Layanna had only spoke briefly to her Commanding officer since his return to duty, and she wanted to change that This was her first posting as a first officer, and she would be lying if she said she wasn’t terrified. She was used to being over just a single department, and not the whole ship.

She stood outside the Captain’s ready room and took a deep breath, and rang the chime. She took a few deep breaths as she waited.

Captain Glen had just got back from Sickbay, and he had meant to go directly to the Bridge for an update, but first he had needed to dive into his Ready Room and change. The uniform that Nurse Kate Nightingale had given him was neatly pressed, but it wasn’t new, and was a little tight in some places. Glen was beginning to see some middle-aged spread. He changed quickly and had just finished pulling down his shirt when the chime rang. He sat down in his chair and called, “Come!”

When no one appeared, John Glen shouted a little louder, “Please Come in!”

Glen got up from his desk and pulled down his shirt some more. It was still a little tight. He walked over to the door and then kicked the wall at the left hand side of the door, about two foot from the floor. The door immediately swooshed open to reveal his new XO outside.

“I’m sorry about that,” Glen told her. “Do come inside.”
