Joe had gone down to see Miriam ostensively for a question concerning D’Nesh but as he stood there at her door there were lots of other questions bouncing about in that somewhat different than other people’s mind of his . For Joe he was dressed rather plainly in gray slacks and a black pullover top. He stood there after having rang Miri’s door staring at the ceiling and wondering why she always seemed to take so long answering the door. It was his own personal opinion that she knew who was out here and that perhaps she just took glee in making him stand about in the corridor. Even on occasions like this when he had brought her a tray with two cups, a pot of tea, and a small container of milk and some sesame rings.

‘’Darn!’’ exclaimed Cross who had just come out of the shower.She grabbed her bath robe and went to open the door and as it slid open she came face to face with Joe holding a tray while he would see the CMO’s hair dripping wet .
As she stood by the side to let Joe in, Cross thought he somehow knew exactly at what time to appear to bug her.

As the door opened Joe wasn’t sure whether he should scold Miri for opening the door in such a state of dress or whether he should just enjoy it. Being Joe he did the only thing that Joe could possibly do. His eyebrows shot up almost past his hairline before he got control over himself and walked into Miri’s quarters and sat the try down.

‘’What ? It’s not that I’m naked! ‘’ Cross hissed tying the bathrobe belt more secure.

After setting the tray down Joe looked at Miri and spoke saying, ” My, doctor, I don’t know whether to ask if you need help getting dried off or to ask you to take my blood pressure!” He laughed then before saying,” Of course I’m sure there’s a way to do both and get you fed as well.”

She heard him but did not respond instead brought a towel to dry her hair ,then sat down at the small table opposite him ‘’Tea? At this time? ‘’ still the female doctor took one of the sesame rings .
With the first bite still in her mouth she stopped ‘’ Did you make these yourself? ‘’ she asked suspiciously.

Joe poured himself a cup of tea and sipped at it as Miri pretended to be on the edge of being upset with him. ” Why yes. ” He replied, with the sound of aristocracy in his voice. ” I’ve been told that tea is good no matter what time of day. “Pausing then he asked her,” New evening wear?” Finally, he broke down laughing at his own behavior and answered her saying, ” Yes, I did make them. I looked up the recipe and it didn’t look so hard, and I had most of the ingredients.”

Cross poured herself some tea and sipped it as if she had aristocratic blood running through her veins ,though she did wonder if both of them had a couple of loose screws .

The doctor put down her cup and asked him ‘’Joe what made you join the Federation?’‘.

Joe almost spit out his tea as he heard Miri’s question. He laughed and as he set down his teas said . ” Miri I’m pretty sure I told you that story not too long ago” He paused for a bit and said ,”The quick story is I got into a bit of trouble with the law and my only way out was when my father pulled some strings with a friend he knew in the academy. . My dad then told me in a rather loud tone to go take the entrance exam or find myself another home. My only way out was to get into the academy just to get me out of Chicago.”

Cross smiled ‘’I hope the child won’ be anything like his or her father ‘’ she replied in a humorous manner ,after staying silent drinking her tea Cross looked at Joe ‘’Let me tell you my story ,after graduation I worked for some years in the ER then decided to take a break and see some of the world.One day I found myself at a river and decided to cross it ,the gentle currents caressing my feet,I was half way through when I slipped at first I thought no big deal I’ll swim to the other side of the bank but by this time the current of the river flow became aggressive and faster. Kept going under and surfacing , my body slamming against the rocks I realized how dangerous it was and how merciless nature can be’‘.

‘’My head was slammed against a rock ,my vision started to blur and I thought this is it I’m going to drown,then heard a male voice from the opposite side of the bank calling to hold on to the next rock which I did,he threw a rope told me to wrap it securely around my waist and pulled me out of the river.The next thing I remember was opening my eyes finding myself in a tiny hut laying on some fur ,my head was bandaged and my body full of bruises , anyway the man was a Vulcan,living alone . I noticed that when it got dark he would go outside and look up at the night sky ,curiously I asked him why and he told me he was once a CSO but now retired and the days that followed I would sit next to him as he recounted the adventures or better still his trails and tribulations ‘’ Cross took a pause ‘’That’s how I came to know about the Federation and the academy .His last words where ‘’Go child..live long and prosper ‘’.

Joe silently listened to Miri as she spoke. He paid attention to every little nuance of her speech. Finally, toward the end he began to smile. He reached over to hold her hand
and laughed as he said. ” So, what you’re saying then is that if you had been a better swimmer and if some old Vulcan hadn’t been living in the hills for some reason we would never have met?”

’’ A good swimmer or not the force of the water would bring anyone down and correct had I not met the Vulcan I would never have joined Star Fleet ‘’.

Joe leaned in quickly and gave Miri a quick kiss before he said over his coffee mug with a broad grin on his face . ” Won’t that be a fine story to tell our daughter Brianna then?”

The look in her eyes was quite similar of someone who was contemplating murder ‘’Have I not told you if its a boy you choose the name and if its a girl I would?’‘.
She then changed the subject ‘’So how are you and D’Nesh getting along ?’‘.

Joe sipped his tea , paused and then spoke to Miri saying. ” I don’t know. After that story I’m afraid you might want to name our little Princess to be T something. You know T-Pong or ping or something. ” Joe set his teacup down at the mention of D’Nesh. ” She’s fascinating. ” He replied. She has all the unbound curiosity of a child but the deft mind to pick up on hard instructions and formulate solutions to about any problem given to her. It set me wondering. How fast or slow do Orions age? I mean mind and body and all. I mean her body seems to be a young adult but she behaves like a human child of about ten or eleven.”

