Well, that was at least something Thomas could do. Since Park was down in the Cargo Bay, anyway. He moved to relieve the NE at Tactical, and sent a communications request to Pallas.

“Calling now, sir,” he reported.

COS

The reply came almost immediately. “Federation starship, I thought you had gone back …”

=^=We had in interesting request from your ‘pirates’. =^= Marius paused hoping the Pallasian would reveal something.

A few moments later, the audio came on with Mr. Neve’s voice, =/\=Yes, Captain.=/\=

=^=Many of them claim to be hostages and others claim that they were manipulated into crimes by the possession of those hostages. Why wouldn’t your nation liberate prisoners of a terrorist group? We don’t much like kidnappers or non-combatants and children.=^=

David manned the main science station, keeping all sensors active, both internal and external. He wanted to be alerted the moment something out of the ordinary appeared.

He half-heartedly listened to the conversation the Captain was having. He would be glad when they would be gone from here and away from these people.

I believe that our juridical system is a fair one.=/\= There was a slight pause, as if Neve was considering how to put the next question. =/\=We have been looking for the pirates’ base, how did you chance on it so quickly?=/\=

=^=Indeed, as we speak we are doing the same. Including recording each and every identity. We certainly take our role in returning these individuals to the homeworld seriously and would need to check in on them periodically confirm that we did not remove them from the pot and put them in the fire.=^=

Marius also paused as he considered how to answer the question. =^=We’ve had a few more years of FTL travel and our sensors have advanced equally. I’m certain in a few years, your sensors could do the same.=^=

Dagen had had time for a brief update from Deeg. Out of the main comms where his voice wouldn’t be picked up, Dagen reported quietly, “Sir, the base was hidden fairly well and would have been beyond the Pallasian sensor tech as it now stands. They would have missed it in their fly by’s unless the pirates made themselves known in some way.” Likely the Captain would know that, though it wasn’t something that was usually said in a scan to put themselves boastfully over another’s tech unless it was necessary.

Dagen listened as well. When he was down on the planet he knew they were making every effort to impress. While they were a ‘different’ government style they weren’t perfect and well, frankly, no group was. Who were they, per se, to critique them this quickly? They had hundreds of years of developing to the now. They had scratched the surface of what made them tick. The mystery of the colonies was certainly there - and they couldn’t necessarily fault the homeworld for pirate activity. He frowned toward his console, unsure of whether that line of inquiry was valid. Dagen would have considered presenting it more as a discovery and helping where they found a need and in that way hold up the Federation as an entity they could better trust. This was, to Dagen, more confrontational. However, perhaps there was information that Dagen simply didn’t know about.

Thomas did frown. A quarantine he could perhaps understand, but detention and legal proceedings? Did they believe everyone on the moon to be a pirate?

Whilst they may have their freedom curbed, we will not deprive them of other things like food, water and a clean place to stay until the truth is established.=/\= said Neve.

However I would like to emphasize the justice system of a planet is one of the most significant factors considered in Federation membership. Worlds must demonstrate a fair and balanced legal system that places justice and proportional consequences with restorative practices as opposed to straight punishment modalities. I presume this is the justice system we are talking about?=^=

=/\=We believe that our justice system is balanced and fair. There is a balance between restorative and distributive justice. It is a balance we believe works in our society. I cannot assure you that all the people you will bring to us would reach the result that they desire, but I can assure you that we would treat everyone justly. I would invite your Federation to observe our proceedings to decide if we are not being just.=/\=

Dagen listened to the back and forth and backpedaling and assurances. Part of him felt they were starting to step on toes that were more aligned with actual diplomats. This was turning into a boasting match by the sound of it. “Are these refugees from the colony or the homeworld?” he mused quietly.
