Joe had finally gotten the Dragon shut down. He’d thought about trying to get D’Nesh to work a bit longer but had thrown the idea out the window. The girl had worked enough. So, he’d now found himself finally able to keep his promise to Miri to go see her in her quarters. He walked slowly toward her door with a bowl of fruit since he knew she wasn’t taking care of herself. Holding the bowl of fruit in one hand he reached out with the other as a rather evil grin crept across his face and rang the buzzer.

The CMO was on her bed and next to her was an open book , she had meant to start reading where she had left but instead was simple staring ahead thinking . The buzzer made her snap out of her trance . ‘’Enter ‘’ Cross spoke softly knowing it was Joe for there was no one else who would be bothered to came to her quarters.

As the door slid open she looked at him , her eyes fell on the plate full of fruit ‘’Long time no see Joe ‘’ her voice barley a whisper.

Joe, who had entered in a playful mood and with a rakish look on his face was slowed down immediately by the tone of Miri's voice. He cleared his throat and looked at her there lying on the bed. He gained his wits once again and shrugged as he approached her. " Don't I know that!" he said with a laugh. " First it was D'Nesh with someone's furry cat. And she brings it into a place where food is served! I'm not running an animal shelter! And the two fools getting into a fight over cards. And then yelling to me about the rights they have in my place!

Cross took the plate and put it on her lap then looked at Joe while he vented his anger ‘’Bad day at work?’‘she asked popping a piece of orange into her mouth ‘’ At least you where not in that dam shuttle deep into the water, not knowing what would happen next and cease to exist’‘.

Joe sat on the edge of the bed and sat the fruit down on a bedtime table.” I tell you the whole thing makes me want to go to at least one of those guys quarters and scent mark it because I think it’s my right!” Shaking his head then he calmed himself down a bit and laughed saying, ” Some people just don’t know how to behave. “

Joe reached then into the bowl of fruit and plucked a piece of pear with a fork before giving it to Cross, ” At least I have you. My port in any storm. And how was your day Miri?”

She dug her fork into another piece of fruit ‘’For once you brought me something to eat that I like ‘’ she commented ‘’ My day? Oh just an ordinary day,in a shuttle not knowing if it was about to break suddenly and violently into pieces or not .Anyway Joe I was thinking that when the baby is born we would have to at some point hand him over to your family ‘’ Cross paused ‘’ It feels like loosing my baby all over again . Sure I know he’ll be in good hands but I’m wondering if I can do that ..perhaps it was not so wise of me to tell you I wanted a baby’’ the female doctor looked down at her slight bulging stomach as a tear ran down her face .

Well, this was something Joe hadn’t thought about. The entire thought and sentence caught him flatfooted. ” What was he supposed to say? He felt all sorts of things anger, betrayal, confusion and a few things he had no words for. For the longest time he just sat there. Staring at a spot on the wall just over Miri’s shoulder. Finally, he gathered his wits about him took a deep breath and looked Miri in the eyes. ” So, you’re worried about losing the baby? Well now it would be a bit late to think about it I would think. Either way you’ll lose it.”

Cross put the plate away ‘’ I’m sorry to bother you with my thoughts ,after all I have six more months to wrap my head around about handing the baby to your family ‘’.

She lied down on her side ,pressing her body next to Joe and enjoining the warmth , then took his hand and held it close to hers ‘’ Lets have a goodnight sleep and sorry for troubling you but there is no one else I can talk too and besides you are suppose to play the role of a counselor ‘’ there was a hint of humor in her tone .
