“What would you like to do, ssirr?” She asked. So much discussion going on she had gotten a bit lost in it all.

*Get the hell out of here * the doctor thought .

“I think we can return to the miners now,” Glen replied. “We take a copy of their evidence. It will be difficult to tell the miners not to mine in these areas but that’s just tough. Federation Law is clear where there is a prior claim. We’ll pick up the others and return in the shuttle that is coming down.”

Thalos signaled to a couple of his men who packed up the samples back into the crate. Thalis himself moved over to the ancient computer and ejected the data disk and brought it over to the Captain. “My men will escort you out. I will let you investigate this material and speak with the Advisor. If you would like to set up a meeting later, I am open to it but I would request that you be there as a …mediator. Is that possible, Captain?”

“If you mean a meeting with Federation lawyers and lawmakers, then I’d certainly try my best to be there, but as a Starfleet officer, I’m subject to a chain of command and must obey the instructions and directives issued by my superiors,” Captain Glen replied. “I think Commodore Stone would grant it, but such a meeting might take place off-world, probably at Starfleet Headquarters on Earth. Will your people be able to travel to that?”

Thalos blinked, “They would not come here?” He obviously looked taken aback and was obviously very reticent to leave planet.

“I will also try my hardest to arrange for the meeting to be here,” Glen said. “Interstellar relations are complex and the challenges of maintaining peace and cooperation in a vast and diverse galaxy mean that ambassadors and their staff often have to travel to conferences, even if they don’t like leaving their comfort zones. I will let them know that you cannot leave this planet.”

Hunter remained silent , in his opinion Thalos had a point .As to why the Captain had suggested that any meeting would take place on Earth the doctor could not fathom . They might question how much the Captain really wanted to help them or why they should trust him , after all the Federation had to keep in mind the Romulans ....... would they eventually start a war in the near future?.

M’Mera went over to the table where the crate was and then looked toward the rest of the away team. “I will lead, with Sharp at the rear so two of you will need to carry the crate.” The crate was about 3 1/2 feet by about 18 inches wide and having watched it be brought in, it would take two to carry due to its awkward size. There were a lot of samples in there obviously.

‘’Count me in ‘’ Hunter replied as he moved towards the crate ,in the past he was always enthusiastic exploring caves but now the doctor could not wait to get out of there .He reasoned it might be that this was a mission rather then a hobby.

Eros replied, “I guess that leaves me for the other end,” as he started stretching his arms and back. . . .

Glen found that walking with others, was often a subtle form of intimacy. Side by side, words flow more easily, silences are comfortable, and the direction of the conversation may follow the twists of the path. Shared walks have mended friendships, sparked romances, and forged understandings. Even a silent walk with companions can be a powerful bond, a mutual witnessing of the world.

Eros and Hunter started their journey out of the tunnels carrying the crate ,it felt heavy for the doctor ,not the crate that was not much of a problem .His uneasiness came from what was inside and the fact that he could not do anything to help the Aneras ,though he kept his thoughts to himself .

It was a much shorter journey that Captain Glen had expected. Certainly, it had no time for any discussions.

The Aenar that Thalos had assigned them led the Starfleeters out of the compound to the Northeast edge where a large freight elevator/lift was found. It was easily large enough to fit them all. M’Mera was in the lead and after the Aenar opened the lift and then stood back, she moved forward to inspect the lift first. She wasn’t a trained engineer but it looked to be in sound mechanical shape and she could see no dangers, bombs or anything like that. And her nose would have sniffed them out.
The Aenar closest to her thought she was trying to figure out how it worked so he showed her.
M’Mera nodded in thanks before turning to the Captain.
“Looks safe enough, sirr. I can operate it.” She said as she stood by the controls and waited for the rest of the team to enter.

“Then you have my permission,” Glen replied.

Once everyone was onboard, M’Mera activated the lift and it whooshed up in the dimness of the lights that were, fortunately attached to the corners of the lift. It had taken them many hours to get down the tunnels to where the Aenar were but it was only about little over an hour’s ride to the surface. Mind you the lift was moving very fast.

The doctor was not sure if there was anything that could break in the crate ‘’ Let’s keep on holding it ‘’ he told Eros . Seeing the lift moving fast it seemed it had been a wise decision.

