USS Merrimack

The Flashback

USS Merrimack NCC- — Fantail Lounge, Deck 6
Stardate 20260624
Lieutenant Junior Grade John Reeves
Chief Security Officer

The Fantail Lounge was one of the quieter corners of the USS Merrimack, tucked away in the aft-most section of Deck 6 where the steady rhythm of the ship’s operations seemed distant. Unlike the larger and more formal Forecastle Lounge, the Fantail offered a more private atmosphere, a place where senior officers could step away from duty without feeling like they were still standing on the bridge. The lighting was softer, the seating more comfortable, and the replicators were programmed with a wider variety of personal preferences rather than standard crew selections.

For most of the crew, it was a place reserved for command staff and visiting dignitaries.

For Lieutenant John Reeves, tonight it was simply a place to be alone.

The glass in his hand had been sitting there longer than he cared to admit. The amber liquid inside moved slightly as the Merrimack adjusted its attitude thrusters, tiny ripples crossing the surface. He had never been one to drink excessively. Security officers did not have that luxury. A clear head was part of the job.

But tonight was different.

Tonight was a date he never forgot.

Reeves leaned back in his chair, staring out through the lounge’s aft viewport. The stars stretched endlessly behind the ship, a reminder of how small one person’s life could be compared to the universe.

And yet, somehow, one person could mean everything.

His fingers tightened slightly around the glass as the memory returned.

Before the uniform. Before the rank. Before Starfleet.

There had been Kayla.

She had been the first person who ever truly understood him. Before he learned tactical formations, security protocols, and the discipline expected of a Starfleet officer, he had learned what it meant to care about someone else. She had been the person who could make him laugh when he thought there was nothing worth smiling about. The person who challenged him when he was stubborn. The person who saw the man beneath the armor he tried so hard to build around himself.

Today would have been their anniversary.

A day that was supposed to be filled with memories they created together.

Instead, it had become a day he carried alone.

The disease had been rare. So rare that even the best doctors had struggled to understand it. It had taken pieces of her away slowly, stealing the future they had imagined together. Reeves remembered sitting beside her during those final days, pretending to be stronger than he felt because he knew she needed him to be.

He remembered promising her he would keep moving forward.

At the time, he did not know what that meant.

Years later, he finally understood.

Moving forward did not mean forgetting.

The lounge around him faded as another memory surfaced.

Kayla sitting beside him under a night sky, teasing him about how seriously he took everything. Telling him that he was always planning for the next problem instead of enjoying the moment he was in. She had been right, though he never admitted it back then.

She had always been better at seeing him than he was at seeing himself.

Reeves looked down at the uniform he wore now. The Starfleet insignia on his chest represented everything he had worked for, everything he had sacrificed, and everything he had become.

Part of him wondered what Kayla would have thought if she could see him now.

Would she have laughed at how formal he looked?

Would she have told him he needed to relax?

Would she have been proud?

The last question was the one that mattered most.

He slowly raised the glass toward the empty seat across from him.

“To you, Kayla.”

His voice was quiet, barely carrying beyond the table.

“Still the best decision I ever made.”

He took a drink and allowed the silence to settle around him.

The universe had continued moving after she was gone. The Federation had expanded. Starfleet had sent ships into places no one had ever seen. He had risen through the ranks and accepted responsibilities that younger John Reeves never would have believed possible.

But some moments never truly left you.

Some people became part of who you were.

The Fantail Lounge remained quiet as the Merrimack continued its journey through the stars. For a few minutes, Lieutenant John Reeves was not a security officer, not a protector, not the person responsible for keeping others safe.

He was simply a man remembering the woman who taught him what it meant to care.

And tomorrow, when duty called again, he would put the uniform back on.

He would stand his post.

He would protect his crew.

He would keep the promise he made all those years ago.

Lieutenant (Junior Grade) John Reeves
