Her grey eyes took Marishka in and nodded, knowing exactly how the other woman appeared to be feeling. She knew the anger all too well. “I’ll have what she’s having,” Valleea told the server.
Taking in the intelligence officer, she was thoughtful, despite her fluctuating emotions. “Well, their loss, right?” she said, trying to keep the bitterness out of her words and not fully succeeding.
Ensign Valleea, Doctor
The young Ensign, serving as waiter, brought over a large tray. It contained several bottles with appropriate serving glasses.
“Good evening Docter, Lieutenant.” the young blonde woman addressed them formally, “I’m not certain what you require so please, better safe than sorry. Choose one and I’ll take the rest away.”
Valleea nodded politely. “Good evening, and thank you.”
Marishka eyed the bottles and the woman before it came to her.
“You’re Mary Smith right? We met the other night when I was having a drink with the Counselor.”
The young woman looked down, her green eyes unable to meet the Lieutenant’s.
“Yes ma’am. I’m that Mary. But my name isn’t Smith, that was a clerical error. My twin brother and I are very happy to have it fixed. I’m Mary Jameson ma’am.” she explained.
Marishka leaned forward and took a tall bottle and read the label carefully.
“This will do just fine. Kitarian brandy is smoother than you would expect. Thank you very much Mary.” she said dismissing the woman politely.
Marishka poured for herself and Valeea.
“You’re right, it is their loss. I’ve gone on to have quite and interesting life. So here’s to family. May they be well… Far away.” she said before taking along drink of the brandy.
-Marishka
Valleea lifted the glass and took a drink, but didn’t echo the toast. There was a part of her that knew it wasn’t that easy to just ignore that she had family out there. In many ways her feelings about Krios Prime and her parents were tied to Daharren, so while that was still up in the air she knew she’d never be content to just move on with her life and let things be. She could understand that Marishka couldn’t go back. Neither could she. But she hated that she felt like she couldn’t if she wanted to.
“It would be easier if I didn’t feel like I left stuff behind. I’m working on it, but there are ties I just can’t sever and it makes it hard to…” Valleea paused and frowned and looked at Marishka. “It’s not been the easiest year for me. Between an event on my cadet cruise and coming hear just before the Genesis was destroyed, I’m not doing as well I could be. Some days it’s a just all a bit too much.” She drank more heavily from her glass.
Ensign Valleea, Doctor
Marishka observed Valleea as she spoke.
“Yes, someof the events that lead me here have probably left their mark on my psyche but I am glad for this place none the less. I don’t think I will be seeing either of my parents or my brother. A lot of times that doesn’t really bother me but, every once in a while, I feel lonely for the type of support and understanding you would think only blood could give you. I’m learning that that’s not the case however.” she explained with a smile.
-Marishka
Valleea matched Marishka’s smile. “So am I. I think I fought it at the Academy, though the approach from others didn’t always feel genuine. I always assumed it was something to do with my being a bit older than most when they started at the Medical Academy, but I’m not so sure now. It’s definitely an experience thing, but on this ship I seem to be surrounded with those who have been through their fair share. It’s… strangely comforting, especially on the more difficult days.” She took a deeper sip of her drink.
