Hunter who had left sickbay came barging back in the CMO’s office closing the door behind him ‘’Cross what’s this about wanting a child with that ..with that man’’ he voice was raised ‘’ He left you twice and now you want his child ,someone you cannot depend on! Have you lost your mind?’’ he slowed down taking a deep breath the doctor continued ‘’The gene you carry have you forgotten ?Do you want to pass it on to your child where a thin veil exist between sanity and insanity’‘Then he went on a rampage .......
‘’Dominant refers to a relationship between two versions of a gene. If one is dominant, the other one must be not dominant. In that case, we call it recessive. A dominant gene, or a dominant version of a gene, is a particular variant of a gene, which for a variety of reasons, expresses itself more strongly all by itself than any other version of the gene which the person is carrying, and, in this case, the recessive. Now, it usually refers to inheritance patterns frequently used in conjunction with a Punnett square where, if an individual has two versions of a gene, and one is observed to frequently be transferred from one generation to another, then it is called dominant. Biochemically, what is going on in this case is that the genetic variation, for a variety of reasons, can either induce a function in a cell, which is either very advantageous or very detrimental, which the other version of the gene can’t cover up or compensate for ‘’Cross who was behind her desk , casually looking at the crazy doctor and in a bemused way replied ‘’You look more handsome when you’re angry doctor ,anyway thanks for the lecture but its a bit too late conception has already occurred’‘.
She opened the door ‘’ Hunter when you left this morning it seemed you were about to drop dead ,so I suggest you swallow a couple of sleeping pills and go to sleep… hopefully for another hundred years or so ‘’.
In truth Cross was aware of passing on the gene ,though now she knew way more about how to handle it then before so was not unduly worried but something inside her was brewing ,the female doctor had told Joe to keep it a secret .So not only did he broke the promise but told the one person that Cross had decided that Hunter would be the last person on the ship to find out.

After a twelve hour sift Cross finally left sickbay heading to her quarters. After showering the doctor started pacing around, she was waiting for Joe to finish his shift in the hope of him coming to her quarters..Cross lost count of how many times she looked at the time .
Cross CMO.
Joe had finished up in the Fantail , grabbed a quick shower in his quarters, and then headed for Miri’s quarters for what he assumed would be a rather more than interesting chit chat at the least. Outside of Miri’s door he straightened. up took a deep breath and buzzed her door.

When the door slid open he would see Cross’s silhouette as there was just a dim night lamp on ,she walked over and hugged him ‘’ You have been working so late lately ‘’ taking him by the hand they both got in bed .She cuddled up to him feeling secured and protected .
‘’ I feel worn out thanks to Hunter and cannot shake what he mentioned earlier ‘’ .Cross CMO.
If Joe had been the heartless person that most people thought him to be he might have said something. Or he might have just gotten out of the bed and hunted down Hunter to give him more than a piece of his mind. Hunter however had his purpose. And perhaps later at some point in time after he had fulfilled that purpose and Joe found him on a station somewhere. The thought caused Joe to smile there in the dark as the thought nearly caused him to forget about Miri for a moment.
As it was though, he was with Miri. As the day had gone by, he had begun to look forward more and more to seeing her. To spending this time together. And then she had told him that they were on their way to parenthood? He had like any normal man gotten that flash of panic for an instant followed by euphoria and then concern. For there were so many concerns. These were the things Joe had learned about coming from a large family. Children didn’t come with instruction manuals. Each one was different. And the really scary part if you thought about it long enough was that it was a parent’s job to take an unformed mind and program it into a decent human being. He had always been fond of hid Granny’s equation. “Two parts love and hugs, one part jailer and the dealer of punishment, and one part teacher, guiding hand and friend.”
But now there this thing was. The mention of Hunter. He felt as though his life were in a loop where no matter where he turned Hunter would always show up somewhere to cause mischief of some sort. As he lay there in bed with Miri there was not one word to be spoken about the pregnancy as he had thought there would be. There was only a mention of Hunter. And despite all the feelings which rushed through him he managed to put them aside for a moment as he asked in a not kindly voice, ” What about the snake?”
Joe Milligan Barman/Counselor.
Cross who was about to doze off opened her eyes wide ‘’Snake? What snake!’’ she sat up and looked around .Had Joe seen a snake in there ,after a moment’s thought the doctor looked at him ‘’Are you referring to Hunter? ‘’.
‘’Joe he is concerned that the baby would have my dominant gene and with good reason, if your parents are going to take care of our child they would need to know ,if its not dominant it could eventually show up in future generations ‘’ she sighed then looked at him ‘’Wait how did he know ? I never mentioned anything and I did tell you to promise me that we shall not tell anyone for now ‘’.
Cross omitted telling Joe that Hunter had told her she had gone insane, not having a sound state of mind… to foolishly be in love with a man who left her twice !.
Cross CMO.
Joe was growing angry now. He rolled away from Miri and looked up as he sighed. “Miri don’t you remember that odd looking little guy that was here and almost put the whole crew in the nearest nuthouse? He said you were okay. Genes are just scaffolding. And only a bit of scaffolding at that. A person is mostly determined by experiences. I mean a kid can be born with eight legs and still be a good person.” He scowled there in the darkness then and spoke saying, “I’ve had quite enough of Hunter for one day. You need to have words with him about how he’s treating my help, or I’ll go to the captain. He threw the girl over his shoulder to take her and get her exam. She was screaming bloody murder. Turning to her then in the dark he said in a tone that sounded a lot like a child who had been promised something and didn’t get it. ” And what was all this about you being pregnant?”
Joe Milligan Barman / Counselor
Cross was shocked by the sudden change in Joe’s demeanor ‘’Forget I said anything and yes I am pregnant, lets try and have a good night’s sleep ‘’ she gave him a quick kiss and closed her eyes but sleep did not come, her thoughts of what he said made Cross realize that Joe knew next to nothing just like the psychiatrist they had onboard .
The CMO was still puzzled how Hunter had found that she and Joe wanted to become parents but what bothered her most was the fact that Joe knew next to nothing about the enhancement of the gene .
:*Guess only Glen does *
She decided to take things day by day after all it was still early days ....finally Cross fell asleep .Cross CMO.
Joe was amazed. No hoopla? No, I love you darling? No, I hope it’s a .. whatever? Just the same stuff about something will be wrong. Why curse the child and wish it ill? Maybe Miri didn’t believe Joe when it came to the amount of loved one could be counted on to get from his family. That and acceptance. They cared not one little bit who you might be. That night when he finally did fall to sleep it was one riddled by nightmares. Most of which where members of the crew were chasing his newborn child.
