USS Merrimack
Crew Lounge
Lieutenant Junior Grade John Reeves stepped through the doors of the USS Merrimack’s crew lounge, greeted by the low murmur of conversation and the comforting aroma of freshly replicated coffee. The lounge was beginning to fill as Alpha Shift personnel rotated through for breakfast before reporting to their duty stations.
With the remainder of his onboarding still ahead of him, Reeves decided to make good use of the downtime.
He approached the nearest replicator.
“Scrambled eggs, bacon, wheat toast, hash browns… black coffee.”
The familiar shimmer of the replicator resolved into a steaming breakfast. Reeves picked up the tray and scanned the room before selecting a table near one of the large viewport windows.
Outside, stars drifted silently past as the Merrimack maintained her course through Federation space.
Setting the tray down, Reeves removed his PADD from beneath his arm and placed it beside his coffee. The display still contained the day’s schedule: medical examination, departmental orientation, security systems familiarization, and a briefing with the ship’s senior security staff.
A full day.
He picked up his coffee first, taking a measured sip before setting the mug back down.
The coffee was strong—exactly how he preferred it.
Breakfast followed at an unhurried pace. Between bites, Reeves watched crew members enter and leave the lounge. Engineers compared maintenance reports over breakfast. Flight Control officers discussed an upcoming navigation exercise. Science personnel reviewed sensor data on glowing PADDs.
Every ship developed its own rhythm.
The Merrimack was no different.
For Reeves, this was the quiet period before becoming another part of that rhythm. Soon enough, he’d know the corridors by memory, recognize familiar faces in Security, and settle into the routine of watches, drills, inspections, and whatever unexpected situations deep-space service inevitably presented.
Until then, breakfast and observation would suffice.
He reached for another sip of coffee, content to let the life of the ship unfold around him while he waited for the next step in his Starfleet career.