Glen had the sensation of being on one of the roller-coaster rides found dotted amongst the hanging gardens of Ekkaia where he had once visited with Antonia. This would be a much quicker return journey; they had needed to stop for a rest on the walk here, but he wondered where the exit would be on the surface. He guessed that it would be some way away from the Miner’s village.

Sharp took out his cell phone and flipped it open =/\= We are coming up at warp speed though have no idea if its near you or somewhere further out.... =/\= the security was about to say some thing else when the unthinkable happened, he dropped his cell phone and saw it tumbling against the caves until he could see it no more ‘’Ops ‘’ Sharp muttered waiting for the Captain or M’Mera to send him packing.

Sharp sec.

OOC: I am new to this era, but are there cell phones? I’m just gathering information.

Lieutenant Junior Grade Elyss Zavey
Junior Science Officer USS Merrimack

OOC: No, we definitely don’t use cell phones. Please void that last post.

(Back at the very end of the 20th Century, they did use flip-up cell phones, like the Motorola StarTAC, that looked remarkably like future 23rd Century Communicators.)

Please re-write what you meant to say, Marthese.

  • Dave

OOC: No, we don’t use telephones of any kind! A Communicator is not a “cell phone” at all. it is a communications device that transmits on subspace frequencies. It doesn’t need a publicly switched telephone network, cellular base stations or communication satellites. It doesn’t use radio waves. Instead it uses some or other handwavium that passes through subspace like a warped ship does. A “cell phone” just wouldn’t work on this planet anyway. What network is it connecting to? And how is it working so far underground anyway (which incidentally Nosferatu is going to have to decide upon because even the actual Communicator had trouble earlier).

This is why your post was voided here and also in the other thread. Rather than argue the unarguable, and moan about your post being deleted, just rewrite your post as I asked the first time.

  • Dave

OOC: Communicator is a good word to use. That’s what they were called.

Eventually the lift began to slow, then halted. As M’Mera stepped out into a short tunnel, she saw a short metal stairway at the end with a hatch in what would be the roof. She signalled Sharp and the Captain that she was going to check it out. She moved cautiously, her ears swivelled and her nose sniffed. But she found no recent scents of anyone using this door. As she reached the stairway she looked up and studied it. It was just a basic metal hatch with a metal crossbar to lock it . So not openable from the outside when locked she reasoned.
She climbed the stairs with two quick leaps on her hinged Caitian legs, which when she jumped it was apparent to see they were not hinged the same way as most humanoids.
She reached up then and lifted off the crossbar and set it down.
“Can one of you come up and help me push this open?”

Hunter put the crate down ‘’Sure ‘’ he replied and with a few steps was next to the COS ‘’Ready when you are ‘’ he told M’Mera ‘’ I hope the opining is wide enough for the crate to go through without damaging anything ‘’ .

The hatch was indeed large enough to go through with the crate, being about 4 ft square give or take. They would have to go through length wise it but it would fit with one above and one below.

The doctor was aware that it held what the Romulans did and the Aenar had trusted them enough to hand over the only proof they had.

Hunter Dr.

Working together with the Doctor’s and M’Mera’s feline strength they were able to push the hatch up and over. They could both see that the hatch was situated in thick jungle. Indeed when they had pushed the hatch open they had had to push through a curtain of vines. There was jungle all around with no sign of the mining settlement or even a designated path. They would need to use tricorders, good thing that the dampening field was gone and they worked now.

Hunter popped his head out and looked around ‘’ It seems like we are in the middle of a jungle ‘’ he said while getting down again ‘’ Lt M’Mera its wise to send one of the security up there to scan the area lest there are some wild beast ready to devour us ....his gaze fell on Sharp.

Hunter Dr.

Sharp noticed the doctor looking at him ,in that moment he wished he was able to make himself disappear . About to tell the doctor why he would not go up himself instead, then thought its better to keep his mouth shut and hoped the COS would volunteer herself .

Sharp sec,

M’Mera gave Hunter a withering glare before climbing out of the hatch, ears and nose working furiously. She only heard, saw and smelled smaller jungle denizens, nothing large at the moment unless you counted the large snakes on some of the branches. “Ssome ssnakess and rreptiless in the treess. Just be awarre of them.” She said as she stepped back from the hatch so the others could climb out.
