Cross called everyone to her office ‘’ Since we are relatively quiet I thought its best to prepare sickbay ‘’ she turned to the nursing officer ‘’ You shall be in charge to assemble and organize a team to help with stocking up on provisions from the cargo bay and putting every thing in order ‘’ she stopped momentarily ‘’Kate you have done this many times before so I’ll leave it up to you to organize it’’ .

Now the CMO looked around ‘’I also would take this opportunity to say thanks to each and everyone of you for the way sickbay functioned, everyone of you played a role with excellent results when it came to treat our patients for all of that I’m sincerely grateful’‘.
‘’One last thing if there is anyone who wish to speak to me in private whatever the cause may be please be free to do so ‘’.

Some did take her up on the offer though nothing serious or alarming , just someone who had the habit of taking longer while on their break and some who where not punctual when coming in for their shift
Cross promised them that she’ll make an announcement.

Some time later she came out of her office and saw Hunter engrossed on the computer ‘’What’s up doctor? ‘’ the CMO asked .

‘’Since we’re relatively quiet I’m reading on the latest scientific research on cardiovascular disorders ‘’ he replied with his eyes still glued to the computer screen.

Cross was about to say something when the voice of Lt Mullins was heard over the comm.

“Lt Mullins to all senior staff. We have an emergency staff meeting at 0015. I am sorry to interrupt but the captain has requested we do this prior to a call from Admiral Baker about the Federation Colonial Outreach program. We will be in the captain’s ready room.=/\= .

‘’Here we go again’’ Cross told Hunter ‘’You’re in charge Hunter while I’m gone ‘’ and with that headed to the ready room while wondering why it was called the ready room.

Hunter just nodded without bringing to a halt or pausing and just continued reading about the latest research.

A nurse approached Hunter ‘’Doctor a man has just been brought to sickbay with sever pain in he’s right eye I .....’’ Hunter did not let her finish he quickly made his way towards the crew man who was being added on one of the biobeds. ‘’Help me doctor I have intense left eye pain and a severe headache ‘’ .Knowing it could be the result of different conditions Hunter asked ‘’Any nausea and or vomiting? Disturbance in vision?Blurred vision? ‘’ the patient nodded ‘’Yes..Yes I cannot stand the pain,its excruciating ‘’ he replied.

‘’Lie down and let me have a look ‘’ for if it was what the doctor thought it could be, he knew the patient required immediate medical attention.

Hunter took the medical tricoder scanning both eyes ,as he read the scan the male doctor frowned indicating concentration on his part and without mincing his words told the patient ‘’You have been having symptoms for quite awhile and you ignored them right? .Its acute angle -closure glaucoma ,urgent treatment is required to reduce the build up of fluid that can result in damage to the optic nerve pressure in your eye or else you’ll lose your vision ‘’.

The nurse who was assisting Hunter brought up his medical file and gave the man a shot of painkiller ,Hunter gave a quick look at the file noticing that glaucoma ran in the family and him being of Hispanic origin made him even more at risk.

‘’I’m going with a procedure called a laser peripheral iridotomy. I’ll creates a small hole in your iris using a laser, this allows fluid to flow through the iris and helps to open the drainage angle of the eye and relieves eye pressure’’ the patient just nodded. If Hunter had told him I’m going to pluck your eye out he would have consented.

‘’Nurse prepare him for surgery ‘’ and with those last words the doctor made his way to the theater .

With the surgery done,the patient was still not fully awake from the anesthesia ,Hunter heard him mumbling something incoherently which wasn’t unusual.His vital signs were normal and he left a nurse to keep an eye on him .

The doctor made his way to Cross’s empty office for a cup of coffee ,he did wonder why the CMO had not returned from the briefing ‘’Must be a long briefing ‘’ he mumbled to himself looking a the time .

Kate followed Hunter as he made the coffee ‘’Don’t mind a cup as well ‘’ she yawned and sat down ‘’Oh the patient asked for some water and I left him sleeping like a baby ‘’.

The male doctor put Kate’s cup on the desk while he sat down quietly ,crossing both arms across his chest ‘’Hunter what are you thinking ?’’ the nursing officer asked .He took a sip of his coffee before replying ‘’ Oh,noting really just wondering if they are still alive in the ready room, maybe this is a special kind of mission’‘
the doctor said while trying to stifle a yawn.
