Dagen thought for a moment. How to make a ‘long story short’ as he had heard back on Earth. “Traditionally as you know there isn’t usually a lot of chat with the Symbiot around the potential host. The custodians who look after them also have a database of the history of the Symbiot and their hosts and the logged ‘mannerisms’ of the wee beastie - usually from observations from the hosts. That allows for an easier ‘match’ of a Symbiot to a host, in a perfect world of course. Thor bucked the system and insisted that he choose.” He gave a wry smile. “Which is the only reason that I am joined. I had failed later tests and was put out of the program. It created a … stir … amongst the Commission.” His eyes tracked the others in the simulation. “However since then, Thor isn’t a passive participant. He wants to interact and, admittedly, has unique ways of getting is will to be at least considered.”
- Thor, CENiniane’s eyes widened in surprise. “That is quite unheard of… as far as I know. How fascinating. Does that mean that theoretically Thor could right now have a different opinion about me than you?” she asked.
- Niniane Fahr, sciDagen looked down at his drink and swirled it around in the glass. The tinkling of the ice cubes seemed ironic with them surrounded by so much .... ice. His features took on a humored look as he glanced up to Niniane. “Thor has an opinion about everyone. He is the silent partner in the room, always observing. Including me.”
Niniane raised one eyebrow high - higher than should be possible on a human face and gave him a secretive smile. She was well aware of the fact that he hadn’t answered her question and she let him know silently that she was aware of it.
“I’m sure I’ll get the scoop later,” Dagen said with a smile. “He will invariably comment that your complexion is not an attractive grey, but then he says that about most people. Interestingly he finds Cardassians and Jem Hadar more attractive than Trill.”
Dagen looked at Valleea. He could very easily say the same about her. “Long time no see Doctor,” he said. “A little different from Jeffries Tubes though you are ever very creative about your dress.”
Dagen ThorValleea laughed slightly. “Indeed it is!” Her expression shifted slightly and she considered Dagen and then Niniane. she didn’t mind her friend hearing what she had to say to Thor. “And I contacted our mutual acquaintance. For better or worse, a search is beginning.” She still wasn’t sure how she felt about it, but it was clear that it was a monumental thing.”
Ensign Valleea, DoctorHis eyes took her in again and then glanced over to Niniane before flickering back to Valleea. “I too made a call. Took that leap of faith to find out what I have been missing.” His features tightened with some emotion then turned to Niniane. “Family. It has been a long time since I’ve connected with them.” A pause. “Too long.”
“Yes,” Valleea said softly with a nod, glad he’d made the leap too.
Niniane raised both eyebrows and gave Valleea a questioning and curious look.
“You could say we challenged one another to take steps in our relationships outside of here.”
- Dagen, CE“Dagen had a contact that is going to help me track down what happened to Daharren. I need to know, one way or another, or I’ll never move on with my life,” Valleea told Niniane.
Ensign Valleea, DoctorNiniane smiled and looked at her drink nodding. “Well I’m very glad to hear it. There is nothing worse than in-between states, where you can do nothing else than wonder what might have been.... or what could be.” she said.

OOC: Later that evening in another chat:Shalahn smiled and sang “I’d like that.” in her multilayered voice. Then she looked around the room, looking a bit pensive. “So, what do humans do on occasions such as this?” she asked Dagen.
- Shalahn, nurseDagen looked around the room taking in everyone. “This is something that is … needful for humans. They are, as many races are, social creatures and often their work does not allow sufficient integration. Or networking. coming together in these times are means of both celebrating successes, sharing sorrows, getting away from the ‘usual’ to something just different, or just casual chat to get to know one better.” He thought that spoke of the why but not the what. “They share experiences. They bond. Sometimes mate. They may even talk about building a new thing like, oh, a sonic screwdriver or something. It is like … you and I sharing a memory only by a farther lower grade of discourse.” He smiled, bringing up their previous meeting and the intense way of sharing thoughts.
-Dagen, CEShalahn’s large eyes widened shortly in understanding, then she watched the people talking again, laughing. “I see. No wonder they need a whole evening for that if they only use words.” she sang. “How they ever get to the mating part within that time is a miracle to me. I wouldn’t mate with a male whom I don’t know at all, and how can you know somebody after only one evening of using words?” she pondered, her singing voice sinking slightly deeper in thought as she sung the words.

While Dagen didn’t choke on his drink he did come close. He glanced around and remembered many a time in the bars on OP42 and Mars. “You would be surprised at how little … knowledge some people would accept before ah, mating. ” He cleared his throat a little. “What is the usual, ah, courting time for your people?” he inquired. His mind ranged to the sharing of adventures and life moments with Shalahn in what seemed now to be ages ago. He felt himself wanting to rise up and defend his general species where speech was indeed the norm but, ultimately, could not. “Human courting practices can go over years. Many do not go that long. And some no time at all depending on just what they .. wanted.” He smiled and swirled his drink . “The mating part is an attractive conclusion that is on many a mind in any of these events.” He looked up at her to admire the blue hues of her skin and the fine details that were like living tattoos. Seemed to him that that was on her mind as well. No, they weren’t that different it seemed. “How do you communicate with your family in being distant like this? Is it not words? Or can you make a connection even at a distance?”
-Dagen, Eng
OOC: You still need to read the main thread pls, you got applauded there ;)She tried to shrug, but instead wobbled her head around cutely, trying to imitate the human gesture. “The courting time can be very different, so this is very similar. Especially since we’re not limited to one partner at a time, but we mate only ever for one year and renew that bond every year.... or not.
And yes, once I have made a mental bond with somebody once, I can reach that mind from anywhere, no matter how far away. It’s not telepathy, like the Betazoids do. You see the energy that Heleen channel into different things is everywhere… it’s the atoms and particles that make up everything in this universe. And every being, indeed every item has its unique energy signature, that’s something that can be measured by science. When I channel into telepathy, what I really do is to align the energy signatue of my mind and thoughts with those of the person I make the connection with. By the way Vulcan’s do something very similar when they mind-melt. And once the connection is there, it’s like literally speaking the same language so to say and it doesn’t matter where that mind is, because in this universe, everything is one and connected on that level anyhow. ” she sang.

