[snip + edit in of another orphan post]As for Klingons, anyone who knew Glen or who knew the Merrimack, didn’t need to explain about Klingons. “Klingons killed my first Captain aboard the Yorktown. Klingon assassins also cam e aboard and killed the previous Captain of the Merrimack, Captain Bordeaux,” Glen told them. “I’m not very keen on Klingons either, but any that remain on the planet following the withdrawal are likely to be favourable and agreeable to the independence of native population. We might use them to our advantage.”
Verity had heard about the terrible incident through Starfleet and attended the memorials out of respect.
Joe then waved his hand in dismissal as he said, “And it’s my own opinion that we should leave all this god crap behind. One thing everyone loves is when guests show up with a great present. Considering where they are with technology how great would it be if our engineers made a small portable steel manufacturing facility? I mean considering that the Prime Directive has been removed as an obstacle. And I would also advise that we should send in a scouting team first. Just to make sure we’re not walking into a trap. ” Joe chuckled then as he spoke saying,” And although I hate to say it Doctor Wong might be a good idea. “
Glen considered this idea of a technological present. “Giving natives presents in return for goodwill isn’t a new idea. However, Wal3 is not the Habitat we just left. Sometimes there are problems, usually with the misinterpretation of the present and whether it is a free gift or trade. We’d need to be careful. This ‘god crap’ will not go away just because we wish it to. There have been twenty-five years of Klingons pretending to be ‘Gods’ and painting the Federation as ‘Devils’. I don’t think that can be undone with a gift alone, but it might help.”
Glen continued, “Certainly, we should send a small reconnaissance party first. Doctor Wong… I don’t know about that. He’s not Starfleet, so I can’t trust that he will stay on message. He’s already caused chaos on the Merrimack!”
“I would like to volunteer myself to accompany the recognisance party, so that I can collect data from the natives for analysis.”
“I want to keep the team as small as possible, but I have no objection to that,” Glen replied. “Doctor Cross, I’ll require you or Doctor Hunter for a medical evaluation. Lt. Del Wolf for security. Then possibly Cara Meow and Wong, if we must.”
‘’Captain don’t worry about Lt Lance, once we got back on the ship I operated on him and before taking him to the O.R gave him a medical evaluation ‘’ Cross was not about to operate without first knowing if there was any underlying health problems or illness’‘.
“Good to know! Have Verity and Max got a clean bill of health too? Just to avoid anything like that incident again!” Glen asked her.
Cross glanced at the new CSO ‘’Max yes but Verity not yet Captain, as she boarded the ship and came directly to the conference room ‘’ the chief medical officer replied ‘’Hunter had given Stan a medical and he’s fit, as for Cara I do not know cause she was already on the ship when I came back’‘. the doctor thought for moment ‘’She was with the group when we were on the Habitat and she seemed healthy enough ‘’.
“Well, let’s get a system in place, so that everyone has a medical before they join the ship, or else immediately as soon as they do,” Glen instructed.
The female doctor wondered what could came next, Glen had somehow changed and it appeared that he had a short fuse this past few days Maybe he should be thinking about himself Cross thought but was not about to say anything of the sort.
Joe had listened to the captain and then as was his job began to try to take the captain’s orders and turn them into something solid and real. Something he suspected irritated Glen, but it usually worked out for the best.
Glen wasn’t aware that he had changed, or that he was more irritable, however there were several things that were really bothering him. and they obviously showed outwardly. Firstly, the relapse of the headaches related to the memory of the worm in his head concerned him. He had thought that they had put that episode behind them. Secondly, and rightly or wrongly, he blamed Doctor Wong for causing those headaches, and he was frustrated that Wong was still aboard. Thirdly, it was just being sent on another Klingon mission in general. He could never forgive them for the death of his own former Captain, and the Merrimack crew could never forgive them for the death of former Captain Bordeaux. That made it very hard to be diplomatic and to maintain a good working relationship without potential conflict. Nor did he really see why he should - they were still the enemy - if it hadn’t been for the explosion of Praxis, the former satellite of Qo’noS’, then they would likely still be at war with them. But Glen had been the Merrimack Captain for such a long time now that maybe few of the remaining crew even remembered Captain Bordeaux any longer?
Looking over at Glenn Joe spoke up saying. ” Alright then sir I think before we do anything else we should set out specific goals for our recon team. Are we there to get an eye on a certain place? Are we there to seek out inhabitants to check their attitude towards us? Or maybe to look around for a place for a good base of operations since we may be here awhile? I think that once we know specifically what we want from the recon mission we can make it easier and simpler to for the team going in. “
Glen was shaken out from his musings, “Yes, they sound like good goals. What I meant by a recon team, was simply that I won’t trust the intel until we’ve checked it for ourselves, so I don’t want a big landing party beamed down to initiate diplomatic relations. This isn’t that kind of mission anyway. We could encounter anything from a reluctance to engage with us, right up to a hostile intent to do us harm. It would be better to be prepared first.”
