Cross gave the usual orders ‘’Stock up and be ready .If the need arise we shall take one of the empty cargo bay and turn it into Triage , we have done this many times so I’m sure every one knows the established code of procedure, conduct , behavior and protocol we need to follow ‘’.

Hunter had been checking and re-changing making sure everything was in order , he understood this would be a challenging mission since the ship was heading into the unknown and the last thing he wanted was for sickbay to be caught off guard.

Hunter Dr.

On entering Cross wiped the perspiration on her forehead, Hunter saw her before she had time to go inside her office ‘’Are feeling okay ?’’ he asked concerned ,not knowing why she was perspiring .With a wave of her hand she dismissed it ‘’ Have just gone up and down the ladders ‘’ , the male doctor frowned wondering if this was a sign of the expected confusion once they reached the ship’s destination . ‘’Cross about the Quarantine Protocols , is it wise to establish the bio –containment field for possible prisoners plus separate isolation for energy- based pathogen screening here in sickbay ? Just one mistake and the whole of sickbay would become contaminated ..we have to consider our own injured crew plus medical personnel ‘’.

Cross thought about what Hunter had said ‘’ You have a point there ,maybe it would be wiser to use the empty cargo -bay and get some engineers to construct the bio-contaminated field and isolation for pathogen screening . The rest of the cargo bay would be used for triage , I’ll contact our C.E ‘’.

From the briefing room Cross headed straight to her office calling doctor Hunter and the nursing officer , providing all the information she had.

‘’Kate you shall work with doctor Kim in the cargo bay which has been adapted for the purpose of this mission, there are still many unknowns, so we’re heading into unfamiliar not previously encountered and has not yet been discovered at least by the Federation ‘’her demeanor stayed neutral but inside Cross was terrified .

‘’Hunter , if a team is send down on the planet you’re likely be called ,I’m going to stay in sickbay and handle any injured crew and those you Kate send during the triage ‘’
The CMO gave them each one a Padd , every detail jotted down ‘’ Its what the Admiral told the Captain about the limited specifications he was able to provide which isn’t much ..oh I nearly forgot another Padd for doctor Kim ..any questions? ‘’ Cross asked.

Hunter had continued preparing everything that needed to be done , checking and re-changing to make sure he hadn’t missed anything.

As Cross was making her way to her office Hunter could visible see her worried and tense look ‘’What’s up Cross ?’’ he asked ‘’What’s going on? ‘’ . ‘’This mission its dangerous , if the ship makes it out of the Expanse we’re likely to face resistance from the beings who are patrolling the area and they are armed to their teeth and extremely hostile ‘’.

Hunter said nothing for what could he say ?.

Hunter’s shift was over , he made his way to Cross’s office only to find her crying softly .’‘Cross what’s up?’’ his tone showing a hint of alarm , she quickly wiped the tears away ‘’ Nothing go away ‘’ .

The doctor closed the door and approached the CMO ‘’People don’t cry over nothing ‘’ he replied ‘’ Cross what is it? ‘’ Hunter asked again but Cross shook her head ‘’Hunter please leave there is nothing you or anyone else can do ‘’ pressing the button she opened the door again indicating that she wanted Hunter gone.

As he excited sickbay Hunter had a worried look on his face ,wondering what was wrong with Cross .He flicked open his communicator and took a deep breath =/\= Hunter here…Joe Cross is upset about something maybe you as her husband might get through her ..do you copy? =/\=.

Joe heard the call from Hunter and frowned. Well, this was different. He then reminded Hunter that they were not married and then obtained Miri’s location from Hunter. The entire idea that Hunter had called Joe quite frankly give him the creeps. He made his way down to sickbay slowly thinking that maybe whatever was wrong with her would solve itself by the time he arrived. He went into sick bay and tapped on Mir’s ice cream and asked her. ” Say this isn’t going to be like when I first came on and you tried to kill me is it? I mean if you want some ice cream and a kiss that would be great. Or maybe a kiss and a hug. I just have all sorts of services that don’t involve pain. Hey you in there Miri”

Cross gazed at Joe for a moment then lowered her eyes ,she felt too ashamed to speak about it with anyone let alone the father of her soon to be born son.