OOC: Egads!
IC:Dagen thought that one year renewal a little odd. It made him feel that it was not unlike having an annual subscription to ‘Engineering Monthly’ and wondering whether to renew or not. He supposed it made one keep on one’s toes. Did that mean that she could chat with any of her previous ‘mates’ at any time from that meld? He took a quick sip of his drink to avoid smiling too much. ‘Mind melt’
“That sounds marvelously intimate,” he said, earnestly. It was. It was more than anything he could imagine. And that was saying something from a joined Trill. As an engineer he could follow the ‘connectivity’ of everything. As a being, he was a little more hesitant, however, but there was an inner excitement about it all. He could communicate with Thor but that was more a physical and electric connection with his own nervous system. “You are amazing,” he said, honestly. He wondered hat would cause them to opt to not renew their subscription. He pondered back to OP42 with Lisa and how they had chosen to, in effect, do the same. He wasn’t so happy about it himself, but she wasn’t wanting to relocate and he needed to move on to rebuild his life. To this day he has wondered if that was the right thing to do. The heart and the mind were still in a battle. “Is this bond something that can happen with non-Heleen,” he asked.
- Dagen , CEThe blue swirls at her temples pulsed a bit in their color depth. Was this a Heleen blush? “Thank you Dagen.” she sang.
“Yes apparently it is. My half sister, she’s the CNS on the USS Athena, she’s bonded now to a Caitian. A big black hairy Caitian, can you imagine that? I haven’t met him yet, but apparently his fur is very comfy and fluffy.” she sang earnestly.
- Shalahn, nurse
He caught himself smiling at her coloration change. The way that her skin and frills swirled and changed color was like staring into an interactive holo-painting. For that it was simply intriguing to see what new pattern might appear. With Shalahn it was extremely personal, and, to some degree, at least to Dagen, erotic in its own. She was like a violet sky with wispy clouds that would form and change and captivate the eyes and imagination.
Speaking of imagination, Dagen let out a small cough and blushed on his own. It likely didn’t look nearly as interesting as hers. “I think I can,” he said quietly; he was not a Caitian but he still was rather ‘bushy’ as his sister Deela had described him many years back. He was coming into his teens and felt that he looked shaggy compared to other boys his age; Deela as a child just called him ‘bushy’. He was having trouble just standing at the moment. “Would you care to dance, Shalahn?” he asked. “Something sedate so I don’t trip over my feet?” He set his glass down and gestured for her to join him.
That would give him a moment or three to think. What on Trill was he doing inquiring about ‘mixed’ mating that sent a thrill through him? Did he want to do this again? Did he want to step into something that would have this ‘annual renewal’ and essentially put his life into chaos each year? He knew he would have this ‘triad’ of conversation at some time between his heart, his head and the slug who always had his two credits to toss into things. The little guy was like a spectator sitting on the edge of his seat just waiting for the next dramatic thing to happen. Or, as Dagen had rendered the metaphor, the slug wearing a toque while sitting atop a ‘snow board’ just waiting for Dagen to give him a push.

OOC: haha, great mind-picShalahn nodded in her wobbly way, imitating the human gesture. Then she laid her hand in his. As their skin made contact, he suddenly became strangely more aware of her. Similar to the holodeck, but there was no telepathic connection. It was more like the empathic talent of a half-betazoid. He felt her excitement and her acute interest in him, and yes, that butterfly feeling was there as well.
- Shalahn, nurse
‘She’s never going to get that right,’ Dagen thought, seeing her head wobble-nod, ‘and,’ he added, ‘in some odd way I hope she never does.’ It wasn’t that he didn’t care that she got ‘right’ but that, in her own way, that was how it was done. And he got it.
Dagen found himself surprised at the kind of connection, but wasn’t averse to it at all. The tingle was there in the contact but it was more emotional than physical, like knowing the look in anothers’ eyes and the feeling that it matched one’s own. “If there was a specific dance style to this music I’m afraid that my attempt will look nothing like it,” he said with a half grin. Lisa had tried to show him some dance steps. As much as he was, or had been, a fair mixed martial artist which required some coordination, dancing eluded him for coordination. “Her excitement was invasive and he felt himself responding to that stimulus, if that was what it was. He himself had his own nervousness, but that was more of his inner pride of looking foolish or stepping on toes. But that said, this was something he wanted to do so when they reached their destination he took a breath and relaxed.
Turning to face Shalahn, he took both her hands and caught her eyes. Thankfully the music, this time, was not upbeat but sedate. He led her in a swaying motion, shuffling back and forth to the music, their arms swaying together in the direction of their shuffle. As he relaxed, Dagen said, “When you like, we’ll do the same but you put your hands on my shoulders.” That thought sent a jolt of excitement through him; he was old enough to not say that much - especially with having three other ‘hosts’’ memories going with him - was new, but for Dagen there were some things that was just .. personal. “Do you have dancing on your world?” he asked. No matter what anyone said, her eyes were hypnotic. Or maybe it was the whiskey. Or both.
