Joe had finally caught him enough time during his day to stop into the mess hall and grab a bite to eat. When he went inside it looked like most of the people from the night shift were leaving and headed to their cabins for some well-deserved sleep. So even as Joe was placing his order the place was emptying out. It would soon be that quiet time between shifts followed by a flood of other people.

For the time being Joe had the place to himself save for a few people who were working odd hours. Joe got his order and found him a table. He eased himself down into a chair and began to inspect his sandwich. It certainly smelled good. He raised the bread and there it was. A pile of corned beef with Gouda cheese and Russian dressing and the bread? Yes, it was a nice rye. While he would have preferred it with a nice cold beer he had to settle on a cup of steaming coffee. As Joe lifted the sandwich and took a bite he actually cooed. All was right with the world.

Joe would feel a hand on his back and from his side Cross bent down her faces inches from he’s ‘’Ah Cmdr woken up from your slumber? ‘’she asked with a genuine smile on her face .She looked at what he was eating ‘’Yuk what’s that?’’ the doctor popped the question wanting to know.

She only came to grab some sandwiches for lunch and had no intentions of staying there to eat, Cross had to leave for sickbay again.

Joe started a bit at the sudden touch right in the middle of a swallow. He nearly choked, but soon recovered enough to see that it was Miri, and that she didn’t look angry with him. Of course, this this led to him trying his hardest to suppress a big dumb smile to celebrate the fact. It was a brave attempt but one which was futile. For the big dumb grin with just a small bit of restraint crossed his face as he looked at Miri. His eyes though gave him away with an uncharacteristic twinkle at his joy in seeing her.

He recovered then quite quickly and quite well he thought as he replied “Jeez Miri you scared the heck out of me. This is a corned beef sandwich. Nothing like it. I would recommend one if you’ve never had one. And yes, thanks for not waking me up! I’m still sore. ” He smiled then again and looked around the mess hall before he asked her with a crooked smile, “You won’t be needing carried to bed tonight again, will you?”

‘’That was my intention ‘’ she responded back ‘’ Of course I had!’’ Cross exclaimed ‘’Grandpa loved it and it did not cost as much as meat ,he use to say the best corned beef was from Argentina ‘’.

“You won’t be needing carried to bed tonight again, will you?”

‘’Wellllll.....I don’t think it something I shall refuse ‘’ she tried to keep a straight face ‘’But promise me you’ll sleep next to me and not on a chair…deal?’‘.