‘’I..I..’’ what could she say and how would he feel? ‘’I’m sorry Joe but I cannot help how I feel’’ .
Leaving him with more questions then answers. The only person who would understand was her long time friend Faith but even she had left to pursue her carrier in nursing.

From the way this started out it made Joe want to cringe on the inside. He would sooner just suffer from Cross’s explosions of anger than do be subjected to some strange unknown woman thing that they would not tell you about but were more than capable of crying and leaving you to wonder what you had done. Joe ran through his head. Wha had he done wrong within the last day or so. Had he said anything that might be misunderstood? Had she gotten more angry than usual about him serving her healthy foods? For the likes of him he couldn’t think of anything. ” Miri?” he asked as he risked literally life and limb reaching out to lay his hand on her shoulder. He felt as though her were attempting to scratch a lioness behind the ears.

After initially touching her and not being bitten or anything he patted and rubbed her shoulder asking her.” What’s wrong hon?” It was then he remembered how Hunter had talked to him. He’d actually sounded worried. Joes face went white as he said in a small, frightened voice, Miri, the baby is he all right?”

Cross didn’t raise her face ‘’The baby is fine , I eat the right foods ,have not had on single drop of alcohol and take the vitamins ‘’ then silence .

It might have seem like eternity when she spoke again ‘’Its psychological , I thought this time it would be different ‘’ Cross hid her face with the palms of her hands ‘’ I felt no connection then and neither do I now ‘’.

Joe was confused. Maybe he didn’t hear her properly. Then it came to him that he had heard her. He stood up and taking a few steps back just started laughing. ” Is that all you silly girl? ” He then placed his hand on her shoulder and said, ” Well in this case my dear let me be the doctor. It’s called pre-natal depression. Most like to have been brought on by the loss of the last one. That and a bout of depression because of who the father is. Now get your silly little behind up and go see that worthless Hunter. He can’t figure out your problem, but he may be able to give you something to reax you a wee bit. If he can’t then I’ll make you some soups and teas which will. And don’t worry my darling as soon as you hold little Victor in your arms, you’ll never want to let him go! Especially if he doesn’t look like me! Joe hugged Cross closely then.

Cross realized that Joe had not picked up what she tried to explain .This was not pre-natal depression, she wished it was but it went much deeper then that , her only console was that she would hand him over to his father’s family.

What a fool she was to think that this time it would be different ,perhaps it was for the best that he did not understand.

Joe noticed Cross’s reaction and sighed. He kissed her and then asked her.” What is it Miri? Something is bothering you badly just tell me. Be out with it please, will you?”

Cross spoke in a low voice ‘’You’re going to hate me for this…I..I don’t feel any love for ‘’ she looked at her swollen abdomen ‘’I thought it would be different from the first time but its not ,my only consolation is that your family accepted to raise him up ‘’.

Miriam fell silent then proceeded ‘’ I guess it has to do with my upbringing , as a child she never showed any love , compassion, comfort, support ,empathy, kindness or affection towards me , if it wasn’t for my grandfather ..’’ she tailed off . Maybe Joe would pick up that Cross used the word SHE.

Joe scowled at Cross not bothering to tell her that what she was describing was just the form of depression that he had just spoke of. But then he heard the rest of what she had to say, and he said to her. ” Ah well there you go then. Your Mother was a cold woman and now you’re afraid you are the same? ” Joe took in a long breath before he continued before speaking. ” Okay me I would say that from hearing that that if you have the presence of mind to say such a thing. Or to fear that such a thing might happen. That alone means that you won’t be that way. And I never thought I’d say this but talk to Hunter. I’m sure he knows more about psychiatry than I do. ” Joe looked away for a moment and then returned to look at Cross. He then said nothing but kissed her. ” You just don’t make any rash decisions until you talk to some smart people. Right now, I don’t think it’s making you feel better having me around. And then going against everything he wanted to do he kissed Cross once again and told her. ” I’ll be here for you either way.” And it was then he left her to think.
