Joe had just come from e security office and as he went into sickbay he looked around and not seeing Miriam he walked over to her office door and buzzed it. He stood there looking tired. He had been busy ever since he’d come back from the station. First with of all things hosting the aliens in a question-and-answer session. And he was quite proud of himself that no one was at war now! And now he was checking on the department heads and cleaning up bits and pieces of small irritating problems that just wouldn’t go away.

Cross came from behind ‘’And may I ask why you are buzzing when the door is obviously open’’ she remarked.She always kept it open except when it needed to stay close..like now.
Once the door slid shut the female doctor wrapped her hands around his neck ‘’Where have you been I’ve missed you?’’ she cooed .

Joe’s mouth instantly formed a perfect O , his heart began pounding so loud that he had trouble trying to think, and for once in his life he was at a loss for something snarky to say. At some point during this quiet interval Joe’s hands had somehow instinctually found their way to Miriam’s waist. After some few moments of silence and what to Joe was turning into an eternity Joe’s mouth moved a couple of times before it timidly started to work as he frowned at first as if confused and then asked in the voice of a little boy.” You… you did?”

Cross’s answer came in the form of kiss on his lips ,probably they stood like that for half a minute before she slightly pulled away with a sheepish look … for once lost for words.

Cross Dr.

Joe had to catch his breath, which after a moment he managed to do. “Well,” he managed to get out. “I never thought that would happen again but I’m glad it did.” He then smiled, pulled Cross closer, hugged her and said in an amused voice, “Well on a scale of one to ten I would give that a twelve.” He held her that way for a moment before he cursed and turned her loose. “Well shoot now I have to ruin all that. I have to ask you a couple of questions for a report.” He looked at Cross sheepishly for a moment before asking her. “Will you still like me after I ask you to help me with this report?”

Cross now stood back with her hands behind her back ‘’Affirmative Cmdr’’ she replied back.The doctor had learned years ago that some realities could never coincide or intersect with one another .

Joe stood in front of Miriam for a moment with his brow knitted trying to gather his thoughts together as if they were sheep scattered across a field. He knew that his feelings for Miri were complicated. He knew that he loved her and always to some degree or another. He knew that he blamed himself for all the bad things that had happened to her.

The one thing he hadn’t known. Hadn’t been prepared for was the effect that she could still have on him. The depth of his own feelings. He took a long deep breath and tried his best to screw on his official XO face. As he looked at Miri though the entire thing fell apart as he saw her standing there like that. He simply laughed shook his head and said, “Darn it Miri. ” Finally, he sat on the edge of her desk gingerly and looked across at her and asked, “Okay then here’s the thing, was Del Wolf given a physical when he was boarded and if so, who gave it to him?” Joe then looked disgusted with himself for having to ask Miri those sorts of questions. They might hurt her feelings! But she’d understand. It was his job, right?”

Cross kept her serious composure,she was now speaking to the Cmdr and not Joe ‘’No Sir he did not ,when I asked him about it he said he had just arrived and got into the shuttle with everyone else ‘’.

Cross CMO.

Joe stood there looking at Cross in total disbelief. “So, he just saw everyone getting into the shuttle going to somewhere for a first contact and said what the Heck? Joe asked as he clenched his teeth and took a deep breath. Then a bit of his old Irish Gran came through as he cocked his head and asked Cross. “Was the man Mouldy then?”
Holding his hand up Joe laughed at himself. “Sorry it’s word meaning drunk. Which I’m going to assume he wasn’t.”

Joe shook his head and told Cross, “You know he may have endangered our mission. I mean we showed in someone’s home, one of us immediately falls over sick and we can’t tell them what is wrong with him. I know if I were them, I’d not let us back for fear we’re carrying some sort of plague!”

Joe looked at the wall for a moment, shook his head and said,” I wish the captain were feeling a bit better. I’d tell him I was sick and couldn’t do my job with the department heads. I’ll have to have a word with him then.”

Joe then gave Cross a silly look complete with an accompanying crooked grin as he asked her. “You still like me? I could teach you a couple of Irish words !” he said laughing.

’’ Guess we made it through,I operated on him the pain was caused by a benign tumor near the pituitary gland and it was pressing on a nerve which in turn got inflamed, thus the pain and low grade fever ‘’ Cross explained.

‘’No,no please don’t bother the Captain, he’s not feeling well at the moment and needs to rest ‘’.
‘’Of course I still like you silly ,deal you’ll teach me Irish and I’ll teach you Maltese , it would be fun seeing how difficult it would be for you to pronounce certain words and letters ‘’.

Cross CMO.

“Well, it’s good nothing was too terribly wrong with the lad at least.”” Joe said with a thoughtful look on his face. “Maybe it was all that that impaired his judgement so bad as to make such a first-year academy mistake in the first place. ” Joe scratched his chin and said,” Well all’s well that ends well I suppose. And the captain doesn’t need to be bothered. I’ll just let him have his first big mistake for free. I give everyone a pass occasionally this will be his unless the captain wants to know. And if he does, I forgot to file the report. “

He smiled then and looked at Cross with a wink saying, “I’d have to tell you Miri most of the Irish I know is of the sort you wouldn’t want to be speaking around your mother.” Joe looked at Cross with an expression laced with all sorts of feelings. “I want to tell you Miri. “He began. “I’ve missed you something terrible. And well I think you must know that I like you a bit as well.”

It was as if a dark curtain fell across Miriam’s face ‘’If you had taken me with you back then maybe,just maybe the scenarios would have been different ‘’ but who’s fault was it, perhaps if she had not feel deserted and abandoned by his actions ? The opportunity had risen to finally came clean ‘’Maybe if I had screamed I’m having your baby,the circumstances would have been different…I’m sorry Joe’‘.

Joe laughed then. A good all over laugh from his belly to his eyes, ” And here we are in your office with Hunter or one of those nurses probably lurking about somewhere outside. If you’d like to go for a bit of a walk sometime or take dinner together let me know. Whenever you can make time. I won’t press you too hard. ” Joe then kissed Cross on her cheek lightly and said to her. Right now, I have all these reports to write up. If you want look me up later dear.” Joe then turned and headed out of Dr. Crosses door while he was still in control of his emotions.

The female doctor nodded at his request,now seeing him walk out of her office the first tear welled up.
