USS Genesis

Unused Holodeck-Working on Issues, Ens. Ben Wilkinson

Prior to reporting to the ships counselor, which Ben considered a waste of time. Ben decided to get a quick workout and perhaps ease some of the nervousness he was currently feeling. He had donned his Bogu armor and taken his Shinai out of the carrying bag and was about to engage in a sparring match. “Computer, Kendo dojo, 20th century Earth, opponent third level.” The computer replied that all was ready and he could enter. Upon entering, he removed his sandals and began a series of stretches and warmup exercises, moving across the wooden floor, feet sliding in a specific pattern, shinai held high.low, to the side then to rear. The footwork was all important and Ben’s feet had hard calluses from hours of just practicing the specified patterns, The feet never left the floor but slid from position to position smoothly. After a few minutes he had worked up a slight sweat and felt loose and ready. He bowed to his opponent and said “Begin”.

The next few minutes were a frenetic whirl of activity with both Kendoists striking, parrying and scoring hits. This added to Ben’s frustration as his opponent should not have been scoring near as many blows as he was. Ben was fifth dan and should have easily beaten his opponent, he chalked it up to a lack of practice and concentration. As the match continued he became more frustrated and angry. “Computer cease sparring match! Exit program!” His opponent disappeared and the familiar pattern of the holodeck walls appeared. Ben pulled off his Men, or helmet and threw it across the room.

Sometime later, Ben exited the holodeck, and carrying his Men and sandals, padded toward the living quarters. He estimated he had just enough time for a quick shower and to change into his uniform before he was supposed to check in with the counselor. He was not looking forward to this. Counselors were always prying, always trying to tell you how you ought to feel, and how to deal with this emotion, or that feeling. It was really none of their business, he would work through this by himself. After all “himself” was all he had now.
