He was still silent as he waited for her to recover herself. Only after Cross had calmed down. “Doctor Cross, ” he began. “We all do things in our lives that we later regret. But the fact is that there is nothing we can do about the past. We cannot go back and repair it no matter how much we wish we could. The only thing that the past is good for is to act as a teacher. A list if you will of things not to do again. “.

Looking at the empty glass Miriam shook her head ‘’No.no not this, it will stay with me until the day I die ‘’.

“There is a difference with you though. You are getting an opportunity many never get. A chance to repair part of your past. ” Stanley then developed a quirky little smile. Something not intentional but one that would certainly telegraph to Cross that he already knew the answer to the question before he asked it. ” So have you and Joe made any attempts to reestablish your previous relationship?”

She now looked straight at him and managed a small smile ‘’Our relationship is now different ,yes we both care for each other and knowing there is always a loyal,faithful and genuine person I could lean on is definitely an asset ‘’ Cross put her hands behind her, picked up her hair for no reason at all only to let it fall back again ‘’Mind you he ain’t going to let me get away with murder ‘’.

And now with a honey sweet voice she asked ‘’What about you doctor are you married? Do you have children or a partner? Have you done something in the past that still haunts you to this day?’‘.

Stanley smiled and his eyes danced with mirth as he said to Cross, “You must keep a secret on this one. ” He then comically looked around the room as if someone might be listening. ” I tell everyone I am married.” he started with a mischievous chuckle. But actually, I’m not. We are both professionals and there is little time for something as time consuming as marriage at the moment. So, whenever we can reunite, we are just very good friends.” .

That wasn’t the answer Cross had hoped for ‘’You know what? I take it your answer means ,mind your own business !’’ she replied. Then thought of Hunter he too had no partner,saying he did not want any drama in his life but would not pass a one night stand.Miriam was about to tell Stan about some of the similarities between him and the doctor but only managed to open her mouth before realizing it was best to say nothing at all.

Thinking for some moments Stanley finally said, “As for the other question I have nothing in my life like yours. Most of the things that haunt me are memories of large family dinners! I always had to run off to find a space for myself. Sometimes all those people made me feel very small. ” Stanley smiled at the thought. Between their physical presence and all the hugs and cheek pinching it was daunting for me.”

‘’I suppose you cherish solitude more then anything else ‘’Cross remarked, she stood up and told the psychiatrist that it was time for her to head to sickbay ,were first and foremost make herself a cup of coffee or two from Hunter’s expensive coffee jar.

Stanley laughed and asked Cross, “Really? Are you saying you’re taking poor Doctor Hunter’s expensive coffee?” He shook his head and said to Cross . “You are a character doctor. ” Do feel free to stop by again when your work allows .”

‘’Guess he does not mind…’’ Cross stopped in mid sentence as she thought about the conversation the doctor had with him or better still the lack of it ‘’To be honest Stanley I can’t figure out what’s got inside Hunter’s mind,the last time I spoke to him he seemed distance somehow and its the first time I have seen him act like that, cold and reserved in manner .I hope its not something I have said or done ‘’.

” Do feel free to stop by again when your work allows .”

‘’Sure will’’ Cross replied ‘’Good day Mr Wong’’ and with that she left his quarters.