Looking over the data they had the population looked mostly human like, save for having darker skin tones and slightly above human average strength/endurance. All intel showed the Klingons had fully left the system, meaning no ships or personnel were left behind. Intel also showed the Klingons had a soft fist approach to their rule during their time there. On one hand they used the populace hard for mining and other such efforts on the planet. Those who worked hard and towed the line got favorable treatment and status, those who were weak did not and felt the brunt of harsher punishment/encouragement to work harder and such. This over the past 25 years had meant that the society firmly believed that those who were strongest ruled by a divine hand of their face and through the agents of their Gods.
“So then,” Glen said after reading the data, “This Starfleet data seems to say that the natives look almost Human, and that no Klingons remain on the planet at all.” This cheered up Glen immensely. “So, I want us to check this ourselves with scans and a recon, but I think that may be one less problem to deal with. The main problem we will have is how to actually deal with these natives. We can’t appear to be agents of their Gods, yet they will only respect agents of their Gods. I’m open to any suggestions?”
Max walked in very late to the Department Head meeting since he just arrived at the ship. He was hoping to sneak in and not cause any problems. When he walked in, no on was talking much so Max said something, “Sorry for my late arrival, I am new to the ship and was dropping my stuff off. Sorry if I missed much and sorry for interrupting. I am here to listen for now.” He was hoping no one was upset with him.
Lt Mullins
Chief of Engineering“Don’t worry, you didn’t miss anything. We are just discussing how to tackle the latest mission we have been given,” Glen recapped. “I suggest we begin with a small covert landing party that doesn’t make any contact but observes and checks the intelligence we have been provided is correct. I also want as many scans carried out as is feasibly possible. It sounds like this mission has the potential to get violent. My first priority is the safety of this crew, and it is not necessary for us to get involved in any kind of conflict. Indeed, any kind of conflict would be a failure of this mission. So, we do as much virtual and covert monitoring as is possible first.”
Cross raised her hand then blushed and was quick to put it down, the last time she did that was when still in primary school ‘’Captain, may I suggest to the new CSO to get her medical.... doctor Hunter would be in sickbay’’ .
The female doctor did observe that Glen would say something and then jump to something else entirely, besides the last thing she wanted was anything similar like what had happened to Lance.
“Yes, I don’t want to have any more surprises,” Glen replied. “But Cara Meow and Stanley Wong would have had theirs when they first came aboard. You surely can’t be that far behind?”
Verity stood and said, “I guess I should head to sickbay to get my unnecessary medical exam completed....if that is okay with you Captain.”
V. Aphelion, CSO
“Certainly, and it isn’t unnecessary if it discovers something that will later affect the mission,” Glen replied. “Though I get it that no one likes excessive and pointless testing, the last mission demonstrated what happens when there is none.”
“Unless anyone has anything else, I would like to wrap this up,” Glen said. “Joe, would you like to lead this recon party?”
-Glen, CO
Joe who was never a big fan of meetings but who tried hard nonetheless to be at least a bit useful in them had finally drifted off a bit. While he did pay attention anything of importance seemed to be filed away for future access as soon as he stopped thinking about other things. In this particular case he was wondering if the ships replicator might be able to produce a breakfast like the one that was served at Lonnie Cahill’s in his hometown. Even as the captain asked him the question Joe’s stomach began to growl.
Hearing the captain Joe snapped his head up and after only a few tries he did come up with the information he had missed. He cleared his throat embarrassed at drifting off, but he came back rather nicely he thought as he said. Aye sir if you'd like. And with your permission I would like all members of the away team to be armed with the smaller Type-I hand phasers. They're small and can be hidden. And if I may suggest personnel? Since this is just a touch and go mission, I would like to have our COS and one other security person. I'd also enjoy having out new science officer so we can gather a lot of raw data. Later on, we can take larger parties but for now I think that this should be enough unless you think we should add some more sir."Lt.Cmdr. Joe Milligan XO
Cross stood up ‘’Are you suggesting that there is no need for me as a doctor to be a part of the team? ‘’ the doctor asked trying her best to sound calm ‘’If that’s the case I’m going back to Sickbay and just a small suggestion ‘’ Cross went on ‘’How about changing your uniforms and get down in casual cloths. The minute the inhabitants recognize you’re from the Federation, as the Klingon’s made us look diabolical and horrendous...... ‘’the doctor shrugged after all there was simple nothing else to add.
