Glen still hadn’t made a decision about Franz, the name Sickbay had given to the orphan child. Instead, he wanted to press the Dol on their policy of technological exchange and to try to confirm the technological level of this very unusual and complex society.

Glen asked the Dol, “Why is it that the people of Habitat were willing to exchange food, plants, and whole value energy production items with the Alstaireans, but they didn’t exchanged their superior stasis technology; something which would have made the Alstaireans very much safer in their flimsy spacecraft on their long journey home?”

The end result though was the Alstarians declined the offer saying that our technology being more advanced could have caused problems with their ship they could not realize. In the end in exchange for taking one of our Seed Pod candidates we were asked only to resupply their ship’s energy stores, provide a small computer program upgrade to make their automated piloting system more reliable to get them back to their homeworld. They in turn gave us several cultural and literature pieces from their own culture especially those that reflected how they lived longer lives then we did..” he said.

After another sip of his glass Dol seemed to consider a question of his own, “..Captain Glen, you say your Federation has many members, all with their own cultures and ideas. When a new member joins how does your Federation avoid clashes of choices of say design, fashion, currency, and the like?” he asked.
