USS Merrimack
Fan Tail Officer’s Lounge- Deck 6
Lieutenant J.G. John Reeves stepped quietly into the officers’ lounge on Deck 6, the fan tail offering one of the finest views aboard the USS Merrimack. Beyond the broad transparent aluminum windows, streaks of starlight flowed past as the ship maintained her steady course through Federation space.
With his shift complete, Reeves carried a mug of fresh coffee to a table overlooking the stern. Security rarely afforded moments of silence, and he had learned to appreciate them when they came.
His PADD rested beside the cup, displaying the latest departmental reports. He reviewed patrol schedules, adjusted watch rotations to ensure every section of the ship remained adequately covered, and noted several junior officers who had performed exceptionally well during recent drills. A few commendations would be submitted before the end of the day.
The lounge remained calm. Conversations drifted quietly between officers enjoying their off-duty hours while others simply watched the stars. Reeves allowed himself a brief smile. A peaceful ship was often the best indication that Security had done its job well.
Still, habit never truly relaxed. His eyes casually surveyed the room, noting entrances, exits, and the demeanor of everyone present without appearing obvious. Years in Starfleet Security had ingrained constant situational awareness into his instincts.
Satisfied that everything was in order, Reeves returned his attention to the PADD. He finalized the duty roster, took another sip of coffee, and leaned back in his chair.
For the moment, there were no emergencies, no security alerts, and no disturbances demanding his attention—only the quiet hum of the Merrimack and the endless stars stretching into infinity.
It was a welcome reminder of why he had joined Starfleet in the first place: to protect those who ventured into the unknown.