‘’Joe you are the biological father not Dr Kim…T.Pong!’’ she exclaimed followed by a litany of words in her native language. The CMO abruptly stopped when he spoke about D’nesh,scrutinizing his every word and non- verbal communication.

‘’Right I’ll give you some information we have about her ‘’ when it was clear that she had his full attention Cross proceeded ‘’ First of all she was a victim of enslavement by a criminal organization but was saved with others by the Federation and they were brought to the station,probably got rid of them by sending the young women to any ship that docked. As you may very well recall Hunter came to take her to sickbay for a medical,the scan showed she was healthy , does not produce pheromones , except for one anomaly . Hunter turned her to the side while Kate was also present and they saw her back full of scars .The few clothes ,that is if they can be called that were peaces of cloth which she wore when made to dance and entertain.Hunter asked the N.O if the other nurses had cloths they could spare for her…that is when you decided to come and take her away from sickbay ,the cloths Kate had collected were given to D’Nesh at the dragon bar ‘’.

‘’From what I have observed is that though a young woman of about twenty one or two, she does act childish for who knows what her upbringing was like and what she has been through.Having said that she seems happy working with you at the bar ,knowing she’s in a place where it felt safe ‘’.

The female doctor was thinking on how to get her message through ‘’So dear, just keep her safe for one day she’ll find someone who will love her for whom she is’’ .

” I didn’t know all that. Wouldn’t have to. All I know is I walked into sickbay and saw the poor child screaming and all frightened. No poor baby needs to put up with that. If I didn’t think that would have frightened her more, I would have poked your doctor in the nose. ” He looked a bit thoughtful for a moment as he finished his drink. ” That’s frightening!” he spoke in reply. ” Imagine hoping to find someplace you can call home and never knowing!”

He looked off to the wall then and back to Miri before he stole a kiss and asked her ,” So what does your doctor say about you these days?

Cross wasn’t sure if he was referring to Hunter so decided to dismiss the question ‘’Actually tomorrow I’m going to have my first ultrasound by Kate, she’s a certified medical sonographer and I’m really looking forward to it ,if you wish to be present I’ll give you a call’’ seeing that they had drank the tea the doctor looked at Joe ‘’Don’t know about you love but right now all I want is to jump in bed and get a goodnight sleep with you alongside me of course ‘’ she finished off with a wink.

The entire couple of sentences seemed to overwhelm Joe. For some reason it had a strange reaction on him. He knew … well had the general information readily available anyway. He knew that he and Miri had slept together and more of course. And he had the information readily available along with all the causes and effects of doing so. That of course being the baby. But it seemed like that up until this moment it had been more like a report that he had been reading concerning someone else.

For there comes a time in these sorts of situations when for some reason a man while happy about things never quite understands them. The information doesn’t quite sink in. Then it hits him. The fact of what he has done. The fact that he is really as much a part of this thing as the woman is. And it’s then that a woman will see her man act in a truly strange fashion. It’s not hard to spot for a ton of bricks has just fallen on him. Joe’s reaction to this simple question was one of those moments.

Joe froze for a moment. And in his mind the moment seemed to turn into days. It was as if time itself was moving on without him. He was frozen, his mind barely able to think. Then it returned reality crashing in on him. Joe did the oddest of all things for a man of his experience and age. His mouth began to move slowly as he tried desperately to answer Cross. Then he could feel the heat on his cheeks as he blushed deeply. He could feel the wetness of a tear at the corner of one eye. He smiled then embarrassed at his behavior. He grabbed Cross in his arms then squeezing her and said only. ” Well you bet I will hon . To all of the above.”

Cross got out of bed ,showered and got dressed,Joe was still sound asleep as she left her quarters. The CMO was on day duty just the perfect timing with no Hunter around. On seeing the N.O Cross made her way towards her ‘’Kate at some point during the day I want an ultra sound ‘’ she said with a hint of excitement in her voice and with good reason to-day was the day the doctor would see her unborn child for the first time.

Joe rolled over in bed, stretched and yawned. He’d heard the shower going but ignored it choosing instead to close his eyes again. One eye came open in a bit as he heard Miri shut the shower off. He heard her moving about in the quarters as if she were in a hurry and then heard her talking to Kate. Cursing to himself he lifted his head and spotted Miri asking her. ” Is that today? Do I have time to go with you?”

Cross rolled her eye ‘’Men!’’ she exclaimed ‘’Just get ready, Kate is waiting ‘’ and she then left her quarters.

Now in sickbay - Cross laid down on the bed as the N.O switched on the 4D ultrasound ‘’ How many weeks? ‘’ Kate asked ‘’Em about 12 weeks’’ she replied . Her heart started racing ,though she so much had waited for this moment the female doctor knew only too well what could go wrong to the unborn child.

‘’Oh Joe I need you’’ she murmured to herself.

Joe had slid from bed with the intention of giving Miri a quick kiss at least, only to see nothing but her backside before his feet even hit the floor. He scratched his head, yawned and said out loud to himself. ” I guess I could consider that a very definite heck yes. ” Joe searched around for his clothing and quickly got dressed. He hadn’t been doing much at the bar the previous day, so he wasn’t smelling particularly ripe yet. All this being said he shrugged and pulled everything together and nearly ran in the direction of sickbay.

He felt the entire thing was a female trap to ensnare him like some poor bunny and place him at the mercy of the trappers. He was just as anxious about the baby as anyone was. but it seemed that when it came to such matters women seemed to sell men short. Miri could have awakened him up after all. But by the time he did get to sickbay he was feeling better again and more like a prospective dad instead of a rodent stuck in a trap. Upon entering he found Miri and either with or against her wishes leaned over to give her a quick kiss on her forehead and a squeeze of her hand. He then turned his attention toward Kate and what she was doing.
