Tom tapped the chime and waited for an acknowledgment. Riley wouldn’t remember any personal interactions with him, only what was in notes and recordings taken during past meetings, and he was ready for the awkwardness of Riley’s psionic abilities telling Riley that there was nothing there contrary to the evidence of his own eyes and ears.-Tom
Riley startled at the sound of the chime. It wasn’t a reaction to which he was accustomed. Even when he wasn’t attuned to the people at his door, his mind picked up a faint whisper of consciousness, much like a person could recognize the sound of footsteps before explicitly registering them in his mind.
“Come,” his voice carried across the room and through the door, and he fixed his dark eyes curiously on the entrance to his office.
Dekker, CNS
The door slid open and Tom stepped in.
“Am I here at an inconvenient time Doctor Dekker?” Tom asked politely.
-Tom
Riley took in the man standing before him. He wasn’t unattractive, a bit shorter than Riley was drawn to, but fit and he had an air of reserve and mystery about him that was intriguing. Most of all, Riley was drawn to the fact that he was a blank slate. Only five of his six senses seemed to register the Lieutenant.
“Not at all,” he replied after a momentary pause, gesturing toward the couch in front of Jarvis. “I apologize, I’m usually rather good with names and faces, but I don’t recall that we’ve met.”
Riley took a seat in a chair across from the couch. He’d completed all the boarding evaluations from their last crew intake and there were few enough officers who displayed the pips of his visitor that he’d find one a stranger.
Dekker, CNS
“ThanK you.” Tom said as he sat down.
Tom leaned forward and gave Riley a very serious look.
“This will be hard for you to believe at first, but we’ve been here a few times. You don’t remember me personally, but you should at least remember making some short reports on one Tom Jarvis. Maybe a few conversational transcripts taken during those talks and read later?”
Tom waited to see if that was enough of a reminder for Riley to realize that they have met before, but it would likely still be a bit awkward.
- Tom
“Internal security,” he said, realization dawning. “I remember the Captain telling me about you and how I’d be unable to register memories of our encounters. That had to have been, well a long time ago. That’s a bit disconcerting. Of course, I’ve probably said that before.”
Tom nodded an affirmation.
Riley leaned forward in his chair, his dark eyes studying the man before him, trying to spark some bit of familiarity. It didn’t work.
“I can’t sense you either. You’ve tie a hand behind my back, Lieutenant. Should I pull up those transcripts?”
Dekker, CNS
Tom smiled warmly.
“If you like, I don’t have anything requiring my attention at the moment.”
Tom sat back. He was used to meeting for the first time almost every time.
