Once Bre had left, Glen said to Kord, “We might as well get Dr. Cross here too and give her the good news.”

Kord nodded and tapped his comms.

=^=Doctor Cross to the captain’s ready room please.=^= he said.

=/\=Aye ..Cmdr on my way=/\= Cross replied anything to take a break from the tedious paper work as she made her way to the Captin’s ready room.
She simple rang the chime and waited ,still wondering if she did anything to make Glen furious.

“Do please come in, Dr. Cross,” Glen called to her.

“Don’t look so worried, for a change we aren’t here to bawl you out. Please have a seat. Look! Even Kord is seated today,” Glen attempted at humour.

Cross eye’s widened ‘’You’re not?’’ she had her doubts and shot a glance at Kord…well he was seated which was unusual for him.

“We’ve certainly had our run ins here in the past. However, you have never been afraid to challenge my thinking, nor to tell when something was wrong, or how to fix it. Those are all positives. You have definitely made my job more difficult at times, but when it was required, you get stuck in and complete the task at hand. You haven’t moaned about your extra workload in Sickbay while Noelle’s illness has been deteriorating, and you absolutely have the knowledge of Medicine we require.”

Now the doctor concentrated on what the Captain was saying while wondering what all this was about. A desirable, favorable distinctive characteristics coming from Glen was quite new to her though Cross did her best to keep a closed expression.

Glen toyed with the large wedge-shaped PaDD on the desk in front of him. He then wrote “REALLY” followed by a big question mark with the stylus, holding the PaDD up at an angle so that Kord could see it. He still had time to change his mind.

“How long have you been here, Dr Cross?” asked Glen. “And during that time, do you think you’ve gotten better at your job? What new skills do you think you’ve developed and new responsibilities you’ve taken on. Would you say that you’re helping the Merrimack much more than you did a year ago?” Of course, Glen knew all this already. His reservations had little to do with Miriam’s abilities, but her answers would help him to ignore those reservations because she really was an excellent Doctor.

Cross could not help but think that she was under vigorous cross-examination,though for what reason the doctor could not fathom ‘’Five to six years’’ she answered ‘’Better at my job? Well Captain I have always did by best ,obviously I am more equipped now then when I first joined.In the past 6 yrs I have gained more experience for a particular situation or task and would continue to do so with every passing day......just like everyone else who take their profession seriously ‘’ she replied as a small smile formed at the corner of her mouth.

“You have been doing some really amazing work for the last few months, and you practically saved my life again on the last mission, which makes it at least two times. You have also been trying really hard to follow orders, and not to show insubordination. I can see that, and although it is difficult for me to ignore your previous record, I’m going to go right ahead do just that. I mean to say, I’ve never followed orders either, and if I had, then we’d all probably be dead.”

At this point she lowered her eyes and picked up an imaginary spot ‘’Yes Sir there were instances were I did not follow orders, I do tend to wonder off and explore but with the new CoS I believe those days are over ‘’ this time Cross finished off with a somber tone.

“I really do believe you when you say that, and… well, with Noelle leaving us an’all, Kord and I have been discussing who should be our new CMO…” Glen was stumbling, “and basically, we think it should be you, and that additionally, you finally deserve that promotion to full Lieutenant that you have been waiting for so long to get.”

Her jaw fell open gone was her closed expression ‘’I did?’’ she manage to mumble before realizing the significance of what Glen had just said. Cross stumbled more then the Captain ‘’T..Thank you Sir’’ back at Kord ‘’and Cmdr’’ at this point the doctor had no idea what to say or do ,so decided the best way to tackle it was to ask ‘’Can I go now Captain …there’s a pile of Padds waiting for me in the CMO’s office?’‘.

She stood up ‘’Captain I’m so sorry about Noelle,she did not want me to tell anyone and had a friend doctor treating her.All I could do was take the workload off her back and another thing ,she’s not in pain cause she was born with Congenital insensitivity to pain (CIP), a rare condition in which a person cannot feel and has never felt physical pain. The doctor hoped to bring some comfort with this knowledge to Glen,knowing how much he cared for every crew member under his command.
