A nurse took the two BIO -Hazard container with the swabs to the science dept,with it was all the information about the Bacteria in the Cmdr’s ear which he got infected with when down on the planet .
Though it was known that only one ear had been infected there was also a swab taken from the other.

Joe had put up with enough finally as he spoke to Kate telling her “Nurse I haven’t heard anyone around here speaking about anything besides what they are seeing in my ear somewhere. If it’s true, I got something in there from the planet then someone needs to let the captain know since he is supposed to lead down a second team.
