completely orderly, not a pen out of place. Besides that, the office was rather… sterile. There didn’t seem to be a single personal thing. No pictures, or awards, or anything like that.

As the office door was open Mooney simply knocked on the frame and spoke “Do you have a moment sir?”

“I do indeed. Come in.” said Saark, stopping whatever it was he was doing at his desk. A glance would say some kind of paperwork.

Stepping in and coming to attention,” Master Chief Petty Officer Robert Money reporting for duty sir.” Tho at attention he did his best to asses the room and the Lieutenant, Vulcans being rare in the enlisted ranks.

Mooney was a tall man with a sturdy build, his blond, going grey hair cut in a rather severe military cut, but not quite a ‘high and tight’. Dressed in his class B uniform a person seated behind a desk would likely see the black polymer prosthetic hand sticking out from his left sleeve. Blue eyes looked out from under a strong brow and a face that had . seen to much sun.

MCPO Mooney

“At ease, officer,” Saark said, standing from his desk and putting out his hand. “I am Lieutenant Saark. I am the Chief Medical Officer aboard the Merrimack. To be perfectly honest with you, I’ve only been aboard the ship a few weeks.”

Coming to rest, Mooney took the Vulcans offered hand in a firm grip, “Pleased to met you sir.”

Lieutenant Saark was tall, at 6’3’’, but it was about average for a Vulcan. He had rather large, pointy ears, and his skin carried the green tint typical of his species. He had a squarish face, with eyes that carried a no-funny-business sort of look, and a very normal looking nose. He wore a typical Starfleet Officer’s uniform.

He looked Mooney up and down, reminding himself not to form preconceived notions. “Master Chief Petty Officer Mooney, was it? What made you join the Merrimack? Or did you choose it? Even if you did not, what do you most expect from your time in my Sickbay?” He asked, curiously.

~ Lt Saark, CMO

“I didn’t specifically ask for assignment to this ship sir, but It took a lot of work to get selected for the exploratory fleet program, sir.” Mulling over the question of his expectations, a canned answer didn’t seem appropriate. “As to my expectations? I intend to assist you and your staff in caring for the ship’s crew but more specifically to use my training to provide aid in situations where risking a medical officer is inappropriate.” Another pause wile he considered his concerns. “Being the only Non Com, I wander exactly what my relationship with sick bay will be, I was informed that I would likely be the only enlisted man aboard. That eliminates my supervisory duties and the typical role of providing insulation between crew and officers. I would also imagine that the typical dynamic of experienced NCO supporting a less experienced officer would not be needed, or in-fact appreciated.”

Chuckling, “Sometimes, tho having an confident and adviser who doesn’t contribute to your evaluation report is a good thing.”

MCPO Mooney

Saark nodded. “I will always be in charge of you, but I can respect that you may have more experience than me. It would be illogical to turn down your advice simply because you happen to be enlisted. As long as you can follow my orders, it will be most pleasant to have you aboard.” He said. “And help is always appreciated in the Sickbay.” A trace of a smile seemed to appear on the Vulcan’s face, and he said, “I’m sure your relations with the rest of the Sickbay staff may be better than mine. They do not always appreciate my.. manners, much.”

~ Lt Saark, CMO

“I don’t believe fallowing your orders will be a problem, sir” Mooney replied, he fully expected to get left with all the scut work unless the ship was on fire, but that was ok. He considered it to be a small price to pay being among the first non coms serving in the exploratory fleet.
“As to getting along with non Vulcan humanoids, especially in a supervisory position, I might be of assistance now and again sir. Being I have been one all my life.” Mooney suppressed a chuckle, but not the smile. He could see how a Vulcans direct and logical management style might cause some morale problems in the division.
If the Lieutenant was willing he had an idea how to present a logical method that wouldn’t feel contrived but would be “Vulcan” Enough that the crew wouldn’t really notice.

MCPO Mooney

Saark nodded. He did not quite catch the humor in Mooney’s statement, but he guessed that it was meant to be at least slightly… ‘funny’. “I think you will do well here, Mooney. I look forward to working with you, as I’m sure the rest of our staff is, as well.” He said. Lieutenant Saark was usually open to any suggestions.... though he was not afraid to turn down anything he didn’t think made sense.
