It hadn’t taken Joe long to get what things he considered to be important together and get moving. He had turned all the legal things to run the bar over to Ramona James his ‘barman.’ She was smart, intelligent and if anyone decided on causing trouble, she was also proficient in three different types of hand-to-hand combat. He had trusted her before, so he had no qualms about trusting her with his bar forever how long it took for him to make it back if he decided to.

By the time Joe had packed he soon found out that just his important things were more than he had though. As it turned out it was precisely three duffel bags with the third nearly bursting. He lugged the whole thing to the station’s transporter station and showed them his paperwork to board the Merrimac. As he was finding himself in the gut-wrenching throes of being put back together as it were on the Merrimac’s transported pad, he felt as though his back was broken. After finally being whole again he screeched a bit at the realization of how heavy those duffels were.

Joe had to rest a bit before heading to his quarters which blessedly weren’t too far away. Once in his quarters he thought that the best thing to do would be to go to sick bay. He may need some of Miri’s services. He was. sure, that that cursed transporter had done something to his back Although it hadn’t Joe was being a bit vain about admitting that age was catching up to him. He soon got to sickbay and entered the place looking around with a scowl l on his face and a hand holding his back.

The first person to see him was Kate ,she had been down at the station but had to came back in as the nurses were taking it in turns so everyone could have some quality time …it was only fair.

The middle aged woman approached him, a wide smile on her face ‘’ Joe! What a lovely surprise to see you on the ship ‘’ her first thought was that he came to see some old friends but then noticed the wince on his face ‘’Why are you holding your back, are you in pain? ‘’ .

Joe looked around the place and seeing the nearest desk he could lean back against he promptly did so. Leaning back until he half sat on the edge of the desk. It amazed him that people recognized him so easily. His hair once shorn short was now several inches longer, a light brown and had started to go back to semi curly. And then of course there was the salt and pepper goatee.

He looked up as Kate came toward him and smiled broadly for a moment before answering her. ” Ah Katie the angel of mercy and how are you dear?” Joe moved his body one way and another trying to find a better way to stand which was less painful for a moment before he spoke to Kate. “Well Kate. I was transporting over here when that poxy transporter gave me a good swift kick in my back! It’s either that or I’m getting a wee bit old. So yes, I believe it was the transporter.

Kate nodded ‘’ You clearly seem to be in pain, come let me help you to the biobed and fetch a doctor ‘’Just hold on to me ‘’ .The nursing officer helped him to a nearby bed and left to fetch the only doctor available at the time....Hunter.
He probably hurt his back thanks to that twit Cross when she jumped on him.

She found the doctor who was standing at a nearby medicine cupboard with a handful of painkillers in his hand and a glass of water ‘’ Hey be careful those pain killers they are mighty potent ‘’ she might as well have been talking to the wall, Hunter threw them in his mouth and gulped the water ‘’Just leave me alone I have a severe headache,my head feels like its going to explode any minute !’‘.
Kate thought that it would probably will soon enough ‘’Em, doctor we have a patient who came to sickbay complaining of back pain ‘’ the male doctor was in no mood to see any patients ‘’Go and tell doctor Kim instead ‘’ .

Kate was by now visible agitated she knew all too well the relationship or lack of it between Joe and Hunter ‘’ Sorry but doctor’s Kim shift ended and he left ‘’.
Hunter turned to face her ,he was holding his head with a hand on each side ‘’Just my luck ‘’ he picked up a Padd put it under his arm and left to see the patient.
She thought....... that doctors make the worst patients indeed apply .

Hunter saw the man sitting on the bed from behind ,he was still holding the palm on his head rubbing it …as if that could help and walked over to face the patient.
‘’I ‘m doctor Hun.......’’ he abruptly stopped as he realized who the patient was .Never in his wildest dreams or better still nightmares did he anticipate nor contemplated to see the late Cmdr in sickbay .

Joe, after much experimentation on how to lay on the bio bed without feeling shooting waves of flame up his back had finally found himself a decent position in which to lay. He took a long deep breath and nearly fell to sleep just from the absence of pain when he heard someone come into the room. He opened his eyes to see not just Hunter but the look on Hunter’s face. He knew it would cause him pain, but he couldn’t help but to laugh at the look on Hunters’ face. ” Well, be a surgeon’s rusty scalpel. Is that you Doctor Hunter? How’s that head working for you today?”

If looks could kill Joe would have died instantly .Without a word the doctor picked up the medical tricoder and since Kate had already provided some information on the patient’s ailment started scanning .

’’ Its the rhomboid minor muscle which is causing the pain,it usually occur with sprains and strains but will heal with rest and time ‘’ Hunter informed the previous Cmdr ‘’ How bad is the pain from 5 to 10 ? And have you been lifting heavy objects ?’’ Hunter asked, while at the same time wondering why Joe came to the ship’s sickbay instead of going to the one at the station.

Joe, still with a crooked smile on his face despite the pain said, “Yep that’s what I thought. That old rhomboid muscle. That’s right next to the hula muscle, right?” Joe teased Hunter. He paused then listening to Hunter and answered him saying, “Well it mostly depends on which way I’m facing at any given time. I guess the worst it gets would be an eight. So, are there some pain meds or something you can give me? I have to get some things. set up on the fantail, get my own stuff put away and maybe take your boss to dinner if I’m lucky. “

’’ Of course I’ll give you medication for the pain and we have some gel to rub on the effected area.Since you are already on the bed, Kate would be more then willing to massage it..its soothing and will be absorbed through the skin ‘’.

Hunter pulled up a chair closer and sat down ,clearing his throat the doctor asked ‘’ Joe before I decide which medication I should prescribe I need to ask you what was wrong when you left the ship? The Captain had told us you needed treatment that we could not provide …whatever you say will stay absolutely and entirely confidential ‘’.

It was know that both men did not get along but as a doctor he not only took his work seriously but never forgot the oath he had taken …to do no harm.

Joe merely looked at Hunter for a moment. Rubbed his chin, looked back and forth to make sure they were alone before he asked him in a very quiet voice. ” You mean that Miri never told you what it was? I would have thought that she would have told you if no one else !”

Hunter did the same not really knowing why he should do so anyway Now it was not only Joe who rubbed at his chin ‘’ Miri…em I mean Cross ?’’ he asked astounded not to mention confounded with surprise and wonder ,for if the CMO knew what was wrong with the previous Cmdr how come she never told the male doctor.
He shook his head from side to side ‘’To be honest the answer is a definitely NO’’ Hunter replied back now more intrigued then ever and he had every reason to be unaware for Cross pregnancy up until she had been abducted was all but erased from her medical data.

 "Yeah well I could see why Miri wouldn't want to let word slip. I mean to be honest it is a pretty big thing and I'm not too sure how I feel about it yet." Joe said to Hunter.

“I mean Miriam says that this is the first time. ” Joe shrugged his shoulders and finished saying, ” I know I’ve never heard of a male pregnancy but here I am and let me tell you morning sickness is not a good thing!”
